A man convicted of imprisoning a 10-year-old girl for 17 days in a suburban New York dungeon was found dead in his cell, and she expressed sympathy for his family but not for him.
John Esposito was found unresponsive at a prison in Ossining, N.Y., on Wednesday, said spokeswoman Linda Foglia. The death is under investigation but does not appear to be suspicious, she said.
Esposito, 64, was serving 15 years to life for kidnapping Katie Beers and hiding her under his Bay Shore, Long Island, home in 1992.
Beers is now a married mother of two who earned a degree in business management and works in insurance sales near her home in rural Pennsylvania. She also has been making public appearances in recent months to speak about her ordeal.
She told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that state parole officials called her on Wednesday with the news of his passing. “They wanted me to hear it from them and not in the media, and that is something I definitely appreciated,” Beers said.

Maj. Nidal Hasan was sentenced to death for killing 13 people and injuring more than 30 in a 2009 attack at Fort Hood, Texas. In the almost four years since that event, 16 more mass shootings have occurred in the United States, with fatalities ranging from four to 28, according to data compiled by Mother Jones.
Each such event inevitably begets the question: What motivates killers? What can turn a person to such an act of violence? A 2009 TED talk by neuroscientist Jim Fallon may hold one of the keys to the enduring mystery of human violence.
Fallon explains that after examining the brains of around 70 psychopathic killers, certain common traits became evident — every single brain showed signs of damage. Fallon was even able to pinpoint a specific area where murderers had experienced trauma: the orbital cortex. Furthermore, he found that the age at which the damage occurred was also a sign of whether someone would become a killer or not.

killed him. “I basically was staring death in the face with this illness. It was not fun. It was very, very scary,” he said. A note scrawled by a prison guard minutes before her death was the clue that led to her killer, Orange County prosecutors said at the trial of her husband, who is charged with arranging the killing.
Elizabeth Begaren scribbled down the license plate number of a car that followed her onto an Anaheim freeway on-ramp in 1998, jurors were told Wednesday during opening statements in Superior Court.
Her husband, Nuzzio Begaren, was driving the family sport utility vehicle. He pulled over and a gang member got out of the other car and shot her, prosecutors contended.
Police found a torn-up piece of paper in the dirt by the side of the freeway and reassembled it. On it, Elizabeth Begaren had scribbled the words “light blue” and the plate number, prosecutor Larry Yellin said.
That led investigators to a Buick Regal driven by gang member Guillermo Espinoza, authorities said.

Almost everybody knows somebody that has developed dementia. The progressive loss of cognition and function can have devastating effects on the individual and their family and loved ones. Furthermore, patients with dementia can develop personality and behavior changes that can significantly strain the function and stability of their personal relationships.
Currently there are no known ways to prevent dementia. Our inability to prevent dementia is partially due to an incomplete understanding of what causes many of the most common forms of dementia, such as Alzheimers disease.
In the absence of clear treatment strategies to prevent dementia, a plausible next option is to try to treat or prevent risk factors known to cause it.

After deliberating for more than 16 hours, a jury of six women on Saturday evening found George Zimmerman not guilty in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old in Sanford, Fla.
Zimmerman had pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree murder with an affirmative defense, claiming he had shot Martin to save his own life after being attacked by the teen on Feb. 26, 2012. The trial, televised nationally on cable networks and streamed live across the Internet on various sites, kept the country captivated awaiting a verdict on the tragic events that took place that rainy night.

Ali Lambert Voron’s heart was telling her it was time for a baby. But would her body cooperate?
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (UC) in her mid-twenties, Ali didn’t realize the disease could be so devastating. Prescription medication, Asacol, initially lead to remission. “It was like, ‘I have colitis, and it doesn’t affect me,’ ” she remembered thinking.
Ali went about the business of living life. Dealing with a disease was nothing new to her — she also has alopecia, an autoimmune disease that caused her to lose her hair when she was 16 years old. “A huge part of my life has been that I don’t have hair and I don’t wear a wig,” she said. “Alopecia is totally a cosmetic thing. In no way has it hurt me or caused me a single bit of pain. But the second anyone sees me, every day of my life, they know ‘ooh, something is up with that girl.’ With colitis nobody would ever know I have it, but it has singed me to my core.”

In the world, human beings are facing various problems. People who are full of greed, anger, and ignorance are seen to be fighting with each other in words and deeds. The permanent president of the UN and the Security Council has rejected this, As a young Rohingya, I have come to realize that only by electing the president and secretary from among the countries in the world through a secret ballot system and governing the world fairly can we achieve global peace. The United Nations and the Security Council are organizations in which any country must govern, give orders, and make them obey their orders. For example, only when a defendant is tried in court can we hold the leaders of the countries in check and control them, can we achieve global peace smoothly. Otherwise, it will not be easy for powerful countries to use various excuses to end this war every year, every year, for the benefit of themselves and their countries. No country's leaders pay any attention to the words of the United Nations and the Security Council. If we look at it in practice, look at the Rohingya issue. Myanmar is a small country. Even that country has been under siege for 8 years. What action can be taken? Why is the UN and the Security Council Powerless? Without such Power, how can the organization bring about global peace? Everyone should think about it. Whether there is a veto or a strong one, all countries in the world can only achieve global peace if they are subject to the UN and the Security Council.
