10,000 Walrus Converge On Alaskan Beach As Arctic Sea Ice Declines

An estimated 10,000 walrus unable to find sea ice over shallow Arctic Ocean water have come ashore on Alaska’s northwest coast.

Scientists with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Friday photographed walrus packed onto a beach on a barrier island near Point Lay, an Inupiat Eskimo village 300 miles southwest of Barrow and 700 miles northwest of Anchorage.

The walrus have been coming to shore since mid-September. The large herd was spotted during NOAA’s annual arctic marine mammal aerial survey, an effort conducted with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, the agency that conducts offshore lease sales.

An estimated 2,000 to 4,000 walrus were photographed at the site Sept. 12. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the agency that manages walrus, immediately took steps to prevent a stampede among the animals packed shoulder to shoulder on the rocky coastline. The agency works with villages to keep people and airplanes a safe distance from herds.

Young animals are especially vulnerable to stampedes triggered by a polar bear, a human hunter or a low-flying airplane. The carcasses of more than 130 mostly young walruses were counted after a stampede in September 2009 at Alaska’s Icy Cape.

Rappahannock River Oysters Proves A Thriving Business Can Be Founded On Family Values

Rappahannock River Oysters owners Travis and Ryan Croxton used to know absolutely nothing about oyster farming, but they did know a lot about family history.

A Chesapeake oyster company based out of Topping, Va., Rappahannock River Oysters began in 1899 when Travis and Ryan’s great-grandfather bought just five acres of leased river bed bottom in the nearby Rappahannock River. He passed that business over to his son — Travis and Ryan’s grandfather — who would grow that initial investment into 100-plus acres of leased oyster ground, earning himself the nickname of “white-collar oysterman” for his habit of shucking oysters in his suit.

After his passing, however, the business was nearly abandoned. But in 2012, with the leases on their family’s oyster ground about to run out, brothers Travis and Ryan decided to revive the century-old family tradition of oyster farming.

Magma Blob Beneath Afar Rift In Ethiopia Puzzles Scientists

The Afar Rift in Ethiopia is marked by enormous gashes that signal the breakup of the African continent and the beginnings of a new ocean basin, scientists think.

The fractures appear eerily similar to seafloor spreading centers, the volcanic ridges that mark the boundaries between two pieces of oceanic crust. Along the ridges, lava bubbles up and new crust is created, slowly widening the ocean basin.

But a look deep beneath the Afar Rift reveals the birth announcements may be premature. “It’s not as close to fully formed seafloor spreading as we thought,” said Kathy Whaler, a geophysicist at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.

Whaler and her colleagues have spotted 120 cubic miles (500 cubic kilometers) of magma sitting in the mantle under the Afar Rift. Hot liquids like magma like to rise, so the discovery is a conundrum.

Transparent Snail, Zospeum tholussum, Discovered In Croatia (PHOTOS)

A new snail species with a beautifully translucent shell was recently discovered more than 3,000 feet (914 meters) underground in a Croatian cave.

A team of cavers and biologists with the Croatian Biospeleological Society discovered Zospeum tholussum in the Lukina Jama-Trojama cave systems of western Croatia — one of the 20 deepest cave systems in the world — on an expedition to determine the cave’s depth. The team collected all animal specimens found along the way, since deep cave crevices are often promising places to find new species, and happened upon one live sample of the new snail, along with eight empty shells.

The team presented the elegant snail to taxonomist Alexander Weigand at Goethe-University in Frankfurt, Germany, for help in identification. Weigand determined that this particular species had never before been found, but that it is related to other known species.

This Underwater Airplane Flies Through The Ocean Unlike Any Submarine Before It

It all started with a little crab.

While conducting tests with a conventional submersible that crawled on the bottom of the sea, ocean engineer Graham Hawkes came nose to nose with a little crustacean that was poised to fight the underwater machine.

“I remember stopping and laughing,” Hawkes told The Huffington Post. “But I thought, ‘That crab has got it all wrong. These fish are moving in three dimensions. This guy is scurrying along the bottom. So am I. We’ve both got it wrong.'”

Inspired by the movement of fish, Hawkes designed and built the DeepFlight Super Falcon, a submarine that flies through the water like an airplane, instead of taking on water to sink itself. Similar to how hot-air balloons release weights to fly up, traditional submarines have compartments that fill with water to sink down.

Hawkes started a company out of his garage to create the DeepFlight Super Falcon in 1995. Today, Hawkes’ dream has become a reality. “What we’re doing is really, really obvious,” Hawkes said. “There’s nothing that clever about it. We actually build a thing that has wings, we build up speed, and it just flies underwater.”

Finding Zen: Easy Ways to Cultivate More Inner Peace

HeartMath, widely recognized for its science-based solutions for stress, as well as a personal wellness technology innovator, explores the scientific meaning behind internal “Zen” and how people can easily reduce stress while increasing internal happiness.

Often, we define peacefulness by the absence of stress — a neutral, inactive, state. However, is peace really just a passive state? For most people, adopting the life of a “Zen master” and dedicating endless hours to meditation simply isn’t an option. Interestingly enough, science is helping to define an active peace state that is achievable with just minutes of daily practice.

Active peace can be described as an increased inner clarity, a feeling of inner calm, and a deeper sense of inner balance. This state of active peace is referred to psychophysiological coherence. Science has shown a correlation between coherence and our ability to think, act, and decision-make. Cultivating coherence, or a deeper internal peace, can actually make us more efficient and more capable of experiencing a meaningful and connected life.

The body responds favorably to the coherence state as well — emotional and mental states are revitalized, and the body’s immune and hormonal balance improves.

Joseph Naso, Convicted Serial Killer, Linked To Possible 6th Victim

Authorities say they’ve linked a sixth killing to a former photographer facing a possible death sentence for the murders of four Northern California women.

Prosecutors say new evidence ties 79-year-old Joseph Naso to the killing of Sharileea Patton, whose body was found in Marin County in 1981.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports the 56-year-old Patton was in the San Francisco Bay Area looking for work when her strangled body was found stuffed into two garbage bags.

Naso was convicted earlier this year of killing four women in the 1970s and 1990s. All four had alliterative names: Roxene Roggasch, Carmen Colon, Pamela Parsons and Tracy Tafoya.

Naso also is the suspect in a fifth killing in Nevada County in 1992.

Bosco Sodi’s Painting Philosophy Is More About Life Than Art

Bosco Sodi is an artist who likes to lose control. Born in Mexico City in 1970, he’s famous for his raw, cracked, and chemically eroded paintings, the results of careful experimentations with pigments, sawdust and a host of other materials. Yet while his process of exploring the intriguing reactions between canvas and mixed media is partially planned, the accidents and unpredictable forms that arise during his bouts as a mad scientist are what truly fuel his work.

Sodi’s preoccupation with accidents stems from his reverence toward the Wabi-sabi philosophy, the Japanese worldview that honors the beauty found in impermanence and imperfections. It’s a theme that’s readily observed in his upcoming exhibit at London’s Pace Gallery. Like his past body of work, the pieces on view in “Graphein” resemble the surface of another planet, filled with mysterious crevices and bold hues, reminiscent of the color-worship of Yves Klein. There’s continuity between the crumbled, amorphous creations, but there’s a also a lingering sense of sublime chance as bulges and fissures appear before your eyes.
