It is one of the cosmos’ most mysterious unsolved cases: dark matter. It is supposedly what holds the universe together. We can’t see it, but scientists are pretty sure it’s out there.
Led by a dogged, Nobel Prize-winning gumshoe who has spent 18 years on the case, scientists put a $2 billion detector aboard the International Space Station to try to track down the stuff. And after two years, the first evidence came in Wednesday: tantalizing cosmic footprints that seem to have been left by dark matter.
But the evidence isn’t enough to declare the case closed. The footprints could have come from another, more conventional suspect: a pulsar, or a rotating, radiation-emitting star.

Researchers at Stanford University announced this week that they’ve created genetic receptors that can act as a sort of “biological computer,” potentially revolutionizing how diseases are treated.
In a paper published in the journal “Science” on Friday, the team described their system of genetic transistors, which can be inserted into living cells and turned on and off if certain conditions are met. The researchers hope these transistors could eventually be built into microscopic living computers. Said computers would be able to accomplish tasks like telling if a certain toxin is present inside a cell, seeing how many times a cancerous cell has divided or determining precisely how an administered drug interacts with each individual cell.

In a scene straight out of the 1958 horror flick “The Blob,” a new YouTube clip shows a lump of magnetic silly putty completely engulfing a magnet.
The event, captured by YouTube user Scott Lawson, actually took an hour and a half, but luckily we’re treated to a time-lapse view.
How does it work? “Ferromagnetic particles in the putty are strongly attracted to the magnet and very slowly engulf the surface of the magnet,” Lawson wrote in the video’s description. “The putty looks and feels like regular silly putty, but the difference lies in the fact that it has been infused with millions of micron-sized ferrous particles.”

Authorised decision to destroy video of brutal interrogations in Thailand
A woman has become head of the CIA’s National Clandestine Service for the first time, it emerged today.
The unnamed operative was made acting director of the service last month – evoking parallels to fictional female spies from the likes of Homeland and Zero Dark Thirty.
For the woman to be given the job permanently, however, officials may have to overlook her controversial background, which included ordering videos of alleged torture to be destroyed.

Suspicion in the slayings of a Texas district attorney and his wife shifted Monday to a violent white supremacist prison gang that was the focus of a December law enforcement bulletin warning that its members might try to attack police or prosecutors.
The weekend deaths of Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife, who were found fatally shot in their home, were especially jarring because they happened just a couple of months after one of the county’s assistant district attorneys, Mark Hasse, was killed near his courthouse office.
And less than two weeks ago, Colorado’s prison chief was shot to death at his front door, apparently by a white supremacist ex-convict who died in a shootout with deputies after fleeing to Texas.

Two inmates with long criminal histories – including one awaiting trial for capital murder – escaped an East Texas jail, dumped their black-and-white scrubs and were fleeing a manhunt Tuesday, authorities said.
Brian Allen Tucker of Sulphur Springs and John Marlin King of Cumby slipped past a fence around a recreation yard at the Hopkins County Jail around 8 a.m. Tuesday, officials with the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office said.
The two men dumped their jail uniforms on rail tracks near the jail, Deputy Alvin Jordan said. They had white T-shirts and boxer shorts on underneath, and Sheriff Butch Adams said it was possible they had clothes stashed on the outside.

We’ve seen a slew of robotic animals in the past year or so — robotic cockroaches, robotic tunafish, robotic dragonflies. And now, thanks to Virginia Tech, we’ve got two robotic jellyfish.
On May 29 of last year, Virginia tech engineers unveiled “Robojelly,” a robotic jellyfish “roughly the size of a man’s hand.” And last week, the same group of engineers revealed their second jelly named “Cyro,” who is 5 feet 7 inches tall and 170 pounds.
The U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare Center and the Office of Naval Research are funding the robotic jellyfish. According to a press release, the aim of the project “is to place self-powering, autonomous machines in waters for the purposes of surveillance and monitoring the environment, in addition to other uses such as studying aquatic life, mapping ocean floors, and monitoring ocean currents.”

It’s April Fools’ Day, and techies everywhere are getting in on the mischief. Given the Internet’s default fondness for ephemera and utterly pointless gestures, a day when pranks are sanctioned (or perhaps even expected) generally doesn’t disappoint. Usually, some of the best jokes are total malarkey.
But this year a British company called SwiftKey, which makes an intelligent touchscreen keyboard app for mobile devices, appears to have coded an Easter egg into its latest release that’s a functional — if not necessarily practical — joke. The feature, called SwiftKey Tilt, claims to offer a “full-body typing experience that allows users to use motion to enter text,” according to Phandroid.
.
SwiftKey Tilt is an April Fool’s Day joke that’s a real feature.
