Stephen Wiltshire spoke his first words, ‘pencil’ and ‘paper’ at five years old. At the age of eight, the late British Prime Minister Edward Heath commissioned Wiltshire to draw the Salisbury Cathedral.  At 11 years old Wiltshire drew a perfect, intensely detailed picture of the London cityscape after a single helicopter ride. Perhaps it is not surprising that Wiltshire was diagnosed with autism, when he was three years old.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk just announced self-driving cars by the end of next year. That’s huge.

In a conference call on Wednesday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced fully autonomous self-driving cars by the end of 2017.

Current Teslas (yes, including the Model 3) being produced in Fremont, California, would be equipped with the “hardware needed for full self-driving capability at a safety level substantially greater than that of a human driver,” Musk said.

The full announcement:

We are excited to announce that, as of today, all Tesla vehicles produced in our factory — including Model 3 — will have the hardware needed for full self-driving capability at a safety level substantially greater than that of a human driver. Eight surround cameras provide 360-degree visibility around the car at up to 250 meters of range. Twelve updated ultrasonic sensors complement this vision, allowing for detection of both hard and soft objects at nearly twice the distance of the prior system. A forward-facing radar with enhanced processing provides additional data about the world on a redundant wavelength, capable of seeing through heavy rain, fog, dust and even the car ahead.
To make sense of all of this data, a new onboard computer with more than 40 times the computing power of the previous generation runs the new Tesla-developed neural net for vision, sonar and radar processing software. Together, this system provides a view of the world that a driver alone cannot access, seeing in every direction simultaneously and on wavelengths that go far beyond the human senses.

.

Musk also frowned upon the media criticism of self-driving technology. “Writing an article that’s negative, you’re effectively dissuading people from using autonomous vehicles, you’re killing people,” he said.

Rhino Poachers In South Africa Set Terrible New Record

Poachers in South Africa reached a milestone in 2013 when they killed more than 1,000 rhinos for their horns.

The harrowing benchmark is a new record for poaching in the African nation. It represents more than a 50 percent increase from the year before, Reuters reports.

South Africa is home to the majority of the world’s rhino population, so mass killings of this volume is a dire warning for conservationists, the outlet notes. The black rhino is considered “critically endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), while the white rhino is classified as “near threatened.” Both subspecies live in South Africa.

10,000 Walrus Converge On Alaskan Beach As Arctic Sea Ice Declines

An estimated 10,000 walrus unable to find sea ice over shallow Arctic Ocean water have come ashore on Alaska’s northwest coast.

Scientists with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Friday photographed walrus packed onto a beach on a barrier island near Point Lay, an Inupiat Eskimo village 300 miles southwest of Barrow and 700 miles northwest of Anchorage.

The walrus have been coming to shore since mid-September. The large herd was spotted during NOAA’s annual arctic marine mammal aerial survey, an effort conducted with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, the agency that conducts offshore lease sales.

An estimated 2,000 to 4,000 walrus were photographed at the site Sept. 12. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the agency that manages walrus, immediately took steps to prevent a stampede among the animals packed shoulder to shoulder on the rocky coastline. The agency works with villages to keep people and airplanes a safe distance from herds.

Young animals are especially vulnerable to stampedes triggered by a polar bear, a human hunter or a low-flying airplane. The carcasses of more than 130 mostly young walruses were counted after a stampede in September 2009 at Alaska’s Icy Cape.

Transparent Snail, Zospeum tholussum, Discovered In Croatia (PHOTOS)

A new snail species with a beautifully translucent shell was recently discovered more than 3,000 feet (914 meters) underground in a Croatian cave.

A team of cavers and biologists with the Croatian Biospeleological Society discovered Zospeum tholussum in the Lukina Jama-Trojama cave systems of western Croatia — one of the 20 deepest cave systems in the world — on an expedition to determine the cave’s depth. The team collected all animal specimens found along the way, since deep cave crevices are often promising places to find new species, and happened upon one live sample of the new snail, along with eight empty shells.

The team presented the elegant snail to taxonomist Alexander Weigand at Goethe-University in Frankfurt, Germany, for help in identification. Weigand determined that this particular species had never before been found, but that it is related to other known species.

Drayson Racing electric car sets new world speed record

Drayson Racing Technologies has broken the world land speed record for a lightweight electric car.

Its Lola B12 69/EV vehicle hit a top speed of 204.2mph (328.6km/h) at a racetrack at RAF Elvington in Yorkshire.

Chief executive Lord Drayson, who was behind the wheel, said the achievement was designed to highlight electronic vehicle technology’s potential.

The previous 175mph record was set by Battery Box General Electric in 1974.

Drayson Racing is not the only electric vehicle-maker hoping to use motorsport to spur on adoption of the technology.

Last week Nissan unveiled the Zeod RC (Zero Emission On Demand Racing Car), which can switch between electric and petrol power.

The firm intends to enter the vehicle into next year’s Le Mans 24 race saying the competition would act as a “challenging test bed” for technologies that could eventually find their way into road cars.

In recent times, DEPRESSION has been the major cause of suicide. ANGER has led to premature death, LOW SELF ESTEEM has led to suicide because they do not see themselves as being able to carry on with life and feel others are better than they are. I have taken it upon myself to listen and write to the public and victims of these. If distance cannot make me listen and interact with you physically, then I hope my message would reach and touch your heart knowing that you are not in this alone and you can come out of it. Also, mastering the habits of a healthy lifestyle, peace of mind, better communication will have a great impact on your journey through life.
