Historically, Apple hasn’t been one to offer sneak peeks of anything. That changed today with the next-generation Mac Pro — likely a function of the fact that teasing such a machine couldn’t possibly weaken sales of a desktop that hasn’t been updated in a technological eternity. Waiting just outside of the concourse walls was one of the prototype cylinders, and it’s perhaps the sexiest workstation this world has ever seen. All we know for now is that it’ll make its debut “later this year,” boasting four USB sockets, six Thunderbolt 2 ports, a full-size HDMI connector, a 3.5mm headphone port and a pair of gigabit Ethernet ports. And yes, it’s almost certainly a fingerprint magnet.

Conclusion: We like it
Nokia’s latest PureView-packing smartphone looks a lot like the previous Lumia 920, but it’s slimmer and provides a much-improved PureView experience. However, its high price is going to make it enticing only to those who need the best smartphone camera on the market. The Lumia 1020 keeps the same Lumia styling we’ve come to know and love, but even with the smallish bump on the back for the camera it still comes in lighter than the Lumia 920, leading phoneArena to say they’re “surprised how light it really is.”

Everything you want in a luxury gaming laptop–almost.
PC makers aren’t known to swing for the fences when they build new laptops. The heart of their business isn’t about making the best laptop they possibly can. It’s about checking the right boxes, hitting the right price points and staking out a good spot on the shelves at Best Buy. You’ll find plenty of good enough Windows-based laptops these days, but if you’re willing to pay for a laptop in pursuit of perfection–well, there’s a reason Apple dominates the premium PC market.
Razer, however, is in an unusual position. The company’s bread and butter isn’t laptops and desktops, but peripherals like mouses and keyboards, specifically aimed at PC gamers. Razer is unencumbered by the need to sell PCs to the masses. Instead, every so often when the company decides to build a PC, it can swing for the fences.
The $1,800-and-up Razer Blade is the company’s latest effort, and a valiant one. It’s a 14-inch laptop built for gaming, but you might not know it from appearances alone. At 0.66 inches thick and cut from a slab of aluminum, the Razer Blade takes some design cues from Apple, but with plenty of its own flourishes. The case is a deep black, with a slight downward contour where Razer’s bright green hydra logo resides. Beneath the razor-thin lid lies a backlit keyboard–the same shade of green, of course–flanked by some surprisingly loud stereo speakers.

Android on a point-and-shoot? Last year we learned that it could be done. But with some features that duplicate the functionality of a smartphone without an ability to make calls, Samsung’s Galaxy Camera was a confusing mix of form and function. It was very much a first-generation device, and while they may have regretted it later, some curious early adopters did drop $500 for the soon-to-be-obsolete hybrid. The cumbersome compact, with its massive 21x lens and power-hungry 4.8-inch touchscreen, may not have won over the photography community, but Samsung’s 2013 approach has a much better chance at success.

Google introduced the Nexus Q close to a year ago. It was an intriguing device with a standout design, but its high asking price and limited functionality meant it wasn’t long before the Q was pulled from virtual shelves. A peculiar product and, perhaps, a cautionary tale, but the sphere was also interesting for another reason: it was manufactured in the USA. That credential is a rarity, and in the consumer technology business, almost an anomaly. It’s fast becoming a lot more common, however, with some big players setting up a stateside manufacturing presence. Awareness of the potential advantages of doing so can only increase, and serve to debunk the myth that future technology can’t be built on American soil.
After flirting with the idea, then committing to build a computer in the US, Apple chose its redesigned Mac Pro for assembly in the states. Lenovo has a PC production facility up and running in North Carolina, and Google-owned Motorola will be putting together its next flagship, the Moto X, in Texas. Time will tell whether other companies will follow suit, and to what extent, but if the arguments in favor of US manufacturing hold up, we could see the trend sustained in the long term, leading to many more gadgets bearing a US birthmark.
