A Cheaper Alternative to Tissues

When you have a cold or are suffering from allergies, tissues are a must-have, but the cost can rack up when you’re buying them all the time. Have you ever considered using toilet paper instead? Here are a few good reasons why you should.
.
We’ve all grabbed a few squares from the bathroom roll in a pinch, but using toilet paper over tissues is actually a more cost-effective choice in the long run. On average, a box of tissues has 65 sheets and breaks down to about 2 cents per sheet. However, a roll of toilet paper has nearly four times as many sheets as a box of tissues and costs half as much.

7 Foods a Nutritionist Would Never Eat

And why you shouldn’t either!

They may have been touted as the ultimate diet food during the low-fat/no-fat craze of the late 1980s and 1990s, but don’t be fooled. Rice cakes can have a glycemic index rating as high as 91 (pure glucose has a rating of 100), making it the kind of carbohydrate that will send your blood sugar on a roller coaster ride. This is bad for weight loss and for your health.

From a Minneapolis institution whose claim to fame is called the “Silver Butter Knife Steak,” to a 64-year-old San Francisco landmark that serves nothing but prime rib, America has no shortage of legendary steakhouses. Chef Mario Batali has a steakhouse in Vegas where he’s aging steaks for over a year; a New Orleans power broker hangout tops their filet with fried oysters and béarnaise sauce; one Tampa legend offers seven different cuts in a total of 51 sizes, not to mention a 7,000-bottle wine list. We’ve searched far and wide for the finest steakhouses the country has to offer, and have found 20 that are must-visits for even the most casual carnivore (Credit: St. Elmo Steakhouse).

Jared Fogle lost more than 200 pounds eating Subway sandwiches 15 years ago. Sharing his story paid off. Today, the spokesman has an estimated net worth of $15 million, according to New York’s Daily News.

Fogle weighed in at 425 pounds when he bit into his first Subway sandwich as a student at Indiana University.

He said that his weight and appearance fueled habits that contributed to his obesity and that he shied away from dates and parties that other college students enjoyed.

The business major envisioned himself working at an ad agency or public relations firm but never realized his personal weight-loss journey would double as his career. Since he started losing weight, Subway has been his only employer.

“Stamford is going to just flood artists”

The streets of downtown Stamford will transform into one large art exhibit this weekend for the City’s first ever Artwalk. The free event, created by the Stamford Downtown Special Services District, will showcase more than 90 artists in shops, restaurants, and galleries downtown.

Stamford DSSD President Sandy Goldstein says, “We want to make sure that people recognize the downtown as an art venue.”

Patrons can visit over 35 venues on the Artwalk route, where they will run into live music, performances, and special activities a long the way.

Artwalk curator Valerie Cooper says, “It’s just a wonderful conglomerate of diversity, culture, of different nationalities, and my vision was to put something together that reflected exactly what Stamford sort of stands for.”

The Old Town Hall Museum and UConn’s campus art gallery are just two of six participating galleries that will feature special exhibits for the event.

Kathryn Schulz On Regret (Premiere)

Early one morning a couple of months ago, as I was rushing around trying to get my act together in time to catch a train to New York, I filled a thermos with coffee, reached into the fridge, grabbed an unopened half-gallon of milk — one of those fancy, bottled-in-glass-like-the-good-old-days kinds — and promptly dropped the entire thing on the kitchen floor.

Here’s what happened next. The glass shattered upward and outward, in spectacular, slow-motion-film-worthy fashion; I later found shards in the cat’s dish, the salad bowl, and the blender, two shelves up. The half-gallon of milk set about demonstrating some principle of physics involving volume and surface area, or maybe some principle of religion involving loaves and fishes. Either way, in under three seconds, vast, improbable quantities of it were everywhere: soaking one leg of my jeans, running in lewd streams down the oven, flowing through a gap under a closed door and into the next room. As I stood there missing my train, I had a flash of insight. The reason we are instructed not to cry over spilled milk is that, if you spill enough of it, crying (or its adult analog: cursing) is the only natural response.

What 2,000 Calories, A Woman’s Recommended Daily Amount, Looks Like (VIDEO, PICTURES)

It’s recommended that a woman consume on average 2,000 calories per day. But, if you’re not an avid calorie-counter with a pair of food scales in your handbag, it can be quite difficult to know the calorie content of everything that passes your lips.

But don’t fear, help is here. Buzzfeed have produced a helpful video showing what a 2,000-calorie serving actually looks like. And needless to say, it is taking the internet by storm.

Whether it’s 26 eggs, 50 bacon rashers or one whole pizza, this list is guaranteed to surprise (and disgust).

Red meat: What makes it unhealthy?

On Monday, researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health released study results showing that red meat consumption was associated with a higher risk of early death. The more red meat — beef, pork or lamb, for the purposes of the research — study participants reported they ate, the more likely they were to die during the period of time that data collection took place (more than 20 years).  So what is it in red meat that might make it unhealthy?

Sourdough starter is a wonderful thing – I’ve not yet used mine to make bread, but already my nose and mouth have developed an appreciation for all it can convey. Take these pancakes, for instance; never before has a pancake been so flavourful, complex or versatile. Indeed, what you see before you are equally suited to both sweet and savoury toppings – there need be no limit to your imagination here.
