History was made in the ballet world this week when soloist Misty Copeland was promoted to principal dancer, thereby becoming the first black female principal in the 75-year history of the American Ballet Theatre.

Copeland, now 32 years old, has been dancing with the American Ballet Theatre for over 14 years, nearly eight as a soloist. Most recently, she starred as Odette/Odile in “Swan Lake” at the Met, a role dance critic Alastair Macaulay called “the most epic role in world ballet.”

Copeland’s name is known far beyond the traditional confines of the ballet world, in part due to her emphatic openness regarding the problematic relationship between race and ballet. As Elizabeth Blair explained on NPR: “It’s hard for any ballet dancer to succeed, regardless of race, but a black dancer is up against a centuries-old aesthetic — the idea, for example, that the swan must be feather-weight and snow white, and so does her prince.”

Applying makeup is no easy feat. There’s all that accenting and accentuating, not to mention the contouring involved. Learning to properly administer cosmetics is an art form in itself that can result in captivating visages. But after gazing upon artist Elly Heise’s work, we can’t help but fall in love with the dilettante look.

For 50 Years, This Free Love Pioneer Has Painted The Beauty Of Female Sexuality

For over 50 years, Dorothy Iannone has been bringing the ethos of free love to the world of painting. Transforming her wild brand of “ecstatic unity” into vibrant color palettes and unabashed nude forms, her artworks illustrate the beauty and mystical sublime of sex, sex and more sex.

At 80 years old, Iannone is still a poster woman for the depths and possibilities of erotic art. While her naked, fornicating figures fell under the swift guillotine of 1960s censorship, today the octogenarian is running off of several straight years of gallery attention. Solo exhibition after retrospective, the art world seems eager to cozy up to the self-taught artist and her canvases teeming with female sexuality and spiritual love. No longer deemed “pornographic,” Iannone’s hailed as a “high priestess, matriarch, sex goddess.”

A Photographic Exploration Of The Oldest Living Things In The World

For nearly a decade, photographer Rachel Sussman has been traveling the globe in search of the world’s oldest living things. From the Mojave Desert to the Australian Outback to Greenland’s icy expanses, she captures portraits of life forms so relentless they’ve managed to survive eons of planetary change. An 80,000-year-old colony of aspen trees in Utah and a 43,600-year-old self-propagating shrub in Tasmania rank amongst Sussman’s unlikely subjects, just two of the many plants, fungi and invertebrates catalogued by her lens.

Astonishing Photographs Of Drugs Prove Substances Look Just Like They Feel

Have you ever wondered what ketamine, speed and Prozac really look like? You may or may not be familiar with the sensory experience of the various legal and illegal substances, but we’re pretty sure you’ve never sat down with a microscope and pored over the celestial images that are hiding inside within.
.
Enter German artist Sarah Schönfeld, who’s performed a similar experiment in her project “All You Can Feel.” Whether depicting methamphetamine, heroin or ecstasy, her images present an astonishing side of pseudo-alchemy, the result of sprinkling psychotropics and neurotransmitters onto photographic negatives and subjecting the swatches to the typical photographic process. What remains are tumbling landscapes, planetary scenes and crystallized universes, dancing about in a manner eerily similar to the feelings you might associate with each respective substance.

Inside The Plan To Transform New Orleans Into A Giant Musical Playground

A “sonic playground,” a “shantytown-sound laboratory,” a “small village of ramshackle sculptures.” These are just some of the phrases that have been used to describe the ongoing musical architecture project entitled “Dithyrambalina.”

Dithyrambalina began two years ago when 25 collaborating artist, including street artist Swoon, transformed a 150-year-old New Orleans house into an architectural instrument and a vehicle of hope for the Hurricane devastated locale. The enchanted performance venue, dubbed “The Music Box,” was a collection of wooden and metal structures built from a Creole cottage, each structure housing off-kilter instruments.

White Women With Black Hairstyles Redefine Corporate America

Almost every woman has toiled before the mirror, trying desperately to look “professional.” Photographer Endia Beal explored this frustration that occurs so often in the corporate sphere, this feeling of otherness that asks women, quite simply, to change. For minority women this change is often far more difficult, as the ideal corporate appearance remains, in most cases, the white male.
