Last December, a series of presidential hopefuls began courting Yvanna Cancela.
At 31, the former political director of the state’s legendarily powerful culinary workers’ union and campaign operative for then-Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., is Nevada’s first Latina state senator.
Ultimately, it was former Vice President Joe Biden who won the sweepstakes: When he called shortly before announcing his candidacy in April to talk about the state’s politics, Cancela cut him off and offered her endorsement, citing his “leadership” qualities as the determinative factor.
Any campaign would kill to have her making its case in this city’s union halls and community centers because her endorsement comes with much more on-the-ground political know-how and muscle than most, and, as a young woman of color who has fought for workers and gone to war with drug companies, she’s both a practitioner of the David-vs.-Goliath populism that ignites the party’s base and an embodiment of sought-after demographics.

A gunman in a high-rise hotel overlooking the Las Vegas Strip opened fire on a country music festival late Sunday, killing at least 58 people and injuring hundreds of others in the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.
The gunman, identified by police as Stephen Paddock, was later found dead by officers on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said during a news briefing Monday.
The shooting marked the nation’s latest outbreak of gunfire and bloodshed to erupt in a public place, again spreading terror as an American city became a war zone. The carnage in Las Vegas surpassed the death toll of 49 people slain in June 2016 when a gunman in Orlando, who later said he was inspired by the Islamic State, opened fire inside a crowded nightclub.

By the looks of things, retirement was treating Floyd Mayweather Jr. well.
He had a stable of boxers to promote, businesses, including a new strip club, to run, and a vast collection of luxury cars to enjoy. But there is a reason he embraces the nickname “Money Mayweather”: His brand was built as much on personality and spectacle as on skills in the boxing ring.
So when a rivalry with the mixed martial arts star Conor McGregor was manufactured over social media, Mayweather, 40, was more than happy to end his two-year retirement and to collect one final, potentially record-breaking paycheck. And he did it in the style that virtually everyone expected.

The final presidential debate here on Wednesday is teed up to be one of the nastiest and dirtiest in recent memory. Donald Trump is desperately trying to regain ground as he attacks women accusing him of sexual assault and sets up his supporters to believe that if Hillary Clinton wins, it means the election was rigged.
Trump is set to encounter a boisterous and hostile reception when he steps off his plane in Las Vegas. Workers at his own hotel will be picketing before and after their shifts on Tuesday, and union members will be constructing a wall of taco trucks outside his hotel on the day of the debate ― a reminder that it’s not only women he’s offended.
Clinton will also find resistance in this battleground state, as an ad in the local newspaper, shared by a Huffington Post reader, makes clear. The ad urges people to buy guns before “Crooked Hillary” wins in November.

UPDATE: 9:40 p.m. — Nevada officials ordered all Rejuvenice locations to shut down after discovering that the company was not licensed to perform cosmetic procedures, according to The Associated Press.
Previously:
A Henderson, Nevada, cryotherapy center manager froze to death inside one of the business’s freezing chambers, according to local news station KSNV.
The frozen body of Chelsea Ake, 24, was discovered by a fellow employee last Tuesday at Rejuvenice, a beauty salon that specializes in cryotherapy, the deep-freezing beauty and medical treatments.
Nevada’s Occupational and Safety Health Administration told KSNV that Ake was in the chamber for at least 10 hours before she was found and may have suffocated by inhaling the cooling nitrogen gases emitted into the chamber.

The first debate of the 2016 Democratic presidential primary will be defined by two moments: When the topic turned to Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-Vt.) chief vulnerability, Hillary Clinton jumped at the opportunity to draw a sharp contrast. When the roles were reversed, Sanders threw her a lifeline.
Those two exchanges — the first on gun control and the second on Clinton’s use of a private email account as secretary of state — exemplified not just the different political DNA of each candidate, it underscored the brewing intensity of a Democratic primary that few thought would be competitive.
Clinton’s overall performance will be remembered as the more forceful one, in part because the early questions played to her strengths. A back-and-forth on why Sanders didn’t consider himself a capitalist led to her defending robust regulations, with him touting Denmark.

It took Microsoft three tries, but it finally scored a hit with the Surface Pro 3, which the company touts as the “tablet that can replace your laptop.”
Now, three former Google engineers are running with that idea in the Android arena.
The Remix tablet, unveiled on Wednesday at CES 2015 by Chinese company Jide, looks a lot like one of Microsoft’s Surface devices. It’s about the same size with an 11.6-inch screen, and the edge has a similar trapezoid shape that makes it suited to sitting at an angle. The Remix also has both a kickstand and a magnetically attached keyboard — two Surface hallmarks. Even the volume control feels the same.

An Arizona shooting instructor has died after a 9-year-old student accidentally shot him in the head.
Charles Vacca, 39, was pronounced dead on Monday, according to a press release from the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office. Vacca was an instructor at Bullets and Burgers, an outdoor shooting range about 25 miles away from Las Vegas, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Investigators say he was shot with an automatic Uzi around 10 a.m. Monday while teaching a 9-year-old to use the gun. When she pulled the trigger, recoil sent the weapon flying over her head.

Two police officers were “simply having lunch” at a strip mall pizza buffet in Las Vegas when a man and a woman fatally shot them at point-blank range, then fled to a nearby Walmart where they killed a third person and then themselves in an apparent suicide pact, authorities said.
The attack at a CiCi’s Pizza restaurant Sunday killed Officers Alyn Beck, 41, and Igor Soldo, 31, who are both husbands and fathers. One of the shooters yelled, “This is a revolution,” but a motive remains under investigation, Las Vegas police spokesman Larry Hadfield told The Associated Press.
“It’s a tragic day,” Sheriff Doug Gillespie said at a news conference Sunday afternoon. “But we still have a community to police, and we still have a community to protect. We will be out there doing it with our heads held high, but with an emptiness in our hearts.”

This week’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas may be the place where the likes of Samsung and Panasonic announce their latest TVs and cameras, but it’s also full of extremely weird — yet sometimes surprisingly useful — devices from big companies and small.
Full-body gaming suit
As for virtual reality, this guy is experiencing the next best thing. The PrioVR “gaming exoskeleton” puts trackers on your head, body, arms, and legs — but you still play games on the TV, at least for now. All this might be obsoleted by 3-D tracking systems like the Kinect, but there’s something special about getting wired up with all that gear. The zombies don’t stand a chance.
