Brain cells can live at least twice as long as the organisms in which they reside, according to new research.
The study, published today (Feb. 25) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that mouse neurons, or brain cells, implanted into rats can survive with the rats into old age, twice as long as the life span of the original mice.
The findings are good news for life extension enthusiasts.
“We are slowly but continuously prolonging the life of humans,” said study co-author Dr. Lorenzo Magrassi, a neurosurgeon at the University of Pavia in Italy.

“Directed evolution” may save our polluted planet. At least, chemical engineer Dr. Frances Arnold sees it that way.
The recent National Medal of Technology and Innovation recipient is credited with pioneering the technique of directed evolution, a method used to engineer proteins or evolve certain organisms, leading to the revolutionary production of renewable fuels and chemicals, among other results.

Carmen Blandin Tarleton is starting over.
The Vermont former transplant nurse has undergone more than 50 surgeries — including a full face transplant — since her jealous ex-husband poured lye on her in 2007, burning and disfiguring more than 80 percent of her body.
She’s currently recovering from a transplant that applied an anonymous female donor’s facial skin to the 44-year-old’s nose and lips, facial muscles, neck, arteries and nerves. Doctors tell the Associated Press that Tarleton is “a fighter” and quoted her as saying she feels “strong, and . . . confident that I have the strength to deal with whatever comes my way.”

Prosecutors on Thursday charged a Minnesota man with murdering his missing wife, after investigators found blood traces throughout the couple’s home and evidence of an extensive effort to cover it up.
Authorities said they have not found 30-year-old Kira Trevino’s body, but they believe she’s dead because of the amount of blood found in her car and in the couple’s St. Paul home and because it wasn’t like her to disappear without telling anyone.
Jeffery Dale Trevino, 39, was arrested Tuesday and made an initial court appearance Thursday. He is charged with two counts of second-degree murder in his wife’s death, which investigators believe happened last Thursday or Friday. Bail was set at $1 million.

Las Vegas police have located and interviewed a woman they identified as a person of interest in the Las Vegas strip attack that killed rapper Kenny Clutch in his Maserati and two other people in a taxi.
Police were searching for Tineesha Lashun Howard, 22, in addition to prime suspect and fugitive Ammar Harris, 26, who is the subject of a nationwide manhunt.
Howard’s criminal record includes arrests for soliciting prostitution, trespass, possession of a stolen vehicle and grand larceny trick roll, which is when a prostitute steals money or other property from a customer.

Turns out that 2013 is, indeed, a Leap Year.
Leap Motion, the company that makes the hotly anticipated gesture-control device of the same name, announced Wednesday morning that the first Leap Motion units would ship to pre-orderers around the world on May 13, and that everyone could get their hands (and fingers) on one on May 19.
If you want one, you can order on Leap Motion’s website here or, somewhat curiously, on BestBuy.com right here. The Leap Motion Controller costs $80 at either outlet.
For a refresher, the Leap Motion controller plugs into almost any newer laptop and allows you to manipulate the screen via a series of hand and finger movements in the air. It’s sort of like having a touchscreen computer, but without actually touching the screen.
.

The Leap Motion Controller, which allows gesture control of both Mac and Windows laptops, will be released in May for $80. (Leap Motion)

Looking at photos from the November spill, so eerily similar to the photos from BP’s April 2010 spill in the Gulf of Mexico, it’s clear we are still looking for energy in risky places, and largely unprepared to deal with the consequences of failure. One year after the BP spill (which workers soaked up, in large part, with straw bales), the X Prize Foundation announced winners of a million-dollar incentive to develop new tools to clean up oil spills: And many others are looking at this problem too, including one of TED’s Senior Fellows, Cesar Harada. Harada is an inventor — of a staggering number of kinds of things. One of them is the Open_Sailing project, a group of inventors and scientists building open-source hardware and software to explore and study the ocean.

Reusing everyday items can lead to a good deal of savings over time. Here, our experts discuss ways to repurpose common objects that are both useful in the kitchen and budget-friendly.
For instance, when you buy a bunch of oranges, think twice before tossing those mesh produce bags. With three of them you can make a handy and effective scrub sponge for free. First, cut off the tags and labels. Then, take a bag and tie a knot on one end. Next, stuff it with two more bags, and then knot the other end. You’ll have a great scrubber in seconds.

A Mediterranean diet enhanced with extra-virgin olive oil or extra servings of nuts lowered the risk of heart attacks and other cardiovascular events in people, study finds.
All roads lead to Rome when eating for heart health, a major study has found — or at least they point to the advantages of the Mediterranean diet for those at high risk for heart disease.
Researchers in Spain found that the Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil or nuts reduced incident of major cardiovascular events, according to a study published online today in the New England Journal of Medicine.
