ROMAN J. ISRAEL, ESQ (2017) – My rating: 7.5/10

Roman J. Israel, Esq. is a legal drama written and directed by Dan Gilroy. The movie focuses on a lawyer who is forced to start working for a large law firm after his small-firm partner suffers a heart attack.  While the movie never reveals the true condition of the surviving lawyer, I suspect Asperger.  I’m not sure why this was not pursued because I think it’s extremely important to the film. Roman J. Israel, ESQ is a pretty dark  yet insightful story for which I have mixed feelings about.

A lawyer, Roman J. Israel (Denzel Washington) has always fought from behind the scenes at his small Los Angeles law firm, never taking credit for his work. Additionally, he has spent years on developing a brief that will change the justice system while making a personal decision to not to pursue a family or a normal life in order to…

Congress Is Getting Close To Shutting Down The Government

Lawmakers appeared a little closer Wednesday to passing yet another short-term spending bill to keep the government open, but as Senate Democrats looked increasingly likely to cave, conservatives in the House looked increasingly likely to fight ― or at least get some concessions. And depending on what demands GOP leaders give in to, those changes could still throw the Senate into chaos and the government into a shutdown.

House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) emerged from a meeting with Chief Deputy Whip Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) on Wednesday night saying House Republicans don’t yet have the votes to pass another short-term spending fix, called a continuing resolution (CR).

“At this point, if the vote were to happen today, there’s not the votes to fund it with Republican-only votes,” Meadows told reporters Wednesday night.

Still, Meadows said they were making “good progress,” and he expected leadership to have some accommodation for conservatives.

THE SHAPE OF WATER (2017) – My rating: 8.7/10

The Shape of Water is a dark romantic fantasy directed by Guillermo del Toro and co-written by del Toro and Vanessa Taylor. The film is set in Baltimore of 1962.  The movie has so many great messages that extends far beyond the obvious fantasy most of us will seek it out for.  It’s strong, profound and worthy of all the up coming nominations that have already started pouring in.  There’s no rose colored glasses nor any hidden secrets to be discovered.  There’s just pure love and of course, good vs evil and I loved it! WARNING: there’s a fair amount of sex or sexual suggestion making it somewhat risque for the younger crowd.

The plot follows a mute female custodian named Elisa Esposito (Sally Hawkins) who is employed at a highly-secured, secret government laboratory.  The facility receives a creature in a tank, which has been captured from a South American…

Congress honors a master Senate dealmaker amid a budget impasse

A couple days before Christmas 1995, then-Senate Majority Leader Robert J. Dole grew fed up with his negotiating partners in Newt Gingrich’s House of Representatives and the Clinton White House.

“It’s time for adult leadership,” the Kansas Republican declared during a Senate floor speech.

Using a favorite phrase of his tenure as one of Washington’s most prominent figures, Dole emerged as the leader in talks to reopen the federal government amid a budget standoff pitting the House speaker, Gingrich (R-Ga.), against President Bill Clinton.

That “adult leadership” made a rare appearance Wednesday in the Capitol. President Trump and the bipartisan leadership awarded Dole, 94, with the Congressional Gold Medal, and it served as a stark contrast to today’s partisan toxicity, the whiff of another shutdown in the air.

Hillary Clinton: Trump’s ‘ignorant, racist views’

Hillary Clinton on Friday called President Donald Trump’s reported remarks racist as she added her voice to the uproar after the president allegedly derided Haitians and referred to African nations as “shithole” countries in a discussion on immigration.

Civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga, went further: “I think the words and his actions tend to speak like one who knows something about being a racist. It must be in his DNA, in his makeup.”

He continued: “It’s frightening to have someone in the office of the president in 2018 speaking the way that he’s speaking. We’ve come too far, made too much progress to go back, to fan the flames of racism and bigotry.”

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said Friday that he heard Trump repeatedly refer to African countries as “shitholes” at a meeting they both attended the day before.

Trump said “things which were hate-filled, vile and racist,” Durbin told reporters.

“The most disheartening thing to me is my belief that that was the first time words that hateful had been spoken in the Oval Office of the White House,” Durbin added. “I think back at presidents throughout history and I cannot imagine a moment where a president sunk to that depth. That’s what breaks my heart.”

Azzedine Alaïa, Fashion’s Most Independent Designer, Is Dead at 82

Azzedine Alaïa, one of the greatest and most uncompromising designers of the 20th and 21st centuries, died on Saturday in Paris. He was 82.

His company said the cause was a heart attack.

Known as a sculptor of the female form, and worn by women from Michelle Obama to Lady Gaga, Mr. Alaïa was equally famous for his rejection of the fashion system and his belief that it had corrupted the creative power of what could be an art form.

He rarely hewed to the official show calendar, preferring to reveal his work when he deemed it ready, as opposed to when retailers or the press demanded it.

Instead he built his own system, and family of collaborators and supporters, and since the turn of the millennium had become an increasingly important voice for the value of striving to perfect and explore a single proprietary aesthetic, and against giving in to the relentless pressure to produce collections.
