Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg reaped a gain of nearly $2.3 billion last year when he exercised 60 million stock options just before the online social networking leader’s initial public offering.
The windfall detailed in regulatory documents filed Friday saddled Zuckerberg, 28, with a massive tax bill. He raised the money to pay it by selling 30.2 million Facebook Inc. shares for $38 apiece, or $1.1 billion, in the IPO.
Facebook’s stock hasn’t closed above $38 since the IPO was completed last May. The shares gained 71 cents Friday to close at $26.85.

Carolee Sadie Ashby’s family has spent the past 45 years wondering who was driving the car that fatally struck the 4-year-old girl as she crossed a street in her upstate New York hometown on Halloween night.
Thanks to a retired detective’s Facebook post, authorities provided an answer Wednesday: A man who police say misled them when questioned about the girl’s death in 1968 and then sat on the secret for more than four decades.
Douglas Parkhurst, 62, of the town of Oswego, has been identified as the driver of a car that failed to stop after hitting Carolee, the Fulton Police Department said.
Parkhurst won’t be charged because the statute of limitations has expired, police said. An Oswego County phone number for him has been disconnected.

American Express (Amex) has launched a purchase-by-tweet service for its US-based customers.
Credit-card holders post a specific hashtag on Twitter to trigger payments from their accounts.
Products from Amazon, Sony and Microsoft are being offered at a discount to entice shoppers to use the new service.
However, one retail expert dismissed the initiative as a “gimmick” that was unlikely to catch on.
This is not Amex’s first tie-up with social media.

As promised, here’s the first-ever official Connectome Q&A! We’ve been getting lots of incoming questions on our Facebook and Twitter pages – some of them on the technical side; others of the more “general interest” variety. Most of these questions require pretty involved answers – and it’s important to me that each of them gets the full treatment it deserves.
So for today’s Q&A, I’ve decided to focus on just one question. That doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten the others, though – we keep everything archived, and we’ll be doing plenty more Q&As in the future. So keep sending those neuroscience queries and article requests our way.

Thanks to the residents of a Texas city and a Facebook campaign that has gone viral, an abused dog who was was left for dead in a garbage bag has been given a new chance at life.
The pooch, who has since been named “Buck,” was reportedly found on Jan. 5, after a local resident of Conroe, Tex., noticed that a garbage bag left on the side of the road and “tied to a t-post of a fence” was moving. He tore the bag open and was shocked to find the 3-year-old mixed breed, covered in blood and weakened by the cold, inside.

Sometime in mid-July, Anthony Dowdell put on his favorite plaid shirt, drove his Dodge pickup to the parking lot of a Sam’s Club in Linden, N.J., leaned back in the driver’s seat, and shot himself.
Nobody knows exactly when the 39-year-old, who went by the online moniker “Dare Dellcan,” took his life. Nobody knows why the normally cheery creative director and design company owner did it. And for the first couple of days, few people besides the police officers who found his body on July 16 knew he was dead.

Two years ago, Facebook’s security team began noticing a surge in a particular strain of computer virus. The malicious software stole credit card information and other personal data belonging to thousands of Facebook users and spammed their friends with links to rogue websites, creating a global network of infected PCs.At first, Facebook played defense, helping victims clean their computers and attempting to block each new strain of the malware known as “Yahos.” But the virus kept mutating to avoid detection. So Facebook’s researchers did something unusual for a business being hacked: They investigated the hackers themselves, placing the giant social network at the forefront of a more combative strategy in the war against cybercrime.
