WASHINGTON — More than 200 adults have been arrested in an international investigation of child pornography, Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Thursday.
The agency’s director, John Morton, said 123 child victims were identified during the five-week investigation, which ended in early December. ICE and local authorities found 110 victims in 19 U.S. states, while the others were living in six countries elsewhere.

PORTLAND, Maine — A smuggling ring brought narwhal tusks from the Canadian Artic into Maine in a trailer with a secret compartment and then illegally sold them to American buyers, officials said.
Andrew Zarauskas, of Union, N.J., and Jay Conrad, of Lakeland, Tenn., will be arraigned in Bangor, Maine, next week on 29 federal smuggling and money laundering charges each.
For nearly a decade, two Canadians smuggled the whale tusks into Maine and shipped them via FedEx to Zarauskas, Conrad and other unnamed American buyers, according to an indictment.

HONG KONG — Shark fin traders in Hong Kong have laid out thousands of fins on rooftops in what appears to be a move to escape public scrutiny of their industry.
Thousands of the freshly cut fins were seen blanketing the roof of an industrial building in Hong Kong this week.
Environmental campaigner Gary Stokes, who took the first photos of the drying on Jan. 1, said Friday that the traders usually dried their fins on the sidewalks. He suspected that the traders went upstairs to avoid pressure from concerned passers-by.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, sidelined for almost a month by a string of medical problems, is upbeat and planning to return to work next week, the State Department said Thursday.
One day after being released from the New York hospital that was treating a blood clot in her head, Clinton was at home resting, but was far from idle. She spent the day engaging with senior staff, reviewing paperwork and calling in to a meeting of her foreign policy advisory board, said her spokeswoman, Victoria Nuland.
“She’s looking forward to getting back to the office,” Nuland said. “She is very much planning to do so next week.”

Jennifer Lawrence continues her tradition of giving amazing quotes in interviews with a cover story for Vanity Fair’s February 2013 issue.
The 22-year-old, who is never afraid of a little self deprecation, described herself as “vastly uneducated,” and doesn’t have any pretenses about her career.
“Not to sound rude, but [acting] is stupid,” Lawrence told Vanity Fair. “Everybody’s like, ‘How can you remain with a level head?’ And I’m like, ‘Why would I ever get cocky? I’m not saving anybody’s life. There are doctors who save lives and firemen who run into burning buildings. I’m making movies. It’s stupid.’”

BEIJING — The world’s tallest woman has died in eastern China. She was 39.
Chinese state media say Yao Defen died on Nov. 13 at her home in China’s eastern province of Anhui.
Guinness World Records in January 2010 had certified her as the world’s tallest living woman at 7 feet and 7 inches (233.3 centimeters).
The local Xin’an Evening News did not give the cause of death but said in a report that Yao suffered from gigantism, with a tumor on her pituitary gland disrupting her levels of growth hormone. A government official in her county who gave only his surname, Liu, confirmed Yao’s death on Wednesday.
.

Yao Defen was 7-feet 7-inches tall.

A record 1 billion people will travel across an international border as a tourist in 2012, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council.
That means that one in seven people on the planet will participate in world traveling this year, an activity that just a few decades ago was exclusively for the wealthy. The reasons for the upswing range from prosperity in developing countries like China to a perception of a more peaceful world.
The London-based council, whose members include executives of travel companies, compiles global travel data including international airport traffic and visa records. It calculates that the 1 billionth tourist will cross an international boundary on Dec. 13.

If you thought a soldier’s best friend was a weapon, guess again. Meet LS3 (Legged Squad Support System) — the four-legged machine being developed for military use by engineering firm, Boston Dynamics. The outfit designed the not-so-cuddly contraption (aka AlphaDog) under contract by DARPA to work as an aid alongside US troops. BD has been advancing this particular beast for more than two years, which has already proved it can carry up to 400 pounds of gear for about 20 miles without refueling. Just a few months ago, the robot was upgraded to jog at about 5MPH over rugged terrain to up the ante even further — an improvement over its slower-moving and noisy predecessor.

Breaking Point: I decided to change my life for the better and put myself on a path towards becoming healthier. It was especially important to me to do this for my children. The “new” me was about to start.

A new film about the healing power of music shows how people with Alzheimer’s and other degenerative diseases can be ‘awakened’ by simply listening to songs from their past. Get ready to cry.
Having a bad day? We can fix that.
There’s a new video making the rounds right now, and it’s pretty much guaranteed to make you feel better about being alive. We don’t want to oversell it, but if you have a heart, this will warm it.
The six-minute video — which is actually a clip from a new documentary, Alive Inside, about the power of music to “awaken” the minds of people with Alzheimer’s and other degenerative diseases — revolves around an elderly man named Henry, who has been in a nursing home for over a decade with seizures and memory loss.
