If you’re a procrastinator, you know the feeling of being sidetracked by a bunch of kitten videos when there’s a huge project you should really be working on. It doesn’t feel great, not getting anything done. So why do we let ourselves procrastinate in the first place?
A recent video from School Of Life — a London-based organization dedicated to developing emotional intelligence through classes, therapy and more — suggests that overwhelming pressure to succeed could be part of the reason a procrastinator puts things off.
“I do nothing not because I’m lazy, but because I’m scared,” the timid character in the video says. “I’m scared that if I start, what I do will be horrible. I want things to be so amazing.”

You’ve heard that using screens before bedtime can mess with your sleep, but new research suggests the problem is even more serious.
Reading from an iPad before bed not only makes it harder to fall asleep, but also impacts how sleepy and alert you are the next day, according to new research from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Monday, said the findings could impact anyone who uses an eReader, laptop, smartphone, or certain TVs before bed.
The new research supports conclusions from older studies, which have also found that screen time before sleep can be detrimental.

If there’s one food that no one — not your doctor, your nutritionist, or even your mother — will tell you to eat less of, it’s leafy greens. Calorie for calorie, chard, collards, kale, and other leafy greens may just be the most nutritious food you can eat. They’re packed with vitamins — A, B, K, and others — but also rich in essential minerals like calcium, iron, potassium, and magnesium, as well as antioxidants, which protect cells against damage. Leafy greens contain phytochemicals, natural compounds that can help prevent hardening of the arteries and lower inflammation linked to heart disease. The greens’ synergistic combination of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals helps detox cells and expunge free radicals that damage DNA, both of which may inhibit cancer cells from forming and multiplying.

What we eat can cut the risk of developing chronic diseases that make us old before our time: high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity. Abundant scientific research has shown how important food is to healthy aging.
What is meant by “anti-aging”? It’s not a vague beauty term, its markers are radiant hair, skin, daily physical activity, a positive mindset and preventing chronic disease.
Fifty may be the new 40, but one biological fact does change over time: some nutrient demands do increase, so the importance of nutrient DENSE foods becomes more important for as we get older. Science-backed healthy eating plans, like the Mediterranean diet and the USDA’s MyPlate strategy, have this in common:
-
abundant colorful fruits and vegetables
-
lean protein (both animal and plant sources)
-
heart healthy, unsaturated fats
-
fiber-rich grains
-
low-fat dairy products (or equivalent).
-
limiting processed foods with added salts, sugars, fats, and calories

You know the biggies: Don’t smoke, stay out of the sun, and go easy on the processed food. But if you really want to maximize your chances of living forever (or, okay, if not forever than just for a really long time—and healthily), you need to pay attention to some lesser-known culprits, too.

Not all foods are created equal when it comes to the impact on body weight. Some are higher in calories than others. Others are tougher to eat in small portions. Still others are both rich in calories and impossible to consume in small amounts—which spells double trouble for the waistline.
So when you load up on these foods day after day, it’s not surprising that your weight goes up. Portion control is the best solution but there are ways to enjoy these foods in more healthy ways.

He had money, charisma, movie star looks and no apparent reason to drug his sexual partners. But he did it anyway, according to multiple accusers, who remember little except losing consciousness and waking up partly dressed and molested.
That case — of Andrew Luster, a cosmetics heir convicted in 2003 in Ventura County, Calif., of raping three women after dosing them with a date-rape drug — is distinct from comedian Bill Cosby’s. Women have accused Mr. Cosby of drugging and raping them over a period of decades; he has denied the allegations and not been charged.
Yet the stories the men’s accusers tell raise an overarching question: Why would someone who has seemingly easy access to consensual sex resort to drugging?

This mystery tissue could be what’s making you feel stiff, creaky…and baffled.
You’re Achy, You’re Sore, and You Have No Idea Why
It feels like muscle pain, but unlike a tight hamstring that makes you yelp when you stand up, your ache isn’t triggered by a particular movement, and you can feel it in different places at various times. The culprit could be your fascia (pronounced “fash-ya”), says Mary Ann Wilmarth, DPT, chief of physical therapy at Harvard University Health Services. This sheet of tissue, made up of densely packed protein fibers, weaves throughout the entire body, and it binds and supports your muscles, bones and even your organs. While bodywork specialists have been passionate about fascia for decades, Wilmarth says it took new research on how fascia and muscles work together (some of it presented at the first international fascia research conference at Harvard in 2007) to get different health pros — from orthopedists to MDs and pain experts to personal trainers — to catch on.

I remember the day I found out that my aunt had cancer. Although she was the most positive person I had ever met, I still worried about how she would handle such an overwhelming diagnosis.
Looking back, now that her cancer is in remission, she continues to be the most positive person I know. But even more than that, she is what I call an elegant spirit.
Cancer, in my aunt’s world, was a small valley hidden amongst the many glorious peaks of her life. While she may have had some moments of despair as we all do when we find ourselves alone in our thoughts, unable to see the light at the end of the tunnel, she never showed this to the world outside.
