Hours before dying in a fiery car crash, award-winning journalist Michael Hastings sent an email to his colleagues, warning that federal authorities were interviewing his friends and that he needed to go “off the rada[r]” for a bit.
The email was sent around 1 p.m. on Monday, June 17. At 4:20 a.m. the following morning, Hastings died when his Mercedes, traveling at high speeds, smashed into a tree and caught on fire. He was 33.
Hastings sent the email to staff at BuzzFeed, where he was employed, but also blind-copied a friend, Staff Sgt. Joseph Biggs, on the message. Biggs, who Hastings met in 2008 when he was embedded in his unit in Afghanistan, forwarded the email to KTLA, who posted it online on Saturday.

Joyce Brothers, the pop psychologist who pioneered the television advice show in the 1950s and enjoyed a long and prolific career as a syndicated columnist, author, and television and film personality, has died. She was 85.
Brothers died Monday of respiratory failure in New York City, according to her longtime Los Angeles-based publicist, Sanford Brokaw.
Brothers first gained fame on a game show and went on to publish 15 books and make cameo appearances on popular shows including “Happy Days” and “The Simpsons.” She visited Johnny Carson on “The Tonight Show” nearly 100 times.
The way Brothers liked to tell it, her multimedia career came about “because we were hungry.”

Jon Stewart laid into the BBC on Wednesday night, quipping that the British broadcaster’s sex abuse crisis made News Corp.’s phone hacking scandal “look almost quaint.”
Last week, the director-general of the BBC George Entwistle stepped down after the program “Newsnight” wrongly accused a politician of sexual abuse. The erroneous report came soon after news broke that same program axed an investigative story outing famed British broadcaster and former BBC host Jimmy Savile as a serial child sex offender. The program aired Christmas tributes to the broadcaster instead.

Businessweek continued its streak of attention-getting covers on Wednesday by portraying President Obama as a much older man for its next issue.
“The opposition remains considerable, and no matter how successful he is, the hardest job in the world will take its toll,” the editors wrote about the cover, which shows a wrinkled, white-haired Obama with the headline “The Next Four Years.”

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer spoke out about the racist attack on a network camerawoman at the Republican national convention on Wednesday.
On Tuesday night, two attendees threw nuts at a black CNN camerawoman and said, “this is how we feed the animals.” Multiple witnesses saw the incident, and police immediately removed the two attendees from the convention center. CNN confirmed that the incident happened via a statement released on Tuesday, but did not have further comment at the time.

Broadcasting legend Mike Wallace has died, CBS News announced on Sunday.
He was 93. Wallace died on Saturday night in a long-term care center in New Canaan, Connecticut. He was surrounded by family.
