Long stuck in fourth place, T-Mobile made itself a relevant mobile player in the United States again on Tuesday, with plans to rapidly roll out its 4G LTE network and offer bargain plans with no contracts to entice potential customers.
Oh, and it now offers that quaint little device called the iPhone 5.

Computer printers aren’t typically linked with the word “subversive,” but that’s the mission of a new site for 3D printer files.
Defcad was announced Tuesday at the South by Southwest Interactive conference. It is designed to give 3D printer enthusiasts access to files that allow them to create objects with their printers — even if those objects are protected by intellectual property laws.
Defcad is backed by Defense Distributed, an Austin, Texas group that recently made headlines by offering 3D printer files to make firearm parts.

Animated GIFs kind of come and go in popularity, but seem to be having a bit of a resurgence lately. GifMill is a free app for your iPhone or iPod touch that lets you take photos and create animated GIF images you can share with friends via Tumblr, Twitter, email or text message.
You can also use photos from your camera roll or even use short videos. Up to 100 stills can be used to create the GIF. Once the frames are selected you can control the frame rate and quality, and rearrange or delete frames from your sequence.

Writing software used to be so simple. A giant pain in the ass, mind you, but simple. You were a Microsoft developer, with binders full of Visual Studio CDs; you were a Java developer; you used the LAMP stack; or you worked with something proprietary from IBM or SAP or the like.
Nowadays, though, while the tools and technologies we use have improved enormously…imagine, God forbid, that you’re building some sort of web service. Should you use Ruby on Rails? Node.js? Python and Django? PHP and Drupal? .NET? Any of the panoply of Java servers? Something new and cool like Go or Scala? And how/where will you host your code? Amazon? Heroku? App Engine? Joyent? EngineYard? Force.com? How about your app? You’ll have an app, right? On which platforms? Native code? Hybrid HTML5? Cross-compiled with Xamarin? And then there’s your database…

Tokyoflash, maker of highly conceptual, anything-but-your-average-wristwatch products like the Kisai OTO and the Kisai Maru, is outing its latest device: the Kisai X. Like many of the company’s timepieces, the X is the result of fan submissions. In this case, it was co-designed by Firdaus Rohman and Heather Sable, who clearly were inspired by cryptography. Like several other Kisai watches, the X doesn’t put a priority on easily decipherable digits. In fact, it may take you a little while to master reading the watch face, which sports a pyramid display available with blue, green or red LEDs. The four triangular facets of the watch display the time with very stylized numbers — the image above shows the watch at 6:22, but we’d recommend checking out the video below for a closer look.

Microsoft is working on an interactive whiteboard which aims to interpret users’ sketches to complete the diagrams they were drawing.
The firm will unveil the prototype as part of Techfest – an annual event where its researchers reveal some of the projects they are working on.
The digital canvas is designed to help workers make sense of “big data” – the growing amount of information available from sensors and other sources.

Turns out that 2013 is, indeed, a Leap Year.
Leap Motion, the company that makes the hotly anticipated gesture-control device of the same name, announced Wednesday morning that the first Leap Motion units would ship to pre-orderers around the world on May 13, and that everyone could get their hands (and fingers) on one on May 19.
If you want one, you can order on Leap Motion’s website here or, somewhat curiously, on BestBuy.com right here. The Leap Motion Controller costs $80 at either outlet.
For a refresher, the Leap Motion controller plugs into almost any newer laptop and allows you to manipulate the screen via a series of hand and finger movements in the air. It’s sort of like having a touchscreen computer, but without actually touching the screen.
.

The Leap Motion Controller, which allows gesture control of both Mac and Windows laptops, will be released in May for $80. (Leap Motion)

Reusing everyday items can lead to a good deal of savings over time. Here, our experts discuss ways to repurpose common objects that are both useful in the kitchen and budget-friendly.
For instance, when you buy a bunch of oranges, think twice before tossing those mesh produce bags. With three of them you can make a handy and effective scrub sponge for free. First, cut off the tags and labels. Then, take a bag and tie a knot on one end. Next, stuff it with two more bags, and then knot the other end. You’ll have a great scrubber in seconds.

Guitar Pro (US$7.99, universal) is a tablature player and editor with some fantastic features. In essence, Guitar Pro is a library of songs in tablature score, which reads the score in audio, while helping you play along.
When learning to play guitar, there are usually three things you need. First, of course, is a guitar. Second, you need some instruction to tell you what to play and how to play it. Third, you need to hear what you’re learning to play, to make sure what you’re playing sounds the way it’s supposed to. I guess there’s a fourth category here too: a whole lot of practice is required!

Search engines have long memories. I think about this whenever I read new coverage of some immoral, misanthropic or illegal act. The kids who tweeted racist statements about Obama on Election Day, the college student whose secret videotaping of his gay roommate helped lead to the young man’s suicide, the catfishing of Manti T’eo. Years from now it’s possible, even likely, that when the perpetrators’ names are Googled, these histories will be what surfaces first for them. An employer, a girlfriend or boyfriend, or a neighbor will find out about what they once did years ago. Whatever the context, their past will be very hard to escape.
