Nine years ago, Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon set the standard for what folk music should sound like with For Emma, Forever Ago. Friday, he will break it.
That’s when Bon Iver’s mysterious third album, 22, A Million drops via Jagjaguwar following five years of relative silence. As previews of tracks “22 (OVER S??N)” and “10 d E A T h b R E a s T ? ?” have already shown, fans looking for lead singer Vernon’s wind-like falsetto singing about ripe countrysides and winter’s intimacy will find themselves disappointed and confused.
Where Bon Iver’s past two records have evoked a man content in his Thoreau-like reclusiveness, 22, A Million seems like a portrait of a man after the isolation has driven him mad. Instead of familiar places or pet names, the tracklist features obscure symbols and numbers scattered alongside art that’s proved irresistible for Illuminati pop culture conspiracy theorists. Snippets of pitched dialogue punctuate the uneasy ambience the songs stir up with warped, lo-fi drums and stacks of heavily processed synths and saxophones. It sounds like Bon Iver fed through a wood chipper and sewn together on a back alley operating table.

In December, Trevor Noah, a 31-year-old comedian, made his debut as an on-air contributor on “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart,” offering his outsider’s perspective, as a biracial South African, on the United States.
“I never thought I’d be more afraid of police in America than in South Africa,” he said with a smile. “It kind of makes me a little nostalgic for the old days, back home.”
Now, after only three appearances on that Comedy Central show, Mr. Noah has gotten a huge and unexpected promotion. On Monday, Comedy Central announced that Mr. Noah would be the new host of “The Daily Show,” succeeding Mr. Stewart after he steps down later this year.

The first Halo game for the next-generation Xbox One will come out in fall 2015, Microsoft announced Friday morning.
Halo 5: Guardians is a larger effort than Halo 4, the game’s developer wrote in an Xbox Wire blog post.
“That applies to the content and scope of the game, as well as the technology in what’s now a brand new and more powerful engine,” wrote Bonnie Ross, general manager of 343 Industries.

Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo claims she didn’t want to do the controversial footwear photo shoot at the Taj Mahal, a move that could allegedly land her and others in jail for two years if found guilty.
On Monday, the Hindustan Times reported officials from the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) would file a police complaint against Miss Universe for her Oct. 6 visit to the Taj Mahal because of a footwear photo shoot that took place on the grounds of the world wonder.
Apparently, Culpo modeled pairs of shoes at the marble ledge known as the Diana Seat, using the Taj Mahal as a backdrop, without permission from ASI.
“The sandals from a bag she carried were taken and placed on the Diana Seat for shooting pictures, which is not permitted by the ASI (Archaeological Survey of India),” Taj caretaker Munazzar Ali told India’s Mid-Day paper, according to the Hindustan Times. “It also amounts to disrespect and insult.”

Photographer Michael Pharaoh is only 22 years old. Yet already, he possesses the uncanny ability to capture the story written on a stranger’s face.
New Zealand-based Pharaoh created the gripping series “The Homeless of L.A.” while on vacation in California. The photographs evoke, in tremendous detail, the identity of Hollywood’s homeless population in a series of muted yet stylistically gorgeous up-close portraits.
“[The project] was fascinating to me because we don’t have the same plethora of homeless people as L.A,” Pharaoh explained in a statement for the series. “It was interesting to hear all of their stories and how they came to live on the streets. This project was both a sad yet humbling one.”
While the homeless population is all too often treated as invisible, Pharaoh’s high definition portraits explore every facet of their visages to capture a striking and honest portrait of a complete stranger.

A southern Illinois man was ordered jailed on $5 million bond Wednesday on charges he slashed and stabbed his 7-year-old niece after claiming, according to prosecutors, that she fell and pierced her neck on a stick and needed to be put “out of her misery.”
Justin DeRyke, 22, faces three counts of first-degree murder. Prosecutors allege he stabbed Willow Long in the chest with a knife Sunday.
As first reported by the Effingham Daily News, Effingham County State’s Attorney Bryan Kibler said DeRyke told investigators he was baby-sitting Willow and her 3-year-old brother. His sister and the children’s mother, Ciara DeRyke, lived at the Watson home with them and her and Justin’s parents.
