A man apparently committed suicide just moments after he was convicted of sodomizing a 14-year-old girl.
A coroner’s report and witness accounts indicate that Steve Parsons, 48, of Maryville, Mo., swallowed a cyanide pill inside the courtroom on Thursday just after a jury pronounced him guilty of statutory sodomy, according to KCTV. Minutes later, he was “convulsing” and was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
“It’s not common to see someone just fall over dead in the courtroom even though they’ve just been found guilty of a crime,” Sheriff Darrin White, who was in the courtroom when the verdict was read, told Fox4KC.
Parsons placed an overnight delivery of cyanide on June 25, authorities told the St Joseph Post.

Google introduced the Nexus Q close to a year ago. It was an intriguing device with a standout design, but its high asking price and limited functionality meant it wasn’t long before the Q was pulled from virtual shelves. A peculiar product and, perhaps, a cautionary tale, but the sphere was also interesting for another reason: it was manufactured in the USA. That credential is a rarity, and in the consumer technology business, almost an anomaly. It’s fast becoming a lot more common, however, with some big players setting up a stateside manufacturing presence. Awareness of the potential advantages of doing so can only increase, and serve to debunk the myth that future technology can’t be built on American soil.
After flirting with the idea, then committing to build a computer in the US, Apple chose its redesigned Mac Pro for assembly in the states. Lenovo has a PC production facility up and running in North Carolina, and Google-owned Motorola will be putting together its next flagship, the Moto X, in Texas. Time will tell whether other companies will follow suit, and to what extent, but if the arguments in favor of US manufacturing hold up, we could see the trend sustained in the long term, leading to many more gadgets bearing a US birthmark.

It’s a tough call, whose needs are more important: the terminal patient or the people they leave behind.
I’m a big fan of Nora Ephron. I didn’t know her personally, but I often felt like she knew me. So much of what she wrote felt like something I could have said … if I was as witty and wise and as good with words as she was.
I love just about everything she said and wrote, but one of my favorite favorites is the chapter “On Maintenance,” from her book “I Feel Bad About My Neck,” where she writes about the increasing amount of time a woman has to spend on maintaining her looks as she ages. She calls it “Status Quo Maintenance” — what you do just to stay more or less even: the routine, everyday things required just to keep you from looking like someone who no longer cares.
Lots of women instantly identify with this, but most of us can’t express it quite so well. Nora died last June, and I miss her humor and spot-on assessments of human behavior. Yet she remains someone I’m completely fascinated with. She died of pneumonia, brought on by acute myeloid leukemia, something she fiercely fought for more than five years.

A 16-year-old gang member was sentenced Friday to 90 years to life in prison for killing a 1-year-old boy who was shot as the toddler lay in his father’s arms on a South Los Angeles street.
Donald Ray Dokins was convicted in April of first-degree murder and attempted murder in the June 2012 shooting. Jurors also found true gun and gang allegations against Dokins, who was 15 at the time of the crime but was charged as an adult, City News Service reported.
During Friday’s sentencing hearing, Compton Superior Court Judge Patrick Connolly chastised Dokins, asking him: “Why did you do this? Were you fighting an imaginary war?”
Prosecutors said Dokins rode up on a bicycle and opened fire on a crowd standing outside a South LA home.

At least $15 million was stolen via online infiltration of 15 financial companies — including JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Citigroup (C), E*Trade (ETFC), PayPal (EBAY), TIAA-CREF, and TD Ameritrade (AMTD) — overly a nearly two-year period. The perpetrators of the scheme were a group of hackers and identity thieves led by two Ukrainian nationals, according to authorities. Eight men have been charged, and four are in custody, the LA Times reports.
“Cybercriminals penetrated some of our most trusted financial institutions as part of a global scheme that stole money and identities from people in the United States,” said New Jersey U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman in a statement. The criminal complaint against the men alleges that they moved money from online accounts onto prepaid debit cards, then used the cards to withdraw cash from ATMs or make purchases throughout the United States. According to the LA Times, “Much of the money that was cashed out was wired to the two leaders.”

For years, the resting place of American hero Amelia Earhart has been considered among aviation’s greatest mysteries. But now, pictures of the island she may have lived on before her death could shed new light on her last flight.
Taken on Dec. 1, 1938, more than a year after Earhart’s disappearance, the aerial photos of Gardner Island (now known as Nikumaroro Island) may provide evidence of Earhart’s camp or crash site, according to Discovery News.
The photos surfaced earlier this month in a tin box in the New Zealand Air Force Museum, where they had apparently lain forgotten for decades, according to New Zealand news site Stuff.co.nz.
Ric Gillespie, executive director of The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR), said he and a team will be flying to New Zealand in July to examine the photos, which appear to include visible footprints that may have belonged to Earhart or her navigator, Fred Noonan, ABC reports.

Hours before dying in a fiery car crash, award-winning journalist Michael Hastings sent an email to his colleagues, warning that federal authorities were interviewing his friends and that he needed to go “off the rada[r]” for a bit.
The email was sent around 1 p.m. on Monday, June 17. At 4:20 a.m. the following morning, Hastings died when his Mercedes, traveling at high speeds, smashed into a tree and caught on fire. He was 33.
Hastings sent the email to staff at BuzzFeed, where he was employed, but also blind-copied a friend, Staff Sgt. Joseph Biggs, on the message. Biggs, who Hastings met in 2008 when he was embedded in his unit in Afghanistan, forwarded the email to KTLA, who posted it online on Saturday.

At age 4, Tan Le and her family left Vietnam as refugees, venturing out to sea without a clear plan. Her upbringing ultimately inspired her to think big, and now she is making a major difference in the world.
“Anything, even death, would be better than life in that environment,” the CEO of Emotiv Lifesciences describes of the once war-torn country. Upon immigrating to Australia, Le’s parents impressed upon her and her siblings to “work hard, study hard, get good marks at school and then do something worthwhile with our lives.”
Initially, Le began with the simple desire to be able to move something with her mind. That idea led to the creation of the Emotiv EPOC, a headset that “picks up electrical fluctuations that result from neurons firing inside your brain.” With a set of 14 sensors, the device can detect the user’s thoughts, feelings and expressions in real time.

SUMMARY: A healthy baby boy was born using a new method of in vitro fertilization (IVF). Doctors hope the new procedure will reduce the risk of a rare but potentially fatal complication of traditional IVF.
Doctors in the United Kingdom hope they have found a way to make in vitro fertilization safer for women. They’ve discovered a naturally-derived hormone called “kisspeptin” that stimulates a woman’s ovaries for egg production, but the new IVF treatment is gentler than traditional methods. The procedure has already produced a healthy baby boy for a very happy family.

The horrifying ordeal of Natascha Kampusch lasted for more than eight years, but the Austrian woman still managed to preserve her inner strength and take the opportunity to escape. Wolfgang Priklopil snatched Natascha off the street in 1998 when she was just 10 years old, keeping her in a locked cellar and abusing her for almost a decade. In 2006, Priklopil had Kampusch out in the garden cleaning and vacuuming his car. When his mobile phone rang and he turned away to take the call, she ran away as fast as she could, eventually getting a neighbor to call the police. Priklopil committed suicide by jumping in front of a train rather than be taken into custody.
