The phrase “pinup girl” often conjures up images of hourglass figures and vintage fashion. But how often are the pin-ups we see actually plus-size women?
Not often enough. That’s why we’re so excited that Hilda, originally drawn in the 1950s by illustrator Duane Bryers, resurfaced on the Internet this week.
According to the blog Messy Nessy Chic, Hilda is a vintage icon who was “one of history’s longest running calendar queens” alongside Marilyn Monroe and others.
“She’s a creation out of my head. I had various models over the years, but some of my best Hilda paintings I’ve ever done were done without a model,” Bryers said in an interview with illustrator Les Toil.

A Pennsylvania man has filed a class-action lawsuit against Walmart alleging the retailer overtaxed him by 21 cents for items purchased with a coupon, Consumerist reports.
According to a lawsuit filed in Allegheny County, Pa., Brian Farneth purchased two cans of $2.97 shaving cream at a Walmart with a “buy one, get one free” coupon in June. The cashier, Farneth says, correctly deducted the price of one can of shaving cream from the total, but failed to deduct the associated tax, causing him to lose out on 21 cents.
Farneth alleges that he could be one of many customers at Walmart’s 8,500 stores across the world that the retailer may be overcharging for coupon purchases.
“Walmart’s current systems, with respect to the collection and remittance of sales tax, are in compliance with Pennsylvania’s tax laws,” Walmart Spokesperson Dan Fogleman wrote in an email to The Huffington Post. “We have previously sought an opinion from the state which confirmed this.”

Yes, sunscreen is number one for protecting your skin, but there are other ways to prevent sun damage. Here are some surprising things you can do to double your defenses against skin cancer.
Fight Sun Damage From the Inside Out
Sunscreen is a no-brainer if you want to protect your skin from UV rays. But studies have linked some foods, drinks, and habits to skin-cancer prevention as well. You still need to wear SPF every day, but add these surprising sun shields to your routine, and you might reduce your risk of skin cancer by fighting sun damage from the inside out.

When Jaime Moore’s daughter, Emma, turned 5, the Texas mom and photographer set out to commemorate the occasion in pictures. Searching for inspiration online, however, she was dismayed to find the majority of girls at that age dressed up, unrealistically, as fairy-tale princesses. So Jaime decided to raise the bar.
Mom searched for better role models, and together with Emma selected five real women that a girl can actually aspire to be like. Then, they replicated iconic portraits of those figures — Susan B. Anthony, Coco Chanel, Amelia Earhart, Helen Keller and Jane Goodall.
The title of the series, “NOT just a girl,” is meant to be an inspirational message for young women seeking to realize their full potential — beyond vague dreams of Disney princesses.

Celebrities make more money than we simpletons do — that isn’t entirely new. But learning exactly how much they’re worth? Now, that’s sometimes hard to believe.
Take Julia Louis-Dreyfus, for example. She’s a gifted comedian, no doubt, who managed to break “The ‘Seinfeld’ Curse,” but did you know she’s worth a whopping $3 billion, thanks largely to family money?
And did you know Keanu Reeves, he of “Matrix” fame, is estimated to be worth more than Bruce Springsteen and Ozzy Osbourne combined?

Men going thin on top may be more likely to have heart problems than their friends with a full head of hair, according to researchers in Japan.
Their study of nearly 37,000 people, published in the online journal BMJ Open, said balding men were 32% more likely to have coronary heart disease.
However, the researchers said the risks were less than for smoking or obesity.
The British Heart Foundation said men should focus on their waistline, not their hairline.
A shifting hairline is a fact of life for many men. Half have thinning hair by their 50s and 80% have some hair loss by the age of 70.

Reusing everyday items can lead to a good deal of savings over time. Here, our experts discuss ways to repurpose common objects that are both useful in the kitchen and budget-friendly.
For instance, when you buy a bunch of oranges, think twice before tossing those mesh produce bags. With three of them you can make a handy and effective scrub sponge for free. First, cut off the tags and labels. Then, take a bag and tie a knot on one end. Next, stuff it with two more bags, and then knot the other end. You’ll have a great scrubber in seconds.
