The biggest entitlement legislation in a generation is causing barely a ripple in corporate America.
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act — otherwise known as Obamacare — is putting such a small dent in the profits of U.S. companies that many refer to its impact as “not material” or “not significant,” according to a Bloomberg review of conference-call transcripts and interviews with major U.S. employers.
That’s even after a provision went into effect this year requiring companies with 50 or more full-time workers to provide coverage, and after more workers are choosing to enroll in existing company coverage because of another requirement that all Americans get insured.

Scientists in London have developed an algorithm-based decoder system that enables wheelchair users to move around simply by looking to where they wish to travel. The researchers at Imperial College London say the system is inexpensive and easy to use and could transform the lives of people who are unable to use their limbs.
Algorithms working with inexpensive software could help quadriplegics steer wheelchairs simply by looking in their desired direction of travel. An Imperial College London team says their newly devised system can read eye movements to tell if a person is merely gazing or wants to move. Co-designer and student Kirubin Pillay says it’s simple to use.

Animated GIFs kind of come and go in popularity, but seem to be having a bit of a resurgence lately. GifMill is a free app for your iPhone or iPod touch that lets you take photos and create animated GIF images you can share with friends via Tumblr, Twitter, email or text message.
You can also use photos from your camera roll or even use short videos. Up to 100 stills can be used to create the GIF. Once the frames are selected you can control the frame rate and quality, and rearrange or delete frames from your sequence.

Writing software used to be so simple. A giant pain in the ass, mind you, but simple. You were a Microsoft developer, with binders full of Visual Studio CDs; you were a Java developer; you used the LAMP stack; or you worked with something proprietary from IBM or SAP or the like.
Nowadays, though, while the tools and technologies we use have improved enormously…imagine, God forbid, that you’re building some sort of web service. Should you use Ruby on Rails? Node.js? Python and Django? PHP and Drupal? .NET? Any of the panoply of Java servers? Something new and cool like Go or Scala? And how/where will you host your code? Amazon? Heroku? App Engine? Joyent? EngineYard? Force.com? How about your app? You’ll have an app, right? On which platforms? Native code? Hybrid HTML5? Cross-compiled with Xamarin? And then there’s your database…

Two years ago, Facebook’s security team began noticing a surge in a particular strain of computer virus. The malicious software stole credit card information and other personal data belonging to thousands of Facebook users and spammed their friends with links to rogue websites, creating a global network of infected PCs.At first, Facebook played defense, helping victims clean their computers and attempting to block each new strain of the malware known as “Yahos.” But the virus kept mutating to avoid detection. So Facebook’s researchers did something unusual for a business being hacked: They investigated the hackers themselves, placing the giant social network at the forefront of a more combative strategy in the war against cybercrime.

NEW YORK (AP) — The release of Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system is a week away, and consumers are in for a shock. Windows, used in one form or another for a generation, is getting a completely different look that will force users to learn new ways to get things done.
Microsoft is making a radical break with the past to stay relevant in a world where smartphones and tablets have eroded the three-decade dominance of the personal computer. Windows 8 is supposed to tie together Microsoft’s PC, tablet and phone software with one look. But judging by the reactions of some people who have tried the PC version, it’s a move that risks confusing and alienating customers.
