After Google announced on Friday that it will start putting people’s names and faces into online ads, some Google+ users decided not to take the news lying down. The few who use still use Google’s Facebook clone protested the move by switching their Google+ profile pictures to images of the company’s executive chairman, Eric Schmidt.

The effect? Now, when strange personal endorsements show up across Google, it will be Schmidt’s face hawking a local bar or “Duck Dynasty,” not theirs.

Google’s new type of ads — in which restaurants ratings and long-forgotten YouTube comments can be repurposed with your name and Google+ profile picture — is similar to Facebook’s much-protected “Sponsored Stories.” There is a way to opt out of the program, but isn’t it more fun to dig up old pictures of Schmidt and go on a commenting spree?

Here Are The Sleaziest Things Congress Has Done During The Shutdown

We’re now almost two weeks into the government shutdown, and there’s been no shortage of outrage over the fact that Congress remains unable to figure out how to end it. Recent polling has shown record levels of support for replacing every member of Congress, and lawmakers are now less popular than witches and dog poop.

This level of unpopularity may not come as a surprise to anyone who’s followed the actions of Congress. The shutdown, brought on late last month by House Republicans who insisted that any measure to fund the government must also delay or dismantle Obamacare, has taken a nationwide toll on federal workers and programs. With around 800,000 federal employees furloughed without pay and programs for veterans, women and children increasingly becoming hobbled by the congressional impasse, lawmakers have been more successful at upsetting the people they serve than at ending the shutdown.

Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo claims she didn’t want to do the controversial footwear photo shoot at the Taj Mahal, a move that could allegedly land her and others in jail for two years if found guilty.

On Monday, the Hindustan Times reported officials from the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) would file a police complaint against Miss Universe for her Oct. 6 visit to the Taj Mahal because of a footwear photo shoot that took place on the grounds of the world wonder.

Apparently, Culpo modeled pairs of shoes at the marble ledge known as the Diana Seat, using the Taj Mahal as a backdrop, without permission from ASI.

“The sandals from a bag she carried were taken and placed on the Diana Seat for shooting pictures, which is not permitted by the ASI (Archaeological Survey of India),” Taj caretaker Munazzar Ali told India’s Mid-Day paper, according to the Hindustan Times. “It also amounts to disrespect and insult.”

As the government shutdown reaches its ninth day, Americans have been left with news of one meeting after another as it seems the budget deadlock will never end.

Although last week’s reports of no end in sight were dismal, this week a bipartisan meeting between House Speaker John Boehner and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi may shine a glimmer of hope towards a resolution.

This news is hopefully a step in the right direction after a series of failed attempts at negotiation between Boehner and President Obama. But who is being more unreasonable out of the two?

Cartoonist Kevin Eason thinks that title belongs to Boehner as the house speaker has repeatedly displayed resistance toward meeting any kind of agreement. And the American people agree. Although most of the country is unhappy with lawmakers in both parties, Republicans have borne the brunt of the blame for the government shutdown, according to a recent poll.

Private equity firm Cerberus is interested in taking a look at BlackBerry’s books as a prelude to a possible bid for the troubled smartphone company.

Cerberus is looking to sign a confidentiality agreement with BlackBerry that would allow it to access the company’s private information, an official familiar with the situation said Wednesday on condition of anonymity. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss the private talks.

Space-Time Curvature Simulated On Microchip For First Time Ever

It took two major expeditions charting the solar eclipse of 1919 to verify Albert Einstein’s weird prediction about gravity — that it distorts the path of light waves around stars and other astronomical bodies, distorting objects in the background. Now, researchers have created the first precise analogue of that effect on a microchip.

Any large mass distorts the geometry of space around it, for instance making parallel light rays diverge or converge. One consequence, described by Einstein’s general theory of relativity, is that objects behind a body such as the Sun may look magnified or distorted as the optical path of light goes through the region of warped space.

Metamaterials scientist Hui Liu of Nanjing University in China and his colleagues mimicked this ‘gravitational lensing’ — which affects light in the vacuum of space — by making light travel through solid materials instead. Different transparent media have different indexes of refraction, causing light to bend. One example is at the interface between water and air, a familiar effect that makes a pencil look broken when it is half-dipped in water. But if a medium has an index of refraction that varies gradually rather than abruptly, it will make the the paths of light rays curve as they travel through it.

The warping of the empty space around a massive star means that the shortest path of light around a star is a ‘curved’ one — but the bending of light rays in a medium can mimic the same effect. | Nature Photonics

10,000 Walrus Converge On Alaskan Beach As Arctic Sea Ice Declines

An estimated 10,000 walrus unable to find sea ice over shallow Arctic Ocean water have come ashore on Alaska’s northwest coast.

Scientists with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Friday photographed walrus packed onto a beach on a barrier island near Point Lay, an Inupiat Eskimo village 300 miles southwest of Barrow and 700 miles northwest of Anchorage.

The walrus have been coming to shore since mid-September. The large herd was spotted during NOAA’s annual arctic marine mammal aerial survey, an effort conducted with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, the agency that conducts offshore lease sales.

An estimated 2,000 to 4,000 walrus were photographed at the site Sept. 12. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the agency that manages walrus, immediately took steps to prevent a stampede among the animals packed shoulder to shoulder on the rocky coastline. The agency works with villages to keep people and airplanes a safe distance from herds.

Young animals are especially vulnerable to stampedes triggered by a polar bear, a human hunter or a low-flying airplane. The carcasses of more than 130 mostly young walruses were counted after a stampede in September 2009 at Alaska’s Icy Cape.
