Where in the brain, exactly, is intelligence? Is a high I.Q. just a result of a flawed test – or do high-I.Q. brains have specific, measurable differences from others? Answers await, Intrepid Reader – but first we have to make sure we’re asking the right questions.
Let’s start with the big news: a study just published in the Journal of Neuroscience reports that when a certain area of the frontal lobe has unusually wide and active connectivity, a higher I.Q. tends to follow. The trouble is, though, that a high I.Q. only reflects certain types of mental abilities – so what this discovery really means is that a certain functional network in the brain plays a major role in certain kinds of smart thinking.

Follow these tips and keep children safe on the road.
Did you know 3 out of every 4 car seats are used incorrectly? According to safercar.gov, parents haven’t been doing enough to keep their kids safe on the road, which has resulted in vehicle crashes becoming one of the leading causes of death for children between 1 and 13 years old. In order to combat these sobering statistics, NHTSA provides an informative booklet aimed at getting parents prepared for life on the road with their children. Available online in PDF form here, the information equips parents with useful knowledge such as what features you should look for in buying a car, which types of car seats you should use and how to properly do so and child safety scores for nearly every vehicle available today.

On Monday, researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health released study results showing that red meat consumption was associated with a higher risk of early death. The more red meat — beef, pork or lamb, for the purposes of the research — study participants reported they ate, the more likely they were to die during the period of time that data collection took place (more than 20 years). So what is it in red meat that might make it unhealthy?

The leading authority on post-polio syndrome, Dr. Jacquelin Perry was a 1959 Times Woman of the Year.
The country was in the grip of a polio epidemic in the 1950s when orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jacquelin Perry began performing spinal surgeries in Downey that helped paralyzed survivors of the disease regain mobility.
When some of the same patients returned to her 40 years later seeking help for pain and muscle weakness wrought by the aftereffects of polio, Perry remained true to form.

It’s been said that nothing in this world is certain, except death and taxes. But what if you could freeze your body immediately after death and be revived in the distant future, when medical science has found a cure for your injuries or illness? You’d be able to cheat death (and perhaps your taxes)! Indeed, this is what advocates of the cryonics movement believe–so much so that they are willing to wager a lot of money and their own bodies.
Kim Suozzi was one of those people. She passed away this year, at the tender age of 23, of brain cancer. She chose to have her body frozen in the hopes that one day, she may come back to life.

The young man tucks his violin under his chin and begins to play. A hush falls over the few spectators in the largely empty opera house, who turn toward the bare stage. As his lilting notes float through the room, other people trickle in from the lobby to listen.
The young man sometimes closes his eyes as he plays, as if lost in the music. If his audience closed their eyes, too, they would never know the violinist standing before them has no right hand, only a stunted appendage with tiny stubs instead of fingers.
Which is fitting, because Adrian Anantawan prefers to be judged for what people hear, not what they see.

Phase II trial demonstrated modest benefit in reducing cognitive decline in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.
An investigational oral drug targeting adrenergic receptors improved scores on memory tests in patients with Alzheimer’s disease in a phase IIa trial, researchers said.
When given with currently approved Alzheimer’s disease drugs, the agent — called ORM-12741 — improved composite memory test scores by 4 percent after 3 months of twice daily treatment, whereas scores worsened by 33 percent in patients receiving memantine and a placebo pill, according to Juha Rouru, MD, of Orion Pharma in Turku, Finland, and colleagues.

Caves that can banish pain? Now that really is holeistic! Inside the Austrian mountain that offer an amazing cure
- Radon treatment said to help cure a number of medical conditions
- The cave is said to treat joint pain, chronic bronchitis and skin conditions
I’m in my swimsuit sitting on what looks like a theme park ride, about to travel a mile into a mountain in Austria. It is 100F (38C) and sweat drips from every pore. I’m trying an amazing treatment.
At the Gastein healing caves, in Radhausberg mountain, a controversial form of therapy with radioactive radon gas is used to treat a long list of medical conditions, including arthritis and other joint pain, chronic bronchitis and skin conditions such as my psoriasis.

Rapid treatment after HIV infection may be enough to “functionally cure” about a 10th of those diagnosed early, say researchers in France.
They have been analysing 14 people who stopped therapy, but have since shown no signs of the virus resurging.
It follows reports of a baby girl being effectively cured after very early treatment in the US.
However, most people infected with HIV do not find out until the virus has fully infiltrated the body.
