Every week, The WorldPost asks an expert to shed light on a topic that’s making headlines around the world. Today, we speak with investigative journalist Anabel Hernández.
As one of Mexico’s leading investigative journalists, Anabel Hernández has dedicated the past decade to investigating her country’s drug war — one of the most dangerous projects a reporter could ask for. Her 2010 book Los señores del narco, translated into English as Narcoland, detailed the extensive government corruption that allowed Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán and his Sinaloa cartel to become one of the most powerful criminal enterprises in the world.
Working in partnership with journalist Steve Fisher at The Investigative Reporting Program (IRP) at U.C. Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism , Hernández has also been at the forefront of one of the leading investigative reports into the case of the missing 43 students from the Ayotzinapa teachers college who were attacked by Mexican police in September.

More women than ever are dying from painkiller overdoses. How can you spot signs of drug abuse in a loved one?
.
Americans’ abuse of prescription painkillers has reached epidemic proportions, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC estimates that 15,000 people die every year in this country from overdoses involving opioid or narcotic pain relievers.
While men are more likely to die from painkiller abuse, the number of deaths among women was up 400 percent between 1999 and 2010. “More women are dying at rates that we have never seen before,” said CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden. “Stopping this epidemic in women — and men — is everyone’s business.”

Have you ever wondered what ketamine, speed and Prozac really look like? You may or may not be familiar with the sensory experience of the various legal and illegal substances, but we’re pretty sure you’ve never sat down with a microscope and pored over the celestial images that are hiding inside within.
.
Enter German artist Sarah Schönfeld, who’s performed a similar experiment in her project “All You Can Feel.” Whether depicting methamphetamine, heroin or ecstasy, her images present an astonishing side of pseudo-alchemy, the result of sprinkling psychotropics and neurotransmitters onto photographic negatives and subjecting the swatches to the typical photographic process. What remains are tumbling landscapes, planetary scenes and crystallized universes, dancing about in a manner eerily similar to the feelings you might associate with each respective substance.

The Laboratory contains the formula for staying out of jail, in school and on the right path. Utilizing real examples, personal experiences and anecdotes, retired warden Howard Robertson de-glorifies jail and talks frankly about the negative aspects of being incarcerated. The readers are educated on the perils of gangs, drugs, bullying, dropping out of school, associating with the wrong crowd, making excuses and failing to set high goals for themselves. The major source of the information contained in the book came from adolescent and adult inmates who were incarcerated on Riker’s Island during the course of Warden Robertson’s illustrious career. The other source came from the hard knock experiences that Warden Robertson learned from as a young man growing up in a drug infested neighborhood in Jamaica Queens, New York. This authenticity gives this book (THE LABORATORY) real value.

Where in the brain, exactly, is intelligence? Is a high I.Q. just a result of a flawed test – or do high-I.Q. brains have specific, measurable differences from others? Answers await, Intrepid Reader – but first we have to make sure we’re asking the right questions.
Let’s start with the big news: a study just published in the Journal of Neuroscience reports that when a certain area of the frontal lobe has unusually wide and active connectivity, a higher I.Q. tends to follow. The trouble is, though, that a high I.Q. only reflects certain types of mental abilities – so what this discovery really means is that a certain functional network in the brain plays a major role in certain kinds of smart thinking.

We’ve all heard stories of unlucky schmucks forced to swallow condoms of cocaine and cross the border, but that’s actually tame compared to some of the more out-there ideas that drug cartels have hatched. In this feature, we’ll unearth ten completely insane ways that criminals have moved drugs from place to place. These are, by far, the craziest drug smuggling schemes ever.
.

Drug Cannon
Drug cartels are known for being well armed, but this is ridiculous. Police in Mexicali confiscated a bizarre homemade mechanism consisting of a metal tank, a length of PVC pipe and an old car engine that was used to launch packages of weed over the Mexican border. The “marijuana cannon,” as they dubbed it, used pneumatic pressure to vault 30-pound cans of drugs as far as 500 feet to be picked up by runners on the other side.
