The record loss of Arctic sea ice this summer will echo throughout the weather patterns affecting the U.S. and Europe this winter, climate scientists said on Wednesday, since added heat in the Arctic influences the jet stream and may make extreme weather and climate events more likely.

Oscar Pistorius is off to a good start at the 2012 Summer Paralympics, setting a new world record Saturday in his 200m heat.
The 25-year-old South African, who competed in the 400m and 4x400m relay at the London Olympic Games, won his heat in 21.30 seconds, shaving more than half a second off the previous record set by Brazilian Alan Oliveira in an earlier heat.

The days of human lifeguards watching over us on the beach are numbered. Or at least they will be if the Japanese have got anything to do with it.
Researchers at the Tokyo Institute of Technology have unveiled a new robot modelled on Olympic athletes that could be the lifeguard of the future.

WASHINGTON — The reelection campaign of Barack Obama is back in the lead on the fundraising front after raising $114 million in August. The total, which is a combination of funds raised by the campaign, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and Obama’s victory committee, exceeds the $111.6 million the Romney campaign said that they raised in combination with the Republican National Committee (RNC) and Romney Victory for the same time period. This marks the first time since the Romney campaign and the RNC started raising money together that the Obama team has beaten them in monthly fundraising.

A Georgia woman’s heartwarming act is making headlines this week, poignantly proving the power of kindness, even between two strangers.
Branden Whitehead, a 20-year-old college student, was walking home from school last month when he was struck and critically injured in a hit and run accident, MyFoxAtlanta.com reported. The West Georgia Technical College student walks 15 miles to and from school, carrying a heavy bag of books–the trek takes four and a half hours.

South Carolina police are looking for Gabrielle “Gabby” Swainson, a 15-year-old cheerleader who disappeared over the weekend while her mother was at work.
“We’re going into day five now and that’s not somewhere that we wanted to be. We need to bring her home,” said Chandra Cleveland-Jennings, an investigator with the Columbia [S.C.] Protection Agency, a security group hired by the family to assist in the case.

Cough, shortness of breath, and tightness in the chest are some common symptoms of COPD.
Millions of Americans suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a progressive loss of lung function, but many might not know they have it. COPD symptoms often go ignored. “The most common symptom is shortness of breath,” says Norman Edelman, MD, chief medical officer for the American Lung Association in Washington, D.C. “It may be very subtle. A person might just think ‘I’m getting a little puffy on the golf course, I’m getting old, fat.’ People tend to put it aside and not worry about it.”

Many deep-sea squid dispel an ink cloud to flee a predator, but one species goes a step farther: It ensures a getaway by counterattacking and then ditching the tips of its arms. These detached bits can continue to twitch and emit bioluminescent light—likely providing a vital distraction. By catching this strange maneuver on camera, scientists have established Octopoteuthis deletron as the only known squid to drop portions of its arms in self-defense, much as lizards drop their tails before escaping.

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton highlighted a stunning fact during his speech at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday: Democratic presidents have overseen the creation of nearly twice as many jobs as Republican presidents since 1961.
“What’s the job score? Republicans, 24 million; Democrats, 42 [million],” Clinton said to cheers and applause.
