In many ways, 2011 was a year when the people finally had their say. From Cairo to Wall Street, throngs of frustrated yet invigorated civilians poured into the streets and took their societies’ futures into their own hands. Though unpredictable, these movements grabbed the world’s attention, and helped remind us that great change comes most often through the courageous actions of ordinary people.
In 2012, we have both an opportunity and a responsibility to learn the necessary lessons from these movements, and to apply them to some of the world’s most pressing problems. There is no better place to start than the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, where for too long global attention has been exclusively focused on obstacles at the top, rather than breakthroughs at the bottom.

The largest ancient Egyptian sarcophagus has been identified in a tomb in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings, say archaeologists who are re-assembling the giant box that was reduced to fragments more than 3,000 years ago.
Made of red granite, the royal sarcophagus was built for Merneptah, an Egyptian pharaoh who lived more than 3,200 years ago. A warrior king, he defeated the Libyans and a group called the “Sea Peoples” in a great battle.
.
The mummy of Merneptah was encased in a series of four sarcophagi,
set one within the other. After his tomb was robbed, more than 3,000
years ago, he was reburied elsewhere and his two outer sarcophagi
boxes were broken up.

Yasser Arafat’s political heirs on Tuesday opened his grave and foreign experts took samples of the iconic Palestinian leader’s remains as part of a long-shot attempt — eight years after his mysterious death — to determine whether he was poisoned.
Arafat died in November 2004 at a French military hospital, a month after suddenly falling ill at his West Bank compound, at the time besieged by Israeli troops.

SAN FRANCISCO — Ötzi the Iceman, an astonishingly well-preserved Neolithic mummy found in the Italian Alps in 1991, was a native of Italian Alps, not a first-generation émigré from Sardinia, new research shows. And genetically, he looked a lot like other Stone Age farmers throughout Europe.
The new findings, reported Thursday (Nov. 8) here at the American Society of Human Genetics conference, support the theory that farmers, and not just the technology of farming, spread during prehistoric times from the Middle East all the way to Finland.

JERUSALEM — A concerted effort of millions of attempts to cripple Israeli websites during the Gaza conflict has failed, Israel’s finance minister said Monday, claiming that the only site that was successfully hacked was back up within minutes.
Cyber security experts said that such hacking attempts have become a new aspect of modern-day warfare and states have to invest in fortifying their virtual defenses on a battleground with vague terrain.

With East Africa facing its worst drought in 60 years, affecting more than 11 million people, the United Nations has declared a famine in the region for the first time in a generation. Overcrowded refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia are receiving some 3,000 new refugees every day, as families flee from famine-stricken and war-torn areas. The meager food and water that used to support millions in the Horn of Africa is disappearing rapidly, and families strong enough to flee for survival must travel up to a hundred miles, often on foot, hoping to make it to a refugee center, seeking food and aid. Many do not survive the trip. Officials warn that 800,000 children could die of malnutrition across the East African nations of Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Kenya. Aid agencies are frustrated by many crippling situations: the slow response of Western governments, local governments and terrorist groups blocking access, terrorist and bandit attacks, and anti-terrorism laws that restrict who the aid groups can deal with — not to mention the massive scale of the current crisis. Below are a few images from the past several weeks in East Africa.

9 Those killed by the sword are better off
than those who die of hunger.
Starving, they waste away
for lack of food from the fields.

Millions of East Africans are suffering and need all the help they can get.
The US is also, suffering a drought, lets hope it doesn’t get this bad.
