The word “drone” tends to conjure up images of planes that kill terrorists or of creepy surveillance tools.
But tiny drone airplanes made of foam may be more useful in rural environments, one researcher says. There, the fliers could revolutionize agriculture, reducing the need for pesticides and improving crop production.
Because drones can fly cheaply at a low altitude, they can get highly detailed images of cropland, said Chris Anderson, the CEO of 3D Robotics and former editor-in-chief of Wired, here on Saturday (May 18) at this year’s Maker Faire Bay Area, a two-day celebration of DIY science, technology and engineering. Drone-captured close-ups of fields could help farmers tailor their pesticide treatment and identify subtle differences in soil productivity. [Rise of the Drones: Photos of Unmanned Aircraft]

Few things match the thrill of getting an incredible deal on an item we really crave. It’s a basic human response that we all can relate to.
That’s why auctions are so much fun – they present the titillating chance of scoring something for a lot less than we would expect. And that leaves us feeling great, because we now have the object of our desire and we have money left in our pocket.
Marketers know this and exploit it all the time –hence the profusion of sales, discounts, coupons, and the like… so much so, in fact, that we become numb to the tactic. People just don’t believe they’re really getting a bargain.
But now there’s a new online company that has actually figured out a way to sell new must-have consumer products for jaw-dropping prices.
It’s called QuiBids – and it turns out that they are selling everything from the latest new Apple iPads and iPods, to MAC and PC notebooks, to HDTV’s and gift cards from the top retailers at prices as low as 5% of regular retail prices.

If you have friends, family, and business associates overseas that you talk to, you know it’s not cheap. Most phone plans have hefty charges for international calling, so staying in touch can leave you with a fat bill at the end of the month. You can try using phone cards, but the savings are not always impressive, and it can be a hassle to deal with all those PIN numbers.
While there are ways to communicate cheaply through services such as Skype, free calling generally requires both parties to be at their PC when talking, or the use of inconvenient Wi-fi access during the call.
Now however, there is a new company that has developed some very clever programs that allow you to easily call anyone at hugely reduced rates. And, if you’re calling to one of 50 different countries, you can make the call for free. The service is called Rebtel, and they’ve been building their international presence since 2006. Today, they have over 10 million users—so, they must be doing something right!

Just when you thought the 3D gun was dead, it’s back. Just Thursday, the company that made the 3D gun blueprints, Defense Distributed, was forced to take the blueprints off of its site by the U.S. Department of State.
The issue, then? The plans had already been downloaded over 100,000 times before it was taken down and quickly ended up on Pirate Bay.
There gun has been uploaded to torrenting site Pirate Bay multiple times, and has been downloaded from the site thousands of times.
There is really no way to stop the spread of the 3D gun. Now that the blueprints have made their to Pirate Bay there is no way they’re being taken off. “TPB has for close to 10 years been operating without taking down one single torrent due to pressure from the outside. And it will never start doing that,” A Pirate Bay insider told TorrentFreak, which first pointed out the 3D gun on the now-Icelandic site. The only thing that’s currently stopping more 3D guns from being printed is the limited availability of 3D printers themselves.

Looks like those ill-advised sexy pics you sent last month could come back to haunt you after all.
Snapchat, the iOS and Android photo-sharing app used by millions to send self-destructing media files, does not actually delete the files, according to digital forensics examiner Richard Hickman. This means that the application’s allure of guiltless sharing is not technically true, as pictures and can be retrieved, transferred and saved — if you know where to look.
“The actual app is even saving the picture,” Hickman told Utah-based news outlet KSL. “They claim that it’s deleted, and it’s not even deleted. It’s actually saved on the phone.”

In the next five years or so, scientists are poised to discover proof that space and time can wrinkle in the form of gravitational waves. These waves were predicted almost 100 years ago by Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity, but have yet to be seen.
That could change soon when the latest, most sensitive experiments hunting gravitational waves come online. “There’s so much activity and excitement in the field right now,” said Mansi M. Kasliwal, an astronomer at the Observatories of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Pasadena, Calif. “The momentum is really building.”
Kasliwal is the author of a paper published online today (May 2) in the journal Science describing the burgeoning field of gravitational wave studies.

Air Microphone is a US$0.99 app that uses AirPlay to connect your iPhone to an Apple TV or AirPlay-equipped amplifier to give you a wireless microphone.
The app is not hard to use. After launch, go to the multitasking bar on the iPhone and select any AirPlay device and start talking. In my tests, the app worked pretty well on an AppleTV with a few caveats. There are options for three EQ settings. “Normal” was just fine. “Less Bass” made me sound like a parrot, and “More Bass” made me sound like a giant Cyclops. Way too thundering, if you get my drift. The app also lets you select a photo to display on the Apple TV during your talk, but the image is proportioned like the iPhone screen in portrait mode, so I don’t think it adds too much.

Aside from the (admittedly considerable) appeal of watching Robert Downey Jr. crack wise as billionaire genius-turned-superhero Tony Stark, perhaps the biggest lure of Marvel’s Iron Man movies is finding out just what kind of amazing toys and gadgets he’s built into the latest version of his high-tech armor this time around. Although such innovations as a costume that unfolds itself from a suitcase onto your body (Iron Man 2‘s “Mark V” armor) or clothes that follow you around when you wear special bracelets (Marvel’s The Avengers‘s Mark VII armor) remain the stuff of science fiction, a surprising amount of the tech on display in the Iron Man mythos has counterparts in our world, even if the reality is a bit less colorful and unlikely to help us in the case of a Chitauri invasion.
From strength-enhancing exoskeletons to repulsor rays and sentient robot sidekicks, becoming a real-life Iron Man wouldn’t be easy — and it definitely wouldn’t be cheap — but it wouldn’t be entirely outside the realm of possibility, either.

Researchers have identified the voice of Alexander Graham Bell for the first time in some of the earliest audio recordings held at the Smithsonian Institution.
The National Museum of American History announced Wednesday that Bell’s voice was identified with help from technicians at the Library of Congress and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California. The museum holds some of the earliest audio recordings ever made.
Researchers found a transcript of one recording signed by Bell. It was matched to a wax disc recording from April 15, 1885.
“Hear my voice, Alexander Graham Bell,” the inventor said.

If a squat, cardboard-framed robot with a high-pitched voice started asking you questions, would you answer it? Would you share your troubles? Unload your concerns?
Many people would — at least, that’s what roboticist and artist Alex Reben has found. He unleashed the smiling bot Boxie in the halls of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to see what people would share with a robot. His work and other research suggest we’re not so averse to bearing our souls to the bots. In some cases, we’ll even tell them things we wouldn’t admit to each other.
In fact, Reben suggests robots and dogs aren’t so different.
“Dogs are basically a human invention. They’re a technology,” Reben told HuffPost Live. “We’ve bred them to be companions over millennia, just like we’re designing robots, we’ve designed dogs to be companions.”
