If you don’t touch or pay attention to Samantha, she will eventually give up. Touch her on the hip, and she’ll tell you she’s always there for you. Touch her on the shoulder, and she’ll say “I’m yours.” Touch her mouth or her chest and she might switch from “romantic” to “sexy” mode.
Samantha is a sex robot that needs to be seduced. “There’s a certain amount of things that you need to do before she’s actually ready for sex, basically,” engineer Sergi Santos said about his creation. But the gamification of sexy hardware designed in a woman’s likeness is not romance — in fact, it downplays the idea of consent. After all, Samantha is programmed to say yes.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos sat four seats away from Donald Trump in December after accepting the president-elect’s invitation to a technology roundtable. Now, less than two months later, Bezos has publicly declared his support for a lawsuit filed against Trump and his administration. Life comes at you fast.
The lawsuit, filed Monday, says that Trump’s executive order banning the entry of visa holders from seven Muslim-majority countries to the United States will hurt both Washington state’s economy as well as its businesses. Microsoft and Expedia, also based in Washington, are supporting the lawsuit as well.
But these three aren’t the only tech companies now publicly opposing Trump’s immigration ban: Github, Google, Airbnb and Netflix are among a slew of other companies planning to meet on Tuesday to discuss filing an amicus brief in support of a lawsuit against the immigration executive order, CNBC reports. It’s unclear whether the amicus briefs will offer support for the aforementioned lawsuit or another suit filed on Monday by the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

The debate over electronic cigarettes rages on, despite the vaping industry’s best efforts to promote its value in decreasing the use of tobacco cigarettes. Proponents of e-cigs argue that the technology is safer than traditional cigarettes and can be used to quit smoking altogether. The scientific community is beginning to see things differently, however. Its consensus: vaping is a scam.
The myth of e-cigarettes as a safe alternative
“The evidence consistently shows that, while some people successfully quit smoking with e-cigarettes, most people using e-cigarettes have their chances of quitting conventional cigarettes reduced by about 30%,” Dr. Stanton Glantz, Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco’s Center of Tobacco Control Research and Education, told Mic. “The most dangerous thing about e-cigarettes is that they keep people smoking cigarettes.”
Dr. Glantz conceded the possibility of e-cigs as a way to transition from tobacco cigarettes, but argued that the bulk of e-cig users are what are referred to as “dual users” — consumers who smoke both e-cigs and traditional cigarettes.

Online shopping and banking is efficient and convenient, but it just takes one security breach for tons of personal information to get in the wrong hands. With every financial transaction, people share an array of private information, from emails, passwords and credit card numbers, to phone numbers and home addresses. This is what makes a potential data breach so terrifyingly invasive.
There’s a school of thought that online shopping and banking can be more secure if you have a dedicated browser exclusively for those transactions. Isolating financial proceedings may sound logical to the average person, but it is a partial solution at best, and far from being a panacea for all online security threats.

Women might make up nearly half of all gamers, but they still face routine harassment and abuse in an industry overwhelmingly led by men. They don’t need another reminder that the people creating their hardware barely register that they exist. But on Tuesday, women in gaming witnessed yet another boneheaded display of toxic masculinity, a poignant reflection of the tech industry’s gender and diversity issues: hardware company Razer apparently throwing shade at Apple by telling it to suck its dick.
That collective groan you hear is Twitter asking, “Are you fucking kidding me?”
The tweet in question reads, “You

Apple ships each iPhone with a bundle of preloaded apps. They can get the job done in a pinch, but most of them are not very good. This could not be more true for the iPhone’s Mail app, which, like most native Apple apps, mistakes simplicity for limitedness.
Email is a conduit for the activities in our lives — both personal and professional. The iPhone’s mail app doesn’t sync information and files from apps like Dropbox or Google Calendar. Having access to these platforms is vital for efficiently organizing responsibilities. To streamline that process, its best to turn to a third-party email client. But which one? The answer is clear.
Microsoft Outlook is the best iPhone email map by far. The Verge agrees with that sentiment, writing: “Outlook honestly feels like a next-generation email app, something that will force its competitors to do a lot of work to catch up. If you want full control over your inbox and the services that surround it, Outlook is your only choice.”

In a conference call on Wednesday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced fully autonomous self-driving cars by the end of 2017.
Current Teslas (yes, including the Model 3) being produced in Fremont, California, would be equipped with the “hardware needed for full self-driving capability at a safety level substantially greater than that of a human driver,” Musk said.
The full announcement:
We are excited to announce that, as of today, all Tesla vehicles produced in our factory — including Model 3 — will have the hardware needed for full self-driving capability at a safety level substantially greater than that of a human driver. Eight surround cameras provide 360-degree visibility around the car at up to 250 meters of range. Twelve updated ultrasonic sensors complement this vision, allowing for detection of both hard and soft objects at nearly twice the distance of the prior system. A forward-facing radar with enhanced processing provides additional data about the world on a redundant wavelength, capable of seeing through heavy rain, fog, dust and even the car ahead.
To make sense of all of this data, a new onboard computer with more than 40 times the computing power of the previous generation runs the new Tesla-developed neural net for vision, sonar and radar processing software. Together, this system provides a view of the world that a driver alone cannot access, seeing in every direction simultaneously and on wavelengths that go far beyond the human senses.
.
Musk also frowned upon the media criticism of self-driving technology. “Writing an article that’s negative, you’re effectively dissuading people from using autonomous vehicles, you’re killing people,” he said.

Schell, the founder of Digital Sisters and Stop Online Violence Against Women, knows firsthand the challenges women of color face when interviewing for jobs in the tech industry. That is, if they can land an interview at all.
“There’s a clear bias — some people have said this to my face — [that] it’s not possible there’s a woman, a black woman in particular, who could possibly do any of this technical work and do it well,” Mitchell said.
“From the gate,” interviewers don’t expect “expertise or knowledge coming from a person of color,” she added. “Despite the fact that I’ve seen mediocre bullcrap come out of white men.”
Tech giants like Facebook, G and Apple havet to diversity. But with each report they release, it’s evident that progress is marginal, if it exists at all.

Racial bias plagues the recruiting process.

Samsung is in the midst of another PR disaster: After multiple reports of exploding batteries caused the company to recall its flagship Galaxy Note 7 back in September, Samsung has halted production of the “replacement” phones, according to South Korean news agency Yonhap.
as many as five reports detailing replacement Galaxy Note 7s exploding or catching fire have surfaced — including one on a commercial airplane preparing to take off.
While Yonhap’s report said the Galaxy Note 7’s suspension is temporary, it’s probably time to consider a new smartphone option.
