On Tuesday morning, a brain surgeon in Birmingham, Ala., walked six miles through a severe snow storm to save a patient’s life.
Dr. Zenko Hrynkiw, Trinity Medical Center’s only neurosurgeon, had just finished surgery at a neighboring hospital when Steve Davis, the charge nurse at Trinity’s neuro intensive care unit, called him with an emergency, AL.com reported. Hrynkiw attempted to drive to the hospital, but roadblocks prevented him from getting far.
Davis told The Huffington Post that both local authorities and Trinity tried to provide transportation for Hrynkiw, but to no avail.
“I called him again and he said, ‘I’m not getting anywhere, I’m walking,'” Davis told HuffPost.
Breaking a world record is a huge accomplishment for any athlete, but 16-year-old Kayla Wheeler has managed to do it with no legs and only one arm.
The high school student from Washington was born with three congenital amputations, according to KCPQ. She took to swimming at a young age as a form of physical therapy. Today, she’s a Paralympic swimming champion — and currently holds the world record in the 50 meter butterfly.
“It’s kind of indescribable,” her mother, Joyce Wheeler, told KCPQ. “When they announce her name and she’s representing the United States I get goose bumps all over. I’m so amazed that’s my child.”
Thanks to the residents of a Texas city and a Facebook campaign that has gone viral, an abused dog who was was left for dead in a garbage bag has been given a new chance at life.
The pooch, who has since been named “Buck,” was reportedly found on Jan. 5, after a local resident of Conroe, Tex., noticed that a garbage bag left on the side of the road and “tied to a t-post of a fence” was moving. He tore the bag open and was shocked to find the 3-year-old mixed breed, covered in blood and weakened by the cold, inside.
The Pessah family has something particularly special to be thankful for this year. Their son, 21-year-old Benjamin Pessah from Burlingame, Calif., awoke from a month-long coma just in time to eat a Thanksgiving meal with his family after being shot in the head last month.
According to the New York Daily News, Pessah was walking home with his girlfriend and two other friends from a Halloween party in San Francisco on October 28 when a man — Hun Saelee — allegedly approached the group and touched Pessah’s girlfriend inappropriately.

An Indianapolis family says their pet dog fended off would-be kidnappers who tried to steal their baby.
On Tuesday morning, a man and a woman tried to enter Nayeli Garzon-Jimenez’s home while she was talking to her husband on the phone, according to WISH TV.
When she told him what was happening, Adolfo Angeles-Morales told his wife to check the door and identify the intruders.

You could say Bessie Sedor’s reunion with her daughter after 67 years is the icing on the cake. Every year, Sedor would bake a cake on Aug. 3 to secretly honor the birthday of the child she placed for adoption in 1945. A Georgia woman’s heartwarming act is making headlines this week, poignantly proving the power of kindness, even between two strangers.
Branden Whitehead, a 20-year-old college student, was walking home from school last month when he was struck and critically injured in a hit and run accident, MyFoxAtlanta.com reported. The West Georgia Technical College student walks 15 miles to and from school, carrying a heavy bag of books–the trek takes four and a half hours.
