COPD is often misunderstood because symptoms can be caused by three different diseases. Separating fact from fiction will help you live better and better manage COPD.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can be confusing because it isn’t a single condition — it actually refers to a group of lung diseases that makes it difficult to breathe.
“COPD is an umbrella term for three different diseases,” says Timothy R. Wu, MD, director of the COPD Center at Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass. Emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and chronic asthmatic bronchitis can all cause COPD symptoms. What these diseases have in common is obstructed air flow through the lungs.

Beyond exercise and healthy eating, there are plenty of things you can do while you’re younger to ward off dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Rates of dementia and Alzheimer’s have been on the rise. The Alzheimer’s Association reports that, as of last year, 5.4 million Americans were living with the disease — that’s one in eight seniors — and it’s the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. As rates go up, so too does the concern about our ability to care for growing numbers of people with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Until a cure for Alzheimer’s is discovered, researchers emphasize precautions younger people can take now that may ward off or delay the chance of developing the disorder. From staying active to eating a healthy diet to just being social, there are a number of moves you can make to minimize your Alzheimer’s and dementia risk.

Did you know that the particles in a sneeze travel at 100 miles per hour? Find out more fun facts about sneezing.
Why do we sneeze? The long-standing answer has been that sneezing is a reflex. When irritants — such as germs, dust, pollen, animal dander, or pollutants, just to name just a few — infiltrate the nose lining, the brain sends out a signal to get rid of it. That triggers a deep breath, which gets held in the lungs. As a result, the chest muscles tighten and pressure builds. The tongue pushes against the roof of the mouth, forcing breath to come out fast through the nose — Achoo!

A new film about the healing power of music shows how people with Alzheimer’s and other degenerative diseases can be ‘awakened’ by simply listening to songs from their past. Get ready to cry.
Having a bad day? We can fix that.
There’s a new video making the rounds right now, and it’s pretty much guaranteed to make you feel better about being alive. We don’t want to oversell it, but if you have a heart, this will warm it.
The six-minute video — which is actually a clip from a new documentary, Alive Inside, about the power of music to “awaken” the minds of people with Alzheimer’s and other degenerative diseases — revolves around an elderly man named Henry, who has been in a nursing home for over a decade with seizures and memory loss.

More people fear getting cancer than Alzheimer’s and heart disease combined, according to research from the MetLife Foundation.
For half of all men and a third of all women in the United States, that fear will come true. But it doesn’t have to be that way, says David Agus, MD, world-renowned oncologist and author of the best-selling book The End of Illness.
Agus, who was on the team of doctors that treated Steve Jobs, said he believes we can win the war on cancer — but not the way we’re fighting it now.
“We’ve made almost no impact on making people live longer with cancer,” he says in an interview for Daily Dose With Jillian Michaels, noting that the death rate is down only 8 percent over the past six decades.

With the chill in the air in many parts of the country and the threat of blizzards brewing, that long awaited trip to the islands couldn’t come at a better time.
And as with any vacationer traveling to a hot climate, the No. 1 item on your packing list is sunscreen. However, according to a new study published in Genetics, that SPF 40 may not completely protect you from the repercussions of the sun’s dangerous rays. Turns out, your genes may put you at greater risk for skin cancer than UV exposure.

Along with exercise, your diet is the most important part of managing type 2 diabetes. If you have a sweet tooth, finding healthy desserts might seem like a challenge — but there are solutions.
“Most desserts are full of sugar and can rack up your carbohydrate allowance in one small serving,” says Lanah J. Brennan, RD, a nutrition expert and certified diabetes educator practicing in Lafayette, La. “The extra carbohydrates and fats that we consume when eating desserts can elevate your blood glucose and hinder your weight-loss attempts.”
