The Bonneville Salt Flats are a striking sight in daytime. At night the feel can be otherworldly. The darkness of Utah’s West Desert is punctuated here by a lone interstate highway and the town of Wendover, which provides illumination for the salt floor without overpowering the night sky.
The green glow along the horizon is from distant mercury vapor lighting in the Salt Lake City area, while the orange glow is from high pressure sodium vapor lighting.
Photographed about an hour earlier, the salt flats at dusk displays the surface texture of this expanse in a different light (literally!). – Martin van Hemert

A teenage Colorado girl whose remains were found dumped in a suitcase in a remote park area last month died from a drug overdose, the local coroner’s office said on Tuesday.
Kelly Mae Myers, 18, was reported missing in the mountain town of Grand Junction in December by relatives who said she may have tried to hitchhike to visit friends in Salt Lake City.
Police believe Myers died at a hotel in West Valley City, Utah, and that her body was then taken to the Cactus Creek area of Colorado. They have named two people of interest in her death.

A cigarette butt proved to be the undoing of a man suspected of killing a girl in Utah 18 years ago, after a sheriff trailed him for four days to grab the DNA evidence.
Without the efforts of Wasatch County Sheriff Todd Bonner, the case would have been forgotten long ago. For Bonner, however, it was personal. As the original investigator in the bludgeoning death of the teenage prostitute in 1995, he couldn’t let it go.
“It was haunting me my whole career,” Bonner told The Associated Press on Friday. “It doesn’t matter that she was a street girl. This is a 17-year-old girl – a human being. I could care less what she did for a living. She was doing what she had to survive.”
The body of Krystal Lynn Beslanowitch was found Dec. 6, 1995, along the Provo River near Midway.

WEST JORDAN, Utah — A 6-year-old girl found dead in a canal near her home was sexually assaulted, and authorities are now searching for a suspect, police said Wednesday.

Sierra Newbold, above, was found dead in a canal near her home less than an hour after her mother found she was missing from her bed. An autopsy has since determined that she was sexually assaulted before her death.
