A harrowing account of one group of Algerian hostages’ desperate flight for freedom credited an unusual gadget for helping to save their lives.
Liviu Floria, a Romanian gas worker, fled the scene of the hostage crisis at the Tiguentourine plant last week, following two days of hiding from the terrorists on the plant grounds, The New York Times reports.
Floria said he and seven others climbed a fence and escaped into the desert, navigating for miles across unfamiliar terrain using only a distant light and the compass application on Floria.

phone during an interview with the Associated Press, in Pitesti, Romania,
about his experiences during last week’s hostage taking at a natural gas
plant in Algeria. At least 81 people have been reported dead, including 32
Islamist militants, after a bloody, four-day hostage situation at Algeria’s
remote Ain Amenas natural gas plant. (AP Photo/Vadim Ghirda)

The world got its first inkling of the quick wit that would make Apple’s Siri an icon during a packed press conference held before an auditorium of tech elite.
“Who are you?” an Apple executive asked the assistant.
“I am a humble personal assistant,” Siri answered to appreciative laughter.
More like humbled personal assistant. That press conference was actually Siri’s second coming-out party. When the virtual assistant first launched in early 2010, it was a standalone iPhone app called Siri created by a 24-person startup with the same name, a company Apple would later acquire.

Her hips certainly do not lie.
Mikel Ruffinelli, 39, a 420-pound woman with an eight-foot circumference, set the new world record for World’s Largest Hips, according to the World Record Academy.
The mother of four, of Los Angeles, Calif., stands at just five-foot-four, has a proportionally small 40-inch waist, and is completely content with her shape, the Daily Mail reported.
“I see no reason to diet because I don’t have health problems,” Mikel said. “Men don’t fancy skinny girls, they like an hourglass figure.”

And then there’s this: Responsible person Charlie Sheen is adding another nickname to his list, but this one won’t get bleeped out. It’s Grandpa. Yes, the troubled star’s oldest daughter, Cassandra, is with child.Sheen’s ex, Denise Richards, was the one to announce the joy to the world via Twitter:
Cassandra, 28, is Sheen’s child with high school girlfriend Paula Profit, according to MercuryNews.com. The former (and future?) “Two and a Half Men” actor, 47, is currently dating a 24-year-old porn star, which could be fun for the kid in a bouncy-house sort of way.

History is always interesting.
1945 – Japanese surrender
| This film is believed to have never been seen before, only shots of the surrender were known. If you are a history buff you will enjoy this. General McArthur’s voice is a rarity in these old film clips
Japanese Surrender- Amazing Footage Sept 2, 1945.
This is a ‘must see’ for the WWII history buff or anyone interested in history.
Interesting the other signers to the document, from New Zealand/Australia to Europe/Russia.
This is an actual film made of the surrender ceremony of the Japanese to McArthur in Tokyo Bay in September 1945.
Actual voice of the General. Never been shown to the general public before.
We always saw the “stills” but never the film itself

Dutch television hosts Dennis Storm and Valerio Zeno have done some pretty wild things for their show “Guinea Pigs.” (In 2011, they ate each other’s flesh in front of a live audience.) But the duo’s latest escapade had them yelling and clutching their abdomens in agony when they opted to experience simulated labor contractions.
In a video clip from the show, Storm and Zeno reveal why they took on this particular challenge, explaining that giving birth is the worst pain there is. However, since men can’t feel labor pains, the two men used electro-stimulations to simulate contractions so they could experience the distress for themselves.

It’s not every day a young American photographer decides to pick up and leave for Iran given the thirty years of raging hostility between the U.S. and Iran – but then again, Brandon Stanton is not every photographer.
Many know Stanton from his Facebook page Humans Of New York (HONY), which in his own words provides “a photographic census of New York City.”

Researchers may have discovered a way to protect against the transmission of HIV–a worldwide epidemic that now infects about 35 million people.
Nobel Laureate Dr. David Baltimore and colleagues at his Caltech lab are injecting mice with a powerful prophylaxis called VIP. And guess what? It works. Caltech postdoctoral fellow Alex Balazs is heading up this groundbreaking research. So is it now time to test this approach in humans?
