Sportsgiving came early this year.
According to an Imgur/Reddit post by user gotsnowart, a high school girls’ basketball team in St. Joseph, Missouri received the surprise of a lifetime in the form of a very special delivery in the mail. The Benton Cardinals were already riding a high, having secured the Missouri state championship title for 2016, but a surprise package by NBA legend LeBron James lifted their spirits to new, soaring levels.

A 1969 painting by Francis Bacon set a world record for most expensive artwork ever sold at auction.
“Three Studies of Lucian Freud” was purchased for $142,405,000 at Christie’s postwar and contemporary art sale on Tuesday night. The triptych depicts Bacon’s artist friend.
The work sold after “6 minutes of fierce bidding in the room and on the phone,” Christie’s said in a statement. The price includes the buyer’s premium. Christie’s did not say who bought the painting.
The price surpassed the nearly $120 million paid for Edvard Munch’s “The Scream,” which set a world record when it was sold at Sotheby’s in a 2012 sale.
The previous record for Bacon’s artwork sold at auction was his 1976 “Triptych.” That sold for $86 million in 2008.
Among other highlights scheduled to be auctioned at Christie’s is a bright orange-yellow and white oil painting by Mark Rothko. Reminiscent of a radiating sunset, the 1957 large-scale “Untitled (No. 11)” could fetch up to $35 million. In May 2012, Christie’s sold Rothko’s “Orange, Red, Yellow” for $86.8 million, a record for any contemporary artwork at auction.

Photographer Ulric Collette captured the uncanny resemblance between grandmother and granddaughter using members of his own family.
Collette explained his motivation for the striking image in an email to The Huffington Post.
“My mother’s name is Ginette, she’s 62, and my daughter’s name is Ismaëlle and she was 12 at the time the picture was taken. I made the photograph with the two of them because last summer I talked with a genetician who had the theory that grandchildren look much more like their paternal grandmother. I wanted to try it out with my family, and the result is pretty amazing!”

On a good day, art can be a portal to another dimension. On a great day, it’s a staircase to nowhere. Meet “Diminish and Ascend,” or as we like to call it, the infinite staircase.
Designed by New Zealand artist David McCracken, this magnificent illusion stems from the seashore in Bondi, Australia and rises up into the heavens above. Depending on the atmosphere and weather conditions, the stairway appears to reach beyond the clouds into the celestial realms overhead. It’s basically an M.C. Escher drawing in real life.

Hirst made history in 2008, when he by-passed the art galleries to become the first living artist to sell an entire show directly through auction at Sotheby’s. The sale raised $198 million and his estimated net worth today of $350 million dwarfs that of American abstract expressionist painter and sculptor Jasper Johns and Welsh portrait painter Andrew Vicari, who tie for second place with net worth estimated at $210 million, each.American artists Jeff Koons and David Choe come in at fourth place on the Wealth X ranking with an estimated net worth of $100 million, each.
Choe was commissioned by Mark Zuckerberg to paint murals on the walls of Facebook’s office in 2007 and opted to be paid in Facebook stock rather than cash. This brought the graffiti artist a significant windfall when the company went public in 2012.

The family of a former Jewish art collector is demanding the restitution of a Gustav Klimt masterpiece that it claims was acquired by Austria after World War II under extortion.
The family’s lawyer Marc Weber told the Austria Press Agency (APA) Wednesday that the heirs of Erich Lederer, the previous owner, had filed a restitution request with the Austrian culture ministry. The ministry confirmed to AFP that it had received the claim.
A famed example of Jugendstil art, the 34-metre-long (112-foot) and two-metre-high Beethoven Frieze — or fresco — is one of Vienna’s tourism highlights.

Earlier this month an online raffle gave art admirers the opportunity to own their very own Picasso drawing for just $135. It might seem like a bargain, but with 50,000 raffle tickets available, the $1 million artwork could stand to raise $6.75 million in the end (with all proceeds going toward the preservation of the ancient city of Tyre).
That sum, however, doesn’t hold a candle to an upcoming sale of 29 Picasso artworks at Christie’s in New York City, heading to auction courtesy of the famed collector Jan Krugier. Including wood sculptures, minotaur sketches and portraits of Paloma, the bevy of Picasso masterpieces are set to hit the bidding block at the same time, with one lot alone boasting a $35 million high estimate.
