On August 1, 1966, Charles Whitman murdered his mother and his wife before traveling to the campus of the University of Texas, climbing inside the tower, and killing fourteen others. He was dubbed the infamous UT sniper, but his story involves much more than Marine Corps training and a proclivity for violence. In fact, Whitman complained of headaches and an altered mental state in the days and weeks leading up to the killings. His own suicide note read that “I do not really understand myself these days. I am supposed to be an average reasonable and intelligent young man. However, lately (I cannot recall when it started) I have been a victim of many unusual and irrational thoughts.”

We’ve just come one step closer to a fully-operational Death Star.
Scientists at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California have fired the most powerful laser shot in the history of the world, setting the record with 1.875 MJ of energy. The historic March 15 firing was just 23 billionths of a second long, but generated 411 trillion watts of peak power.

Sometimes the psychometer just writes itself. Last week saw all kinds of erratic behavior, from Michael Bay taking a break from his war on filmmaking to take on the entire Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle nation, to Geraldo Rivera blaming the death of a teenager on a fashion choice. All in all, it was certainly a week chock-full of absurdities and outrages.
