Did you ever receive a text message from your wife or your boss and wish that it could be read to you in an unsettling British accent by a giant disembodied woman’s head against a stark black background?
Well, friend, that crazy dream of yours might just be closer to reality than you think. Researchers at the University of Cambridge have unveiled their latest progress on Zoe, a “digital talking head which can express human emotions on demand” with “unprecedented realism.” Gizmag pointed out the disembodied head to us.
.
Zoe is a project from Cambridge University, a floating head that can read sentences with matching emotion on her face. One day, the researchers hope that anyone will be able to scan his or her own face into the software. (YouTube: CambridgeUniversity)

Turns out that 2013 is, indeed, a Leap Year.
Leap Motion, the company that makes the hotly anticipated gesture-control device of the same name, announced Wednesday morning that the first Leap Motion units would ship to pre-orderers around the world on May 13, and that everyone could get their hands (and fingers) on one on May 19.
If you want one, you can order on Leap Motion’s website here or, somewhat curiously, on BestBuy.com right here. The Leap Motion Controller costs $80 at either outlet.
For a refresher, the Leap Motion controller plugs into almost any newer laptop and allows you to manipulate the screen via a series of hand and finger movements in the air. It’s sort of like having a touchscreen computer, but without actually touching the screen.

The Leap Motion Controller, which allows gesture control of both Mac and Windows laptops, will be released in May for $80. (Leap Motion)

You want to turn off the light in your bedroom, but you are so comfy and cozy under your blanket. Your plants are always dying because you have no idea how much water to give them. You’d like to watch “Real Housewives of Atlanta,” but your stupid boyfriend wants to watch “Real Housewives of Miami,” instead.
Modern life is full of problems. Luckily, technology companies have devoted brilliant men and women to solving those problems and making these troubles nothing but quaint trifles of ancient life.

If you’re planning a big party in the near future — a wedding reception, perhaps, or a Bar Mitzvah, or an inauguration gala — you’re probably spending a lot of money on staff to make sure everything runs smoothly. Between catering, waiters, and decoration, you’ve got a lot of dough riding on a lot of different people.
