That LG would make a wine refrigerator should come as no shock. This is, after all, the same company that made a smartphone-controlled oven. But, as a recently surfaced patent can attest, it appears the Korean electronics giant may have more than cooling soured grapes on its mind. The USPTO filing, which dates back to December of 2009, describes a “mobile terminal” (think: portable kiosk) outfitted with a camera that’s capable of scanning wine labels, matching them to a database and then delivering any relevant data.

The way food is cooked may be one key to understanding aging and disease.
Chemicals called advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) are garnering more attention from scientists intent on finding ways to reverse the diabetes epidemic. AGEs occur in low amounts naturally in the body, but they also come from food.
The most popular methods of cooking today — grilling, baking, and frying — release more AGEs, and AGEs lead to more inflammation, disease, and aging. According to studies, reduce the amount of AGEs in your food can improve insulin resistance in type 2 diabetics in just a few months.

White teeth are seen as attractive and a sign of good health. While this seems to be a valid conjecture, it just isn’t that simple. White teeth can be riddled with unseen cavities or weak with calcium loss. This is especially true for teeth that have been treated with conventional whiteners. Most such whiteners bleach teeth white with concentrated hydrogen peroxide, which is proven to severely damage teeth over time. It should come as no surprise however, as this method kills the microorganisms that resist plaque while weakening the structure of the teeth. Even some herbal treatments for whiter teeth can damage them in the long term, such as lemon juice and other acids that strip away the protective tooth enamel. The unexpected remedy: Turmeric.

Is popcorn a health food?
Not quite, but according to a new analysis, you shouldn’t be so quick to dismiss its nutritional benefits. Presenting research at the American Chemical Society meeting on Sunday, Joe Vinson, a professor of chemistry at University of Scranton, reported that popcorn may contain just as many healthful antioxidants — or even more, depending on how you measure them — as fruits and vegetables.

Warning: Don’t look at these photos without something delicious on hand to immediately consume. The pain will be too great.
Netherlands-born artist Tjalf Sparnaay has been creating jaw-dropping, mouth-watering photorealistic paintings since 1987. His meticulous renderings convey reality as convincingly as a photograph. The singed edges of a fried egg, the wilted lettuce in an over-dressed salad, the rogue crumbs of a ham sandwich… no detail goes ignored.

Along with exercise, your diet is the most important part of managing type 2 diabetes. If you have a sweet tooth, finding healthy desserts might seem like a challenge — but there are solutions.
“Most desserts are full of sugar and can rack up your carbohydrate allowance in one small serving,” says Lanah J. Brennan, RD, a nutrition expert and certified diabetes educator practicing in Lafayette, La. “The extra carbohydrates and fats that we consume when eating desserts can elevate your blood glucose and hinder your weight-loss attempts.”

Between listeria-tainted cantaloupes and salmonella in grape tomatoes, the produce aisle has become quite a scary place. How can we be sure that what we’re eating is actually safe? I usually give fruits and vegetables a brief rinse or a quick spin in the salad spinner but given all the recent food recalls, I’m starting to rethink this laid-back approach. Is regular old water really enough?
