Trayvon Martin’s family has reached a settlement in a wrongful death suit they filed against the homeowners association of the sub-division where Martin was killed, the Orlando Sentinel reports.
Martin was shot to death just steps from his father’s home on Feb. 26, 2012, by volunteer neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman. The case drew national attention last year as the Sanford Police Department vacillated on whether to file charges against Zimmerman, who indicated that he’d shot Martin only after being attacked. Zimmerman has been charged with second degree murder and is currently awaiting trial.

In the year since it landed on the international news radar, the Trayvon Martin case has raised a global discussion about Florida’s controversial “Stand Your Ground” law. But in a stunning twist of events Tuesday morning, George Zimmerman’s attorneys waived their client’s right to a scheduled April 22 hearing that was to be held under the law that has sparked so much debate, ABC news reports.
Zimmerman, the former neighborhood watch volunteer who is facing second-degree murder charges for the shooting of 17-year-old Martin, is awaiting trial set for June 10, 2013. His counsel’s move waiving his right to the April hearing leaves open the opportunity for it to be rolled into Zimmerman’s trial this summer, and gives the defense more time to prepare, an obvious concern after a motion to delay the proceedings was denied.

Flying aboard the International Space Station (I.S.S.) is not just fun and games; members of the crew have to examine their equipment to keep everything in ready to use conditions. One of them most important pieces of equipment is the spacesuit that is worn by astronauts when they leave the I.S.S. to go out into the universe.
Spacesuits are made to keep a human body alive in the harsh, anti-gravity, environment of space, but they are also used inside a ship if there should be a change of pressure. They are often constructed to help keep the wearer comfortable, keeping in mind mobility and the need to collect solid and liquid waste. I.S.S. Commander Chris Hadfield explains in his video that “Spacesuits are just really one person spaceships.”

It’s recommended that a woman consume on average 2,000 calories per day. But, if you’re not an avid calorie-counter with a pair of food scales in your handbag, it can be quite difficult to know the calorie content of everything that passes your lips.
But don’t fear, help is here. Buzzfeed have produced a helpful video showing what a 2,000-calorie serving actually looks like. And needless to say, it is taking the internet by storm.
Whether it’s 26 eggs, 50 bacon rashers or one whole pizza, this list is guaranteed to surprise (and disgust).

The body’s own “training manual” for attacking HIV has been recorded by US scientists and it is hoped it can be used to design vaccines.
HIV mutates in order to survive the onslaught of a patient’s immune system.
However, some patients develop highly effective antibodies that can neutralise huge swathes of HIV mutants.
A North Carolina team analysed the arms race between body and virus, published in the journal Nature, and has shown how these antibodies are made.
When someone is infected with HIV, their body produces antibodies to attack it. But the virus mutates and evades the offensive, so the body produces new antibodies that the virus then evades and the war goes on.

The recovery of Robert Griffin III continues to get rave reviews from his orthopedic surgeon, Dr. James Andrews.
Last month at the Scouting Combine, Andrews said Griffin’s recovery from torn anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments in his right knee was “way ahead of schedule.”
Then, in an interview with ESPN’s Stephania Bell on Friday, Andrews described Griffin as “superhuman” in his ability and motivation to recover. Andrews put South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore in the same category. Lattimore hopes to get drafted next month as he rehabs from a second torn ACL.
Andrews compared the rehabs of Griffin and Lattimore to those of Bo Jackson and Adrian Peterson.

Men going thin on top may be more likely to have heart problems than their friends with a full head of hair, according to researchers in Japan.
Their study of nearly 37,000 people, published in the online journal BMJ Open, said balding men were 32% more likely to have coronary heart disease.
However, the researchers said the risks were less than for smoking or obesity.
The British Heart Foundation said men should focus on their waistline, not their hairline.
A shifting hairline is a fact of life for many men. Half have thinning hair by their 50s and 80% have some hair loss by the age of 70.

Renowned American film critic Roger Ebert has died at 70 after a long battle with cancer.
Ebert, known for his thumbs-up or down reviews on a television programme with partner and friend Gene Siskel, became a film critic for the Sun-Times in 1967 and later won the Pulitzer Prize.
He was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2002, losing his jaw and his ability to speak in a subsequent surgery.
But he later resumed writing full-time and also returned to television.
On Tuesday, Ebert revealed on his popular blog that he faced a fresh bout with cancer and was taking a “leave of presence”, writing fewer reviews.
He suffered a hip fracture in December that he said “had recently been revealed to be a cancer”.
“It is being treated with radiation, which has made it impossible for me to attend as many movies as I used…

Smokers are less likely to be alive and cancer-free three years after having surgery for colon cancer than people who have never smoked, according to a new study.
Out of about 2,000 people who had part of their colon surgically removed, researchers found 74 percent of those who had never smoked were cancer-free three years later, compared to 70 percent of smokers.

It is one of the cosmos’ most mysterious unsolved cases: dark matter. It is supposedly what holds the universe together. We can’t see it, but scientists are pretty sure it’s out there.
Led by a dogged, Nobel Prize-winning gumshoe who has spent 18 years on the case, scientists put a $2 billion detector aboard the International Space Station to try to track down the stuff. And after two years, the first evidence came in Wednesday: tantalizing cosmic footprints that seem to have been left by dark matter.
But the evidence isn’t enough to declare the case closed. The footprints could have come from another, more conventional suspect: a pulsar, or a rotating, radiation-emitting star.
