Growing up, my mother always told me: “You’ll learn more from a journey of 10,000 miles than from reading 10,000 books.” For years I thought it was a saying she had invented, a justification for taking me out of school for weeks at a time to satisfy her love of travel. I later realized she was quoting an old Chinese proverb that summed up the importance of gaining firsthand experience when learning about new ideas, new people and new cultures.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — A new kind of global arms race is unfolding — and this one is measured in petaflops.
Titan, the U.S. Department of Energy’s top open science computer, is going live on Monday with an upgrade that will likely make it the fastest supercomputer on the planet. At 20 petaflops — that’s 20 quadrillion calculations each second — Titan outperforms by four petaflops the DOE’s Sequoia supercomputer, which has held the crown since June. The official “Top 500” ranking of the world’s fastest supercomputers will be announced next month.

“Star Trek” may have predicted the iPad and the iPhone, but who would have thought scientists could actually build a working tractor beam?
New York University physicists David Ruffner and David Grier have proposed how a working tractor beam might be assembled, according to a written statement. (For those who aren’t fans of the science fiction franchise, a tractor beam is a device that uses energy to pull an object toward itself.)

A 5,500-year-old tomb possibly belonging to a Stone Age chieftain has been unearthed at a megalithic monument in the shape of a ship called the Ale’s Stenar (Ale’s Stones). The tomb, in Sweden, was likely robbed of stones to build the Viking-era ship monument.
“We found traces — mostly imprints — of large boulders,” said lead archaeologist Bengst Söderberg of the Swedish National Heritage Board. “So my conviction is that some of the stones at least, they are standing on the ship setting.”
