If you haven’t already heard about something called the microbiome, you probably will soon. The human microbiome has become one of the hottest areas of medical research, and findings could lead to a revolution in human health. For people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), the research could hold the key to future treatment and even prevention.
“The human microbiome is all the microbes that normally live inside the human digestive system,” said Keith Sultan, MD, an assistant professor at Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine and a gastroenterologist at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y. “For doctors who treat IBD, the big interest is in bacteria that live inside the colon and small intestine. These bacteria may be the key to controlling IBD.”
Everyone has trillions of microbes living inside their digestive tract. These microbes, collectively known as the microbiome, help the body digest food, produce vitamins, prevent digestive tract infections, and control the immune system. Research is showing that a healthy balance of these microbes is essential for maintaining good health.

Girls who grow up eating PB&Js could be doing their breast health a favor.
Researchers from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School found an association between regularly eating peanut butter and having a lower risk of developing benign breast disease in early adulthood. Benign breast disease is noncancerous, and occurs when there are changes to the breast or an injury or infection leads to lumps in the breast tissue. The research team did not investigate a link between peanut butter and malignant breast lumps or cancer.
Other sources of vegetable fats and proteins — such as soybeans, beans and lentils — could also have the same effect, but researchers noted that the data on these particular foods in the study was not as abundant as data on peanut butter.
It’s important to note that the study only showed an association between peanut butter consumption and breast disease, and doesn’t show that peanut butter can definitively prevent breast disease.

Police say a Florida man strangled and ran her over a 14-year-old with an SUV when she refused to have sex with him.
Adrian Mendez, 21, was arrested Monday in his home in Marion County, the Ocala Post reports. The girl was found lying on the side of the road Sunday evening with neck injuries and crushed legs and hips.
Her injuries were life-threatening, Click Orlando reported, but she is now in stable condition.
She told police that around 7 p.m., Mendez offered her $200 to have sex with him. When she refused, she says he pulled her by the hair into his SUV and choked her until she passed out.

A homemade drug that causes severe damage to the flesh of those who use it has reportedly shown up in the U.S.
Previously reported in Russia, Krokodil, a disfiguring and potentially lethal mixture of codeine and hydrocarbons such as oil, paint thinner, gasoline or alcohol, has made its way to Arizona.
According to doctors at Banner Poison Control Center, two cases of the drug have been reported in the state in the past week.
“As far as I know, these are the first cases in the United States that are reported… We’re extremely frightened,” Dr. Frank LoVecchio, the co-medical director at the center, told KLTV.
Users filter and boil the drug before injecting it. Although LoVecchio said users believe the process removes the impurities, they are wrong.
Once injected, the drug causes damage to blood vessels and tissue, causing flesh to rot from the inside out. The horrific sores that some users develop resemble crocodile skin, which lends the street drug its name. The average life expectancy of a krokodil user is about three years, according to KSAZ.

Future Mars explorers may be able to get all the water they need out of the red dirt beneath their boots, a new study suggests.
NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity has found that surface soil on the Red Planet contains about 2 percent water by weight. That means astronaut pioneers could extract roughly 2 pints (1 liter) of water out of every cubic foot (0.03 cubic meters) of Martian dirt they dig up, said study lead author Laurie Leshin, of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y.
“For me, that was a big ‘wow’ moment,” Leshin told SPACE.com. “I was really happy when we saw that there’s easily accessible water here in the dirt beneath your feet. And it’s probably true anywhere you go on Mars.”

Could your brain keep on living even after your body dies? Sounds like science fiction, but celebrated theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking recently suggested that technology could make it possible.
“I think the brain is like a program in the mind, which is like a computer,” Hawking said last week during an appearance at the Cambridge Film Festival, The Telegraph reported. “So it’s theoretically possible to copy the brain on to a computer and so provide a form of life after death.”
He acknowledged that such a feat lies “beyond our present capabilities,” adding that “the conventional afterlife is a fairy tale for people afraid of the dark.”
Hawking, 71, made the remarks in conjunction with the premiere of a new documentary about his life.

Artist and therapy student Anna and her friends marked a birthday in New York recently with a familiar ritual: They pumped up the electronic music, danced, and celebrated with a special guest called Molly.

“It was a group of about 12 people at someone’s house and we were all just celebrating,” Anna recalled. “Somebody had it and, and you know, it was a pretty electronic music kind of crowd.”
Molly, an illegal stimulant frequently sold in pill form, has become prominent in the electronic music scene over the past decade, said Anna, 26, who did not want to give her full name because she is in school and “counseling people to be healthy.”
Molly is the street name for a drug that is pushed as the pure powder form of a banned substance known as MDMA, the main chemical in ecstasy. In the last five years, Molly has made its way into popular culture, helped by references to it made by entertainers such as Madonna, Miley Cyrus and Kanye West.
