For one year’s work as a full-time music teacher in New York City more than a decade ago, Aryeh Eller has collected almost $1 million in salary from the city.
Eller, 46 years old, was removed from his post at Hillcrest High School in Queens in 1999 and confessed to numerous allegations that he sexually harassed female students, the New York Post reports.
But like dozens of other New York City “rubber room” cases, an independent arbitrator determined that Eller couldn’t be fired because the city failed to inform the teacher of his rights. But the city’s Department of Education, deeming Eller unfit for the classroom but also unable to fire him, placed him in a holding room and reassigned him to administrative duty.

This gang no longer has street cred — because the gang is off the streets.
The Canadian RCMP dismantled the Winnipeg chapter of the Rock Machine motorcycle gang in a raid on Wednesday, the Brandon Sun reports. Police arrested 11 people and seized some 1,800 pills of synthetic ecstasy, cocaine, marijuana, pipe bombs, gang clothing and guns.
The RCMP raided two homes Wednesday morning and arrested the suspects. One of the homes, on Wall Street in Winnipeg, had to be closed for several hours because explosives were found there, the CBC reports.

Search engines have long memories. I think about this whenever I read new coverage of some immoral, misanthropic or illegal act. The kids who tweeted racist statements about Obama on Election Day, the college student whose secret videotaping of his gay roommate helped lead to the young man’s suicide, the catfishing of Manti T’eo. Years from now it’s possible, even likely, that when the perpetrators’ names are Googled, these histories will be what surfaces first for them. An employer, a girlfriend or boyfriend, or a neighbor will find out about what they once did years ago. Whatever the context, their past will be very hard to escape.

COPD is often misunderstood because symptoms can be caused by three different diseases. Separating fact from fiction will help you live better and better manage COPD.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can be confusing because it isn’t a single condition — it actually refers to a group of lung diseases that makes it difficult to breathe.
“COPD is an umbrella term for three different diseases,” says Timothy R. Wu, MD, director of the COPD Center at Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass. Emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and chronic asthmatic bronchitis can all cause COPD symptoms. What these diseases have in common is obstructed air flow through the lungs.

Bank regulators got a sense Thursday of how their lives will be slightly different now that Elizabeth Warren sits on a Senate committee overseeing their agencies.
At her first Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee hearing, Warren questioned top regulators from the alphabet soup that is the nation’s financial regulatory structure: the FDIC, SEC, OCC, CFPB, CFTC, Fed and Treasury.
The Democratic senator from Massachusetts had a straightforward question for them: When was the last time you took a Wall Street bank to trial? It was a harder question than it seemed.

A landmark case in China granted Kim Lee a divorce from her husband on the grounds of domestic abuse — a topic seldom discussed there. Kim Lee joined HuffPost Live from Beijing, China, and spoke to host Abby Huntsman about the violence she was subjected to by her Chinese husband, Li Yang.
“He sat on my back and hit my head into the floor 10 or 12 times,” said Lee, “It was extreme violence. Any type of violence is unacceptable, but it was extreme.” Instead of denying the violence, her husband spoke publicly about the abuse in interviews. Lee quoted that “his exact words were ‘yes, I beat her sometimes but I never thought she’d go to the police, because that’s not what Chinese women do.'”

Having run out of patience for Congress to act on a cybersecurity bill, President Obama has decided to take matters into his own hands.
Obama signed an executive order on Tuesday addressing the country’s most basic cybersecurity needs and highlighted the effort in his State of the Union address.
“We cannot look back years from now and wonder why we did nothing in the face of real threats to our security and our economy,” Obama said.

News of Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation was greeted with almost immediate speculation when it was announced Monday. Why had the pontiff decided to do what no one in nearly 600 years had felt necessary?
Now, Benedict’s brother Georg Ratzinger, 89, is beginning to shed some light on what may have motivated his famous younger brother.
Speaking with reporters in Germany on Tuesday, Ratzinger said that his brother’s eight years at the helm of the Catholic Church had been difficult ones, both physically and mentally, NBC News reports.

Pope Benedict XVI announced Monday that he would resign on Feb. 28 because he was simply too infirm to carry on — the first pontiff to do so in nearly 600 years. The decision sets the stage for a conclave to elect a new pope before the end of March.
The 85-year-old pope announced his decision in Latin during a meeting of Vatican cardinals on Monday morning.
He emphasized that carrying out the duties of being pope — the leader of more than a billion Roman Catholics worldwide — requires “both strength of mind and body.”
