True flies are insects of the order Diptera, the name being derived from the Greek δι- di- “two”, and πτερόν pteron “wing”. Insects of this order use only a single pair of wings to fly, the hindwings having evolved into advanced mechanosensory organs known as halteres, which act as high-speed sensors of rotational movement and allow dipterans to perform advanced aerobatics. Diptera is a large order containing an estimated 1,000,000 species including horse-flies, crane flies, hoverflies and others, although only about 125,000 species have been described.

For 10 years I enthusiastically carried the Republican banner: as an activist, as the congressional nominee from New Hampshire’s 2nd District, as a two-term chairman of the New Hampshire Republican Party, and as a member of the Republican National Committee’s Executive Committee under the leadership of Reince Priebus. I spent those years extolling the virtues of the party of Lincoln, articulating those values that I believe make America the greatest nation on earth: freedom, equality, and unlimited opportunity.
Republicans, I daily declared, were best positioned to preserve and expand those foundational American principles.
My heart breaks as I sit here today in the final moments of a slow, three-year realization that the party of Lincoln is nearly dead, consumed by the ugly, destructive conduct of a dishonest, corrupt man who wears the stolen badge of Republicanism, transforming a once-great party into a racist nationalist movement that uses hate and fear to divide and destroy.

The common wombat, also known as the coarse-haired wombat or bare-nosed wombat, is a marsupial, one of three extant species of wombats and the only one in the genus Vombatus. The common wombat grows to an average of 98 cm long and a weight of 26 kg.

There are two figures in the Republican Party who best represent the state of the GOP in the Trump era. The first, of course, is Donald Trump. The second is Roy Moore. By the time Moore defeated Jeff Sessions’ replacement, Luther Strange, in the Republican primary for Alabama’s special election in 2017, he had already been a minor celebrity on the right-wing fringe for nearly 20 years. He had been removed from the Alabama Supreme Court twice for refusing to comply with federal rulings. He regularly made statements disparaging Islam and homosexuality. He had been a proponent of the theory that Barack Obama had not been born in the United States and had led an organization that celebrated pro-Confederate holidays. True to form, Moore would go on to make comments suggesting an ambivalence about American slavery during his campaign—America was last great, he had said in response to a question at a rally that September, “when families were united—even though we had slavery, they cared for one another.”

If you’ve been passing the time during the quarantine by stress baking, but you’re quickly running out of dairy, don’t worry. You can make this simple-yet-delicious “depression cake” that doesn’t require milk, butter, or even eggs.
Also known as “wacky cake,” the recipe calls for flour, sugar, and cocoa powder, plus a few other pantry staples. You can stir it up in one bowl and when it’s done, finish with powdered sugar, whipped cream, or nothing at all. The result is a sinfully delicious cake that’s a crowd-pleaser (or in this case, quarantine-pleaser!).
The cake, which gets its name from the cakes baked during the Great Depression when rations were limited, is currently making a big comeback as many home bakers are searching for recipes that are tasty but also extremely adaptable.

RISE UP After you’ve spent a month conversing almost exclusively with family members, it’s a treat to hear Alicia Keys’ voice over the phone. Even more refreshingly, the 15-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, actress, producer, entrepreneur, and activist doesn’t play down her excitement over the success of her memoir, “More Myself.” She says, “I made it to the best-seller list and I’m ecstatic!”
Keys describes her book, currently at No. 9 on the hardcover nonfiction list, as “the honest journey of how I found my way to becoming who I am as opposed to being what I’ve been told to be.” The book begins when she’s 7 and follows her path to stardom, potholes, and all — including reflections on her father’s absence and the shame she felt, at 19, when she was manipulated into posing provocatively at her first magazine cover shoot. After that, she writes, “I swear that I will never again let someone rob me of my power.”
Working on the book was cathartic for Keys — a process she describes as “getting down recollections, thinking, realizing, uncovering, starting, stopping, ebbing and flowing.” She didn’t know her co-writer, Michelle Burford, beforehand but now, she laughs, “I know her better than anyone on the planet. I never had a better therapist.” Of the difference between putting words on a page and setting them to music, Keys says, “With any creative endeavor, you’re on the line — with people’s judgment, with your own idiosyncrasies and neuroses. You’re going to have fear. You’re going to have to overcome the fear. You’re going to have doubts. You’re going to overcome the doubt. You’re going to have anxiety. You’re going to overcome the anxiety.”
