Passionate activists are using technology to make the world a safer, more equitable place — and a new video series shines a light on their powerful stories.
“Internet Without Borders” is a four-part series from Jigsaw, the tech incubator at Google’s parent company Alphabet, featuring interviews with activists and technologists who use digital tools to defend human rights in their countries.
Jigsaw, whose mission is to look at how technology can make people safer around the world, filmed the videos at the 2016 Oslo Freedom Forum last May. There, the company sought out people who are “courageously fighting for freedom in diverse communities around the world.”
The first two videos of the series launched on Jan. 19, featuring Afghan tech CEO Roya Mahboob and Egyptian activist and actor Omar Sharif Jr.
“I have a vision to bring equal access to education through technology for the women and girls in Afghanistan,” Mahboob says.

A man described as a disgruntled former colleague gunned down a reporter and cameraman on live television Wednesday morning in Virginia, then posted video of the deadly attack to social media before shooting himself, authorities said.
The suspect, described by the station that fired him as “an unhappy man,” turned the gun on himself hours later, according to federal officials. State police said the suspected gunman was in “very critical condition” but “has a pulse,” WDBJ7 reported.
The gruesome events began to unfold as WDBJ7 correspondent Alison Parker conducted an on-air interview at around 6:45 a.m. at a shopping center in Moneta, Virginia.

Hearing more chatter — either at home or at work, or both — about work/life balance?
You’re not alone.
While the concept of a balance between your work and your play has been around for decades, more companies today, especially startups, are putting work/life balance at the forefront of their recruiting.
As new policies enter the workplace, employees are also engineering their own methods to balance their careers and social lives.

An 11-year-old girl had been reaching out for help on a social media site before her suicidal grandfather killed her and her mother on Monday night.
Police say Honorario Yano, 78, shot the pair dead in Seattle before turning the gun on himself. KIRO identifies the victims as Yano’s daughter, Christine Dela Isla, 39, and 11-year-old granddaughter Anahlia Cowherd.
Cowherd had been complaining about her grandfather on her blog for some time. She claimed to be the victim of constant sexual abuse, and wrote one final panicked entry just hours before her death.

When Alan Villeda began smuggling people from Honduras to the United States in 1998, he could only communicate with customers via patchy phone calls. These days, he is a word-of-mouth success and new clients seek him out on Facebook.
Social media like Facebook and Skype are changing, and in some cases accelerating, the decades-old northward migration of Central Americans, U.S. and Honduran officials said, by providing crowd-sourced information on the risks and rewards of making the journey.
Images and testimonials posted by migrants who have made it to the United States help keep uprooted families closer together and drive business for e-commerce “coyotes” like Villeda, who is based in the city of La Ceiba on Honduras’ Caribbean coast.

Facebook remains the most popular social media platform among marketers, but less than half agree that it’s actually effective, according to Social Media Examiner’s 2014 Social Media Marketing Industry Report.
Nearly 100% of professionals polled reported using the network in business-to-consumer marketing while 89% said they used it to communicate with other businesses. Despite these astronomical numbers, 57% of the marketers either don’t think their Facebook posts make a difference or aren’t sure.
Twitter came in as the second most popular site — 83% of marketers reported using the microblogging service — while LinkedIn took third. Only 28% take advantage of Instagram while a mere 1% have incorporated Snapchat into their work. The top six platforms have stayed relatively steady since 2012.

The rumors and feature teases are true: New Twitter profiles are here, with a brand-new, yet oddly familiar, look. The new design is rolling out slowly, unless you’re a celebrity or a new user. And it may represent a real turning point.
Like many people who live on Twitter, I don’t look at my own profile page very often. I spend most of my time on the Twitter.com homepage to see tweets from all the accounts I follow, and my Notifications page to track replies and mentions of my handle. I last managed my Twitter profile ages ago.
However, I look at other users’ profile pages fairly often. It’s where I learn about who they are through their profile picture and their brief description of themselves, which may include details like job, location and a link for more information. In other words, profile pages are important, especially for brands, celebrities and new users.

Frequency of the word “selfie” in the English language has increased by 17,000 percent in the past year, according to Oxford Dictionaries, which crowned the narcissistic love child of cellphone cameras and social media “Word of the Year 2013” on Monday. But it’s the rising frequency of selfies snapped from the wheel that concerns another venerable organization, AAA, the group formerly known as the American Automobile Association.
“Selfies are a relatively new phenomenon so we don’t have [traffic accident] data specifically related to selfies, but we do know any use of cellphones increases crash risk,” Sharon Gilmartin, a AAA analyst for traffic safety policy, told NBC News.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg reaped a gain of nearly $2.3 billion last year when he exercised 60 million stock options just before the online social networking leader’s initial public offering.
The windfall detailed in regulatory documents filed Friday saddled Zuckerberg, 28, with a massive tax bill. He raised the money to pay it by selling 30.2 million Facebook Inc. shares for $38 apiece, or $1.1 billion, in the IPO.
Facebook’s stock hasn’t closed above $38 since the IPO was completed last May. The shares gained 71 cents Friday to close at $26.85.
