Microsoft’s getting quite good at design moonshots, creating product silhouettes that challenge our notions of what computing should look like. The large, yet astonishingly thin, Surface Studio is a perfect reflection of that still somewhat new skill.
As I looked over that all-in-one Windows 10 computer and a slightly updated Surface Book beside it in Microsoft’s pop-up product experience room adjacent to the hall where Microsoft Device lead Panos Panay had just introduced the new hardware, I realized I had myriad questions about both, but mostly about the Surface Studio.
I glanced away from the 28-inch glowing Studio display and spotted a familiar face. Ralf Groene, Microsoft’s head of industrial design, was standing alone, staring almost wistfully into space. The last time I’d seen Groene was almost a year ago and he was showing me two stuck-together pieces of black cardboard, the rough-hewn seedling for the product idea that would become the Surface Book.

At first glance, Microsoft’s choice to introduce both regular and XL-sized Windows 10 phones on Tuesday might look like a desperate attempt to keep up with Apple and Google. But a closer inspection of what these new phones actually can do, however, will tell you that Microsoft is in position to take the lead in next-generation handsets.
The reason: Windows 10 Continuum.
Continuum turns your Windows 10 smartphone into a full-on computer you carry around in your pocket. Plug your handset into the $99 Display Box — a hockey puck-sized hub with USB ports and an HDMI screen output — and all the apps and documents on your phone will scale up to PC-size, ready to be manipulated using a full-sized keyboard and mouse.
The caveats: Continuum will only be coming to Microsoft’s new Lumia phones (set to be released this November), not any current Windows phones. And this trick will only work with Windows 10 “universal apps” (more on those in a bit).

It took Microsoft three tries, but it finally scored a hit with the Surface Pro 3, which the company touts as the “tablet that can replace your laptop.”
Now, three former Google engineers are running with that idea in the Android arena.
The Remix tablet, unveiled on Wednesday at CES 2015 by Chinese company Jide, looks a lot like one of Microsoft’s Surface devices. It’s about the same size with an 11.6-inch screen, and the edge has a similar trapezoid shape that makes it suited to sitting at an angle. The Remix also has both a kickstand and a magnetically attached keyboard — two Surface hallmarks. Even the volume control feels the same.

The first Halo game for the next-generation Xbox One will come out in fall 2015, Microsoft announced Friday morning.
Halo 5: Guardians is a larger effort than Halo 4, the game’s developer wrote in an Xbox Wire blog post.
“That applies to the content and scope of the game, as well as the technology in what’s now a brand new and more powerful engine,” wrote Bonnie Ross, general manager of 343 Industries.

We are confident that Bill Gates is a brilliant guy, but he just admitted to something that the entire world has known for decades.
Forcing early computer owners to simultaneously press the difficult key combination of Control-Alt-Delete to log on to their machines was a mistake, the Microsoft co-founder said in an interview at a Harvard fundraising campaign posted on YouTube.
“We could have had a single button, but the guy who did the IBM keyboard design didn’t want to give us our single button,” Gates said, explaining that the tricky keyboard maneuver was made to ensure that other apps could not fake the login and steal passwords.
“It was a mistake,” Gates added.

Microsoft typically releases new builds of Windows to its developers well before the rest of us can get our hands on it, and that RTM (released to manufacturing) version is usually the final code. Apparently this time, Microsoft is not sending out their final bits until a bit later.
I had heard months ago from my sources that Microsoft’s plan with Windows 8.1 was to shorten the usual gap between RTM and general availability. The thinking, supposedly, was to provide existing Windows 8.1 users with the final bits very shortly after they RTM’d — all part of Microsoft’s more rapid delivery cadence goal. Even if Microsoft waits until mid-October to release the Windows 8.1 RTM bits, the company still will have managed to deliver to customers a new release of Windows within almost exactly a year — instead of three years after the previous release, as was the length of time between the release of Windows 7 and Windows 8.

A former Microsoft executive plans to create the first U.S. national marijuana brand, with cannabis he hopes to eventually import legally from Mexico, and said he was kicking off his business by acquiring medical pot dispensaries in three U.S. states.
Jamen Shively, a former Microsoft corporate strategy manager, said he envisions his Seattle-based enterprise becoming the leader in both recreational and medical cannabis – much like Starbucks is the dominant name in coffee, he said.
Shively, 45, whose six years at Microsoft ended in 2009, said he was soliciting investors for $10 million in start-up money.
The use, sale and possession of marijuana remains illegal in the United States under federal law. Two U.S. states have, however, legalized recreational marijuana use and are among 18 states that allow it for medical use.
“It’s a giant market in search of a brand,” Shively said of the marijuana industry. “We would be happy if we get 40 percent of it worldwide.”

The next volley of downloadable content for the Angry Birds Trilogy – the retail released and priced Xbox 360 and PS3 version of the mobile best-seller – have been revealed. The ‘Fowl Tempered’ DLC pack includes 135 new levels culled from classic franchise episodes, such as Back to School and Haunted Hogs from Angry Birds Seasons, for $5 (400MS Points). The farm fresh content is available now for both platforms.
Fowl Tempered also features the pink bird Stella, whose special ability captures objects and enemies before floating floating to the sky and dropping them onto the ground below violently.

Writing software used to be so simple. A giant pain in the ass, mind you, but simple. You were a Microsoft developer, with binders full of Visual Studio CDs; you were a Java developer; you used the LAMP stack; or you worked with something proprietary from IBM or SAP or the like.
Nowadays, though, while the tools and technologies we use have improved enormously…imagine, God forbid, that you’re building some sort of web service. Should you use Ruby on Rails? Node.js? Python and Django? PHP and Drupal? .NET? Any of the panoply of Java servers? Something new and cool like Go or Scala? And how/where will you host your code? Amazon? Heroku? App Engine? Joyent? EngineYard? Force.com? How about your app? You’ll have an app, right? On which platforms? Native code? Hybrid HTML5? Cross-compiled with Xamarin? And then there’s your database…
