Sunscreen Could Be Killing The World’s Coral Reefs, Study Says

Just two weeks ago, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) raised the alarm about the terrible plight facing the Earth’s coral reefs. For the third time in history, the world is in the midst of a global coral bleaching event, the agency said.

“We are losing huge areas of coral across the U.S., as well as internationally,” said Mark Eakin, NOAA’s Coral Reef Watch coordinator, citing climate change and events like the current El Niño as primary reasons for the mass die-off.

A new study published this week is bringing even more bad news about the world’s dying corals. According to researchers, there may be another, oft-overlooked threat to reefs worldwide: sunscreen.

Scientists who conducted their research in Hawaii and the U.S. Virgin Islands found that the chemical oxybenzone — used in more than 3,500 sunscreen products worldwide, including those by popular brands such as Coppertone, L’Oreal, and Banana Boat — was extremely harmful to fragile coral reefs.

“The chemical not only kills the coral, it causes DNA damage in adults and deforms the DNA in coral in the larval stage, making it unlikely they can develop properly,” a news release reported.

The researchers said even a tiny amount of oxybenzone-containing sunscreen can damage corals. As The Washington Post noted, “the equivalent of a drop of water in a half-dozen Olympic-sized swimming pools” was sufficient to cause harm.

Why “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” Is the Biggest Disney Hit Since “Let It Go”

.

This week, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”—a song from the soundtrack to Disney’s latest animated film, Encanto—climbed toward the top of the music charts, nestling itself among the likes of Lil Nas X and Adele on the Billboard Hot 100 and Spotify’s most-played tracks. The song sets one of the film’s dramatic climaxes, consisting of a revolving door of magical characters interjecting a whirlwind of melodies. It all culminates in the film’s protagonist, Mirabel, piecing together one of the movie’s central mysteries: What’s the deal with Bruno?

There are many aspects of this track contributing to its rising popularity, weeks after Encanto’s release: Not only is the song narratively compelling, but it’s also a total bop. The music is a remarkable mixture of Broadway and Latin American influences, with a particularly distinctive rhythm. While the characters each sing the catchy and tight melodies we’ve come to expect from Lin-Manuel Miranda, they almost always avoid singing on the beat. The song’s repeating bass line also constantly teases our expectations; of the 30 notes that make up this lick, only two align with the beat! This pervasive off-the-beat-ness is precisely why we can’t help grooving to this song; when music evades the beat, it evokes a feeling of motion in listeners, tugging on our own centers of gravity as it narrowly avoids coinciding with where we expect it to land.

Badger Guns Found Liable for Negligence in Milwaukee Police Shooting

One of the nation’s biggest sellers of crime-linked guns was found liable for negligence Tuesday in the case of two Milwaukee officers wounded by one of the shop’s firearms.

Jurors in Milwaukee County have ordered Badger Guns to pay almost $6 million to Officer Bryan Norberg and now-retired Officer Graham Kunisch, who were both shot in the face while in the line of duty in 2009.

The two officers sued for negligence, alleging that the West Milwaukee gun shop should have known that the gun eventually used in the shooting was initially sold as part of a “straw” purchase. In those cases, someone buys the gun on behalf of someone else who is not legally permitted to purchase a gun.

10 Great Novels of Middle Age

.

My first thought when I saw the first trailer for the sequel to Trainspotting was: wait, these people are still alive? Not the actors, of course—they’re not so old. I meant the heroin addicts. Ewan McGregor may have lasted the 20-plus years since the original film hit theaters, but Renton surely hasn’t. Director Danny Boyle famously joked that he could only make this sequel—based on Irvine Welsh’s Porno, which is set ten years after the events of Trainspotting—once the actors had aged a little bit. “Actors stay suspended in that timeless moment where they’re moisturizing and looking after themselves and making sure they keep fit and healthy, because it’s their work, it’s their future employment. But when time ravages them, we will be waiting for them,” he said. That time has come. To celebrate the fact that all these characters are still alive—and even better, in this era of extremes, that we actually care about them, even now that they’re no longer exactly young, a list of a few great novels of middle age. After all, even the stories of aging heroin addicts deserve to be told.

What It Would Take To Drink The Water On Mars

.

Just to put it in perspective, it’s saltier than the saltiest water on Earth: Antarctica’s Don Juan Pond. “Nothing can live in the brine of Don Juan Pond,” NASA planetologist Chris McKay, who wasn’t involved in the Mars water discovery, told me in an email.

So how are we going to quench our thirst if we do start building condos on Mars? Importing water from Earth is expensive and unsustainable long-term. And trying to imitate the survival steps taken by the stranded astronaut from The Martian — burning oxygen and hydrogen to produce water — would be extremely dangerous. Some have suggested setting up a huge humidifier to extract water from Mars’ thin atmosphere. Others think that loading up soil, which contains trace ice crystals, into a heater is the way to go. You could trap the water vapor, then condense it back to a liquid.

But the most effective way to keep us hydrated on Mars will be to tap its freshwater. There’s tons of it at the polar caps, according to scientists. The northern ice cap alone is 621 miles across. There’s also dust-covered glaciers that wrap around the planet. It’s a huge amount of ice — the equivalent of all of Mars being covered in one meter of ice, according to a recent study. That’s a nice, stable (though probably non-renewable) source of H20.

This Is What It Means When Your Dog Puts Their Paw On You

.

It’s common knowledge that dogs wag their tails when they’re happy and tuck them in when they’re anxious. Some body language, however, is a little less clear. Like, have you ever wondered what it really means when they put their paw on you? Turns out, it could be a sign of affection that translates into the three words that we long to hear: “I love you.”

Rebecca Forrest, an assistance dog trainer for The Dog Clinic, wrote about how your dog’s paw could be a sign of thanks for the petting they’ve already received—and want to show that the loving feeling is mutual. “Studies have shown ‘feel good’ hormones such as oxytocin are released by both human and dog during a petting session,” wrote Forrest. “By putting his paw on you whilst you are stroking him, he is further extending contact and reciprocating affection back.”

Forrest expresses that this interpretation makes sense in the right context, like if you’re cuddled up on the couch with each other. If you’re already petting your dog and he touches you to return the favor, then it’s a fairly sure sign.

Rosetta’s ‘Rubber Duck’ Comet Was Once Two Separate Comets

.

When the Rosetta space probe sent back its first close-up pictures of a comet last year, scientists got a bit of a surprise: Instead of the ball of rock and ice they had expected, the comet turned out to have two distinct lobes connected by a “neck.”

Some said it looked like a giant rubber duck. Researchers have now concluded that the comet 67P Churyumov-Gerasimenko was probably formed when two separate objects collided during the early stages of the solar system, according to a paper published Monday in the journal Nature.

Using data collected by the OSIRIS cameras onboard Rosetta, scientists were able to determine that the flat planes and arcs on 67P’s surface are in fact terraces that wrap around the two lobes like layers around an onion. “For the first time, this study gives observational evidence on how the primordial bodies formed,” said Matteo Massironi, one of the study’s authors.

Thanks to the high resolution of the images, scientists were able to see that the layers on the larger lobe — some up to 650 meters (2,130 feet) thick — are independent of the layers on the smaller lobe. In essence, this means the comet is made of two separate cores.
