Unrivalled control of a robotic arm has been achieved using a paralysed woman’s thoughts, a US study says.
Jan Scheuermann, who is 53 and paralysed from the neck down, was able to deftly grasp and move a variety of objects just like a normal arm.
Brain implants were used to control the robotic arm, in the study reported in the Lancet medical journal.
Experts in the field said it was an “unprecedented performance” and a “remarkable achievement”.

An experimental “Trojan-horse” cancer therapy has completely eliminated prostate cancer in experiments on mice, according to UK researchers.
The team hid cancer killing viruses inside the immune system in order to sneak them into a tumour.
Once inside, a study in the journal Cancer Research showed, tens of thousands of viruses were released to kill the cancerous cells.
Experts labelled the study “exciting,” but human tests are still needed.

Men look set to have a one in two chance of developing cancer in their lifetime, UK experts predict.
The increase to 50 out of 100, up from the current 44 in 100 chance, is largely down to people living longer – age is the biggest cancer risk factor, says Cancer Research UK.
The cancers set to increase the most in men within the next 15 years are bowel, prostate and skin (melanoma).
But more will survive cancer, thanks to better screening and treatments.

SINCE broadband began its inexorable spread at the start of this millenium, Internet use has expanded at a cosmic rate. Last year, the number of Internet users topped 2.4 billion — more than a third of all humans on the planet. The time spent on the screen was 16 hours per week globally — double that in high-use countries, and much of that on social media. We have changed how we interact. Are we also changing what we are?
We put that question to three people who have written extensively on the subject, and brought them together to discuss it with Serge Schmemann, the editor of this magazine. The participants: Susan Greenfield, professor of synaptic pharmacology at Oxford. She has written and spoken widely on the impact of new technology on users’ brains.

More people fear getting cancer than Alzheimer’s and heart disease combined, according to research from the MetLife Foundation.
For half of all men and a third of all women in the United States, that fear will come true. But it doesn’t have to be that way, says David Agus, MD, world-renowned oncologist and author of the best-selling book The End of Illness.
Agus, who was on the team of doctors that treated Steve Jobs, said he believes we can win the war on cancer — but not the way we’re fighting it now.
“We’ve made almost no impact on making people live longer with cancer,” he says in an interview for Daily Dose With Jillian Michaels, noting that the death rate is down only 8 percent over the past six decades.

Adding omega-3 fatty acids to your diet won’t cure rheumatoid arthritis, but it just might help relieve some of your worst symptoms, like joint pain and stiffness. Omega-3 fatty acids are called essential fatty acids because your body needs them but can’t make them. That means it’s up to you to make sure they’re part of your diet. Shortchange yourself, and you could experience memory loss, memory loss, and even depression.

Hi everyone. Cara Santa Maria here. You’ve heard the stories, right? Someone takes Ambien so they can sleep, and next thing they know, they’re waking up halfway across town with no memory of how they got there. From sleepwalking to sleep driving–and even sleep sex–Ambien has been implicated in a number of strange sleep behaviors. A friend of a friend of mine took Ambien, went to bed, and about a week later, she got all these packages in the mail. Apparently, while she was sleeping, she’d ordered a bunch of “hooker clothes” (her words)! So what is it about Ambien that can induce such bizarre behavior, and why do people continue to take it?

Just in the neck of time.
Doctors in Kansas treating a 7-month-old girl thought the child had a swollen gland, until they made a frightening discovery — a feather poking out of the baby’s neck.
Initially, doctors prescribed antibiotics and sent little Mya Whittington home with her parents, but then her jaw swelled to the size of a golfball, according to the Associated Press.

CARACAS, Venezuela — President Hugo Chavez is recovering favorably despite suffering complications during cancer surgery in Cuba, his vice president said Thursday amid uncertainty over the Venezuelan leader’s health crisis and the country’s political future.
A day after officials painted a grim picture of Chavez’s health, Vice President Nicolas Maduro announced at a political rally that his condition “has evolved from stable to favorable, which supports maintaining the diagnosis of an increasing recuperation.”
