Stephen Wiltshire spoke his first words, ‘pencil’ and ‘paper’ at five years old. At the age of eight, the late British Prime Minister Edward Heath commissioned Wiltshire to draw the Salisbury Cathedral. At 11 years old Wiltshire drew a perfect, intensely detailed picture of the London cityscape after a single helicopter ride. Perhaps it is not surprising that Wiltshire was diagnosed with autism, when he was three years old.

Women who get a flu vaccine while they’re pregnant lower their risk of having a child with autism.
.
Greg Poland, MD, a researcher at the Mayo Clinic has been studying the flu virus for a quarter century. He says you can think of the flu vaccine as an “anti-autism vaccine.”
It’s a startling statement, but it is backed up by several recent studies. Dr. Poland says pregnant women who get influenza have double or triple the risk of having a child with autism. So preventing flu during pregnancy is vital.

Researchers looking for simple ways to treat autism say they may have explained why at least some cases occur: It all has to do with the stress babies undergo at birth.
They’re already testing a simple drug for treating kids with autism and say their findings may point to ways to treat the disorder earlier in life.
It’s all experimental, but the study, published in the journal Science, should inspire other researchers to take a closer look. “This is exciting stuff to people in the field, because it’s getting at a basic mechanism,” says Andrew Zimmerman of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, who reviewed the study.
