Day 10 of Jodi Arias’ first-degree murder trial in Phoenix, Ariz., highlighted some of the defendant’s sexual preferences and a boob job she got prior to meeting the man she is accused of killing.
Testimony regarding Arias’ sex life and breast surgery was delivered by her ex-boyfriend, Darryl Brewer, a 52-year-old divorcee with a teenage son. Brewer testified he met Arias in 2001, when she was about 22, and dated her for about four years. They were in love, he said.
Maricopa County prosecutor Juan Martinez asked Brewer whether he had told investigators that Arias “was pretty aggressive during sex.” Brewer said he didn’t recall the statement, but acknowledged having anal sex with Arias when they were dating. He said he couldn’t remember how many times they did so.

The first woman scheduled to be executed in the U.S. since 2010 won a reprieve Tuesday, mere hours before she was scheduled to be taken to the Texas death chamber.
State District Judge Larry Mitchell, in Dallas, rescheduled Kimberly McCarthy’s punishment for April 3 so lawyers for the former nursing home therapist could have more time to pursue an appeal focused on whether her predominantly white jury was improperly selected on the basis of race. McCarthy is black.

Power. It’s that intangible thing that so many people strive for. For some people, feeling a sense of control — over themselves, others, situations or all of the above — is a natural thing. For others, it doesn’t come as easy.
In her TEDTalk (above), social psychologist Amy Cuddy shares an easy way that anyone can change not only others’ perceptions of them, but the way they feel about themselves — spending two minutes “power posing” with their arms or elbows out, their chin lifted and their posture expansive. Cuddy’s research, done in collaboration with Dana Carney, has shown that adopting the body language associated with dominance for just 120 seconds is enough to create a 20 percent increase in testosterone and a 25 percent decrease in the stress hormone cortisol. In other words, adopting these postures makes a person feel more powerful.

A fast-moving fire roared through a crowded, windowless nightclub in southern Brazil early Sunday, filling the air in seconds with flames and a thick, toxic smoke that killed more than 230 panicked party goers, many of whom were caught in a stampede to escape.
Inspectors believe the blaze began when a band’s small pyrotechnics show ignited foam sound insulating material on the ceiling, releasing a putrid haze that caused scores of university students to choke to death. Most victims died from smoke inhalation rather than burns in what appeared to be the world’s deadliest nightclub fire in more than a decade.

I’m a mathematician and am constantly amazed that the world around us can be described mathematically. All it takes is a combination of a handful of simple mathematical concepts. I’m insatiably curious, and I want to understand how things fit together, so, I get involved in many kinds of scientific problems — everything from the changing statistics of extreme rainfall, to the behavior of life at the scale of molecules, to analyzing voice and speech recordings for forensics. But there’s one project, on Parkinson’s disease that has occupied me for the last seven years. I fell into it almost by accident.

Like many large companies, MusclePharm has seen its share of both positive and negative press. Over the past two years the nutritional supplements manufacturer has battled lawsuits alleging price discrimination, environmental violations and patent infringement — all while bringing home boatloads of best-product awards and celebrity athlete endorsements. In short, it’s a company whose popularity has so far managed to drown out the cries of naysayers.

Accidental shootings at gun shows in North Carolina, Indiana and Ohio left five people injured Saturday, the same day that thousands of gun advocates gathered peacefully at state capitals around the U.S. to rally against stricter firearm limits.
At the Dixie Gun and Knife Show in Raleigh, a 12-gauge shotgun discharged as its owner unzipped its case for a law enforcement officer to check at a security entrance, injuring three people, state Agriculture Department spokesman Brian Long said.

A harrowing account of one group of Algerian hostages’ desperate flight for freedom credited an unusual gadget for helping to save their lives.
Liviu Floria, a Romanian gas worker, fled the scene of the hostage crisis at the Tiguentourine plant last week, following two days of hiding from the terrorists on the plant grounds, The New York Times reports.
Floria said he and seven others climbed a fence and escaped into the desert, navigating for miles across unfamiliar terrain using only a distant light and the compass application on Floria.

The world got its first inkling of the quick wit that would make Apple’s Siri an icon during a packed press conference held before an auditorium of tech elite.
“Who are you?” an Apple executive asked the assistant.
“I am a humble personal assistant,” Siri answered to appreciative laughter.
More like humbled personal assistant. That press conference was actually Siri’s second coming-out party. When the virtual assistant first launched in early 2010, it was a standalone iPhone app called Siri created by a 24-person startup with the same name, a company Apple would later acquire.
