Last week, a New Zealand coroner linked the 2010 death of Natasha Harris, a 31-year-old mother of eight, to health complications brought on by her excessive consumption of Coca-Cola.
The coroner, David Crerar, did not hold the Coca-Cola company responsible for the woman’s death. However, he recommended that warning labels be placed on soft drinks in an effort to educate the public about the health risks associated with overconsumption of sugary, caffeinated beverages.

Have you heard the one about the nine-year-old guitarist from Atlanta Georgia who moseyed in to Las Vegas and blew George Lynch away? It happened last weekend at the Rock ‘N’ Roll Fantasy Camp.
Noisecreep has been on hand at the camp enough times to know that once in a while it teenage prodigy will turn up and play way beyond his years. But Benjamin Bluestein caused a lot of jaws to drop, including that of famed shredder George Lynch (ex-Dokken, T&N), who had a chance to play guitar with the youngster.
As excited as everyone was about visiting rock royalty Alice Cooper, Ace Frehley, Jordan Rudess and Mike Portnoy, there was also a pretty big buzz about this kid who’s only been playing guitar for two years.

In what some are calling a bionic hand breakthrough, scientists in Switzerland reported the development of a “smart” artificial hand that lets amputees feel what they’re touching or holding.
The experimental prosthesis connects directly to an amputee’s nervous system, providing realistic sensory feedback — giving amputees “dexterity and the sensation of touch,” according to a written statement.
“We could be on the cusp of providing new and more effective clinical solutions to amputees in the next years,” lead researcher Dr. Silvestro Micera, head of the Translational Neural Engineering Laboratory at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale in Lausanne, said in the statement.

Scientists say the Martian soil at the rover Curiosity’s landing site contains minerals similar to what’s found on Hawaii’s Mauna Kea volcano.
The finding released Tuesday is the latest step in trying to better understand whether the environment could have been hospitable to microbial life.
Curiosity recently ingested its first soil sample and used one of its instruments to tease out the minerals present. An analysis revealed it contained feldspar and olivine, minerals typically associated with volcanic eruptions. Mission scientists say the Martian soil is similar to volcanic soil on the flanks of Mauna Kea.

This handout photo provided by NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS, taken Oct. 15, 2012, shows part of the small pit or bite created when NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity collected its second scoop of Martian soil at a sandy patch called “Rocknest.” The bright particle near the center of this image, and similar ones elsewhere in the pit, prompted concern because a small, light-toned shred of debris from the spacecraft had been observed previously nearby. However, the mission’s science team assessed the bright part

A gelatinous, semi-opaque slime that appeared mysteriously in an English nature park has proved a brain teaser for area scientists. Others have posited that the material may have extraterrestrial origins.
The substance, which some are calling a “jelly,” was found at the RSPB Ham Wall Nature reserve in Somerset, according to Yahoo! News.
Steve Hughes, site manager at Ham Wall, said the jelly was unlike anything he’d ever seen before.

For one year’s work as a full-time music teacher in New York City more than a decade ago, Aryeh Eller has collected almost $1 million in salary from the city.
Eller, 46 years old, was removed from his post at Hillcrest High School in Queens in 1999 and confessed to numerous allegations that he sexually harassed female students, the New York Post reports.
But like dozens of other New York City “rubber room” cases, an independent arbitrator determined that Eller couldn’t be fired because the city failed to inform the teacher of his rights. But the city’s Department of Education, deeming Eller unfit for the classroom but also unable to fire him, placed him in a holding room and reassigned him to administrative duty.

Frederick Gilliard, of Blackpool, England, told police he “just lost it” when he attacked his wife, Josephine, last year with a gnome and an 8-inch carving knife.
Lancashire Police said in a news release that Gilliard denied the original charge of murder but plead guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

Over the years, Mophie has become synonymous with extending the iPhone’s battery life. The outfit’s range of battery-filled iPhone cases has garnered rave reviews across the industry, and even I religiously used one on an iPhone 3G. In more recent days, the company has cautiously expanded into a few new areas — namely, building battery cases for non-Apple phones, and creating the contraption shown above. The Mophie Outride is an action-cam case that’s designed to be strapped onto helmets, automobile hoods and any other place where your average X Games wannabe would look to capture extreme sports footage.

Until a couple of years ago I didn’t even realise that a freshwater fish could grow this large. But in the Fraser River system, in British Columbia Canada these monsters have been protected since the 1970′s. They were almost fished to extinction back then until the government did a great thing and protected them. There are stories from back in the day about how large they can grow, apparently up to about 18 feet, but the largest one caught recently was 12 feet, near Chilliwack, BC.
They are very long living, and slow growing, so it stands to reason that these fish are only starting to get large again after they were almost killed off in the 70s. The 12 footer was estimated to be about 100 years old, and it weighed over 1100 pounds.

A powerful Alzheimer’s fighter could be right in your mug.
A new study in the Journal of Biological Chemistry shows that an antioxidant called EGCG, which is found in green tea and red wine, is able to stop amyloid-beta proteins — known to play a role in Alzheimer’s — from attaching to and killing brain cells in a lab setting.
The study is based on the notion that amyloid proteins form ball-like clumps, which are not uniform in size. These amyloid clumps then bind to the outer proteins of brain cells and kill them. However, the researchers wanted to see if changing the shape of the amyloid clumps — by applying EGCG– altered their ability to bind to the brain cells.
