Fats Domino, the legendary American pianist and singer-songwriter, died Tuesday. He was 89.
Domino’s family confirmed his death to WWL-TV news anchor Eric Paulsen, who shared the news on Wednesday morning. Domino’s daughter told Paulsen that her father died peacefully surrounded by his family and friends.
The Jefferson Parish coroner’s office in Louisiana confirmed Domino’s death to HuffPost Wednesday morning.
Domino, considered a pioneer of rock ‘n’ roll, was best known for his rendition of “Blueberry Hill” and for hits like “Ain’t That a Shame” and “I’m Walkin’.” Throughout his career, he sold more than 65 million records and had 37 Top 40 singles. In 1986, Domino was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987.

Early aerial images of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Maria here show waterlogged neighborhoods, roofs peeled off homes and shopping centers, and once-lush landscape denuded of leaves from a storm that officials say has left at least six people dead.
Three of the fatalities occurred in the municipality of Utuado as a result of mud slides, the U.S. territory’s public safety department said in a statement. Two others died in flooding in Toa Baja, and one other person died in Bayamón when a panel struck him in the head. More deaths are likely to be reported in the coming hours and days, officials said.
“We are aware of other reports of fatalities that have transpired by unofficial means but we cannot confirm them,” said the secretary of the department of public safety, Héctor M. Pesquera.

Just before President Trump strolled onto the rally stage on Tuesday evening, four speakers took turns carefully denouncing hate, calling for unity and ever so subtly assuring the audience that the president is not racist.
Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson proclaimed that “our lives are too short to let our differences divide us.” Alveda King, the niece of Martin Luther King Jr., led everyone in singing a few lines of “How Great Thou Art.” Evangelist Franklin Graham prayed for the politically and racially divided nation and asked the Lord to shut the mouths of “those in this country who want to divide, who want to preach hate.” And Vice President Pence declared that “President Trump believes with all his heart … that love for America requires love for all its people.” Meanwhile, a supporter seated directly behind stage even wore a T-shirt that stated: “Trump & Republicans are not racist.”
Then Trump took the stage.

The concept of eating a “plant-based” diet is tossed around frequently, but it’s a label that can be confusing. Some people shy away from the notion because they assume that plant-based is code for vegan. On the other hand, it’s easy to think that eating all plants and no animals guarantees that your diet is healthful and nutritious. But does it?
The research in support of plant-based diets is bountiful, which is likely because of what they include — vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and fiber — as much as what they don’t — excess saturated fat. But one limitation of much of that research is that it defines “plant-based” as vegetarian. Plant-based diets can take many forms, from vegan to vegetarian to flexitarian to omnivore. The common denominator is that they make plant foods the focal point of the plate. If you choose to eat animal foods like meat, poultry, fish, eggs or dairy, they play smaller, supporting roles.
The other limitation is that the research tends to treat all plant-based diets equally, without regard to food quality. The fact is that many people focus on avoiding certain foods but are blind to whether the rest of their diet is nutritionally adequate. This is one of the perils of demonizing specific foods — no one food makes or breaks a diet, and it’s your overall eating pattern that matters most for health and well-being.

A Norristown, Pennsylvania, judge declared a mistrial in a court case that accused entertainer Bill Cosby of sexually assaulting a former employee of his alma mater in his home in 2004.
Cosby, 79, could have been convicted of three felony counts of aggravated indecent assault that carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
Judge Steven O’Neill declared the mistrial Saturday morning after the jury of seven men and five women failed to reach a unanimous consensus on a verdict after 52 hours.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has made strides to become more diverse in recent years, but there’s a long road ahead to make up for the organization’s long legacy of exclusion.
Throughout its 90-year history, the Academy has not only failed to recognize the talent of many actors and actresses of color but awarded whitewashed roles in the industry.
Hollywood has consistently given diverse roles to white actors over the years; in fact, quite recently when Tilda Swinton was cast in 2016’s “Doctor Strange” as the Ancient One, a character who is Tibetan in the Marvel comics. And The Oscars haven’t helped alleviate this long-standing issue by rewarding this kind of whitewashing.
Several notable white actors have been nominated for an Oscar for portraying people of color through the years. Many of them have actually won.
Although many commercials during Super Bowl LI had a political bent, only one featured a full-blown Donald Trump parody making Russia jokes.
“Washington is so cold, I thought Russia was cold,” are the first lines to come out of the Donald Trump impersonator’s pursed mouth in Cyprus Air’s commercial advertising gas fireplaces.
From there, the impersonator makes various jokes about the sale being “huuuge” and the customers being winners.
The commercial ran in the Washington D.C. market. President Trump was not in D.C. Sunday, instead opting for his Mar-a-Lago home.

President-elect Donald Trump is staying on as an executive producer of NBC’s “The New Celebrity Apprentice” despite his impending responsibilities as leader of the free world, according to reports Thursday in The New York Times and Variety.
The popular program, which propelled the businessman to national prominence and paved the way for his eventual presidential win, is set to begin airing again in January with its new host, Arnold Schwarzenegger. The show went off the air during Trump’s presidential bid.
MGM, which produces the show for NBC, confirmed to Variety that Trump will still be one of the program’s executive producers, and that MGM, not NBC, will pay the president-elect’s fees. (MGM did not return a request for comment from The Huffington Post.)
