The ancient Romans were pretty advanced for their time — so advanced that they may even have been pioneers of what we now call nanotechnology.
In fact, an ornately decorated Roman artifact, known as the Lycurgus cup, is inspiring researchers to explore practical applications of the ancient technology.
Created sometime in the Fourth Century, the goblet exhibits a color-changing property that makes its glass take on different hues, depending on the light source — just watch the cup in the video above.
Scientists were long at a loss to explain the cup’s color changes. Then in the 1990s they discovered tiny particles of silver and gold in the cup’s glass. According to Smithsonian Magazine, “When hit with light, electrons belonging to the metal flecks vibrate in ways that alter the color depending on the observer’s position.”
Now, a research team is attempting to build upon the unique technology and apply it in the medical field.
Gang Logan Liu, an University of Illinois assistant professor who has studied the Lycurgus cup for several years, described it as an “icon for inspiration.”

A 2-year-old Michigan boy is struggling to survive after allegedly suffering a severe beating from his mother’s boyfriend.
Damian Sutton is in critical condition at Children’s Hospital in Detroit in a medically-induced coma. He is suffering from swelling and bleeding in his brain, according to CBS Detroit.
The injuries reportedly happened while 26-year-old Ronald Dimambro, boyfriend to Damian’s mother Nicole Sutton, was babysitting the child Wednesday. The Washington Township man was arraigned and charged with first-degree felony child abuse, according to the Detroit News. He is being held on bail set at $500,000. Local ABC affiliate WXYZ-TV reports his lawyer entered a not guilty plea in court.
Damian’s mother told the news station that she trusted Dimambro and had no idea something like this could happen.

A cold case more than 20 years old has finally been solved in the death of a teenage girl, with her alleged killer finally behind bars, cops said.
Jason Tibbs, a 38-year-old man from Indiana, is accused of killing his then 16-year-old girlfriend, Rayna Rison, back in 1993, the AP reported.
Rison’s disappearance gained national attention and was featured on “America’s Most Wanted.” Her car was found empty just a few miles outside of LaPorte, Indiana. A week after finding the car, police found Tibbs’ letterman jacket hanging up on a tree branch. A month later, fishermen found Rison’s body in a pond a few miles away from the car.
Following a lead, detectives questioned a former friend of Tibbs, Eric Freeman, two months ago. Freeman admitted to police he drove Tibbs to Rayna Rison’s workplace at the Pine Lake Animal Hospital, where he watched the alleged former couple argue.

Wesley Warren Jr., better known as “The Man With The 132-Lb. Scrotum,” has two objectives right now: He wants to make money and speak the truth.
In May of 2008, in a household mishap, the Las Vegas man took a blow to his right testicle. “I woke up the next day, and my scrotum was the size of a honeydew melon,” he tells Marc Lamont Hill on HuffPost Live. “My personal hell was just beginning.”
With every passing month, Warren’s scrotum grew 3 pounds or more. And with no health insurance, he had little opportunity to seek help, until he became internationally known for his freakish bulge.
To cradle his watermelon-sized sex organ, he wore a hooded sweatshirt as pants, using the hood as a makeshift scrotum sling.

Lawrence Yahle refused to believe his dad was dead — and he was right.
The 17-year-old Ohio resident rushed into his father Anthony’s Kettering Medical Center hospital room after doctors told him his dad could not be revived, according to ABC News.
“Dad, you’re not going to die today,” Yahle said as he burst into the room.
“Moments later,” ABC News reports, Anthony Yahle’s heart monitor “showed signs of life,” and doctors were able to successfully revive him, 45 minutes after his heart had stopped beating and he had been declared dead.

Stargazers are thrilled over the surprise appearance of a star explosion, known as a nova, in the night sky last week, but there is more to this cosmic event than meets the eye.
The new Nova Delphinus 2013 was first spotted in the constellation Delphinus (The Dolphin) by Japanese amateur astronomer Koichi Itagaki on Aug. 14 and quickly confirmed by other skywatchers soon after. Novas are stars that are undergoing a powerful eruption, causing them to brighten significantly, so that they appear suddenly in the night sky where previously no star was visible.
Since its discovery, this nova has brightened rapidly to become an object visible to the naked eye, though stargazers will need to be away from city lights in order to see it clearly
Just how frequently does a nova become bright enough to be seen without the use of binoculars or a telescope?
On average, new novas are detected about once every four or five years. Over the last 112 years, there have been 47 novas that have flared into naked-eye view. The majority of these — 26 — were quite dim and could only be positively identified by using a star chart or sky atlas.

Photographer Justin Ng photographed Nova Delphinus 2013 on August 18, 2013. He is based in Singapore.

While the trial of Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger showed that he committed horrific crimes, testimony from witnesses also revealed a stunning degree of corruption in the U.S. Department of Justice that enabled the man who was eventually labeled as the FBI’s most wanted fugitive to operate in the city for years, a juror said.
Janet Uhlar-Tinney, a pediatric nurse and fiction writer from Cape Cod, is one of the 12 jurors who convicted Bulger. She feels the trial was tainted because of government corruption, including an FBI agent who leaked to Bulger details of an investigation targeting the mobster and who eventually tipped him off that he was about to be indicted – causing the mob boss to go on the run for more than 16 years until he was captured in California in 2011.
“He was a bad, bad man, but I’m just as stunned … I’m just as stunned by the corruption in government to get him in that courtroom,” Uhlar-Tinney said following the 2-month trial.

In the midst of the Vietnam War, after a bomb destroyed his family home and killed his wife and two of his sons, a desperate father grabbed his infant boy and fled into the forest.
There they stayed for 40 years, where, if Vietnamese media are to be believed, they lived in the wild and made no attempts to contact the outside world. Viet Nam News, an English news service, reports locals from the Tra Xinh Commune in Tay Tra District spotted the two several days ago and alerted police, who found them in a remote patch of jungle, living in a handmade hut, lifted several feet off the forest floor.
The father, Ho Van Thanh, who is now 82, was reportedly quite ill and brought to a hospital. His son, Ho Van Lang, 41, also emerged, and is said to be overwhelmed by his new surroundings.

Among whites, there was no association between race consciousness and blood pressure, but race consciousness was associated with poor ratings of adherence.
.
African Americans with a hypervigilant sense of being black may have an increased risk of hypertension, a cross-sectional analysis found.
Among 266 patients in urban clinics in Baltimore who were surveyed, being a race-conscious black patient was associated with significantly higher diastolic blood pressure (roughly 5 mmHg) and a tendency toward a higher systolic blood pressure (about 4 mmHg) than black patients who were not preoccupied with race.
There was no similar effect on race-conscious whites, reported Lisa A. Cooper, MD, MPH, director of the Johns Hopkins Center to Eliminate Cardiovascular Health Disparities in Baltimore, and colleagues in the American Journal of Hypertension.
The findings suggest that heightened race consciousness could at least in part account for the disproportionately high rate of hypertension in black Americans — the highest prevalence of any group in the U.S. and one of the highest rates in the world, researchers said.
