Women who get a flu vaccine while they’re pregnant lower their risk of having a child with autism.
.
Greg Poland, MD, a researcher at the Mayo Clinic has been studying the flu virus for a quarter century. He says you can think of the flu vaccine as an “anti-autism vaccine.”
It’s a startling statement, but it is backed up by several recent studies. Dr. Poland says pregnant women who get influenza have double or triple the risk of having a child with autism. So preventing flu during pregnancy is vital.

Ten years ago, I was almost 60 pounds more than I am now.
I had cut my hair short, added a few highlights and really had this frumpy vibe going on. I had two kids at the time, ages 6 and 2. I was trying to be taken seriously as a good mommy and had let myself go. I was eating a ridiculous amount of sugar. I cared way too much about what other women thought of me. I formed new friendships with the moms from school and they frequently revolved around food. I hated the way I looked, but I fit in. After seeing the pictures from a trip to Disney with my family, I wondered how I let it happen. I knew I was wearing a size 14 and at five feet tall, it looked like I was wearing an even bigger size. I had a double chin and knew if I didn’t stop this weight train, I’d be even bigger.

The phrase “pinup girl” often conjures up images of hourglass figures and vintage fashion. But how often are the pin-ups we see actually plus-size women?
Not often enough. That’s why we’re so excited that Hilda, originally drawn in the 1950s by illustrator Duane Bryers, resurfaced on the Internet this week.
According to the blog Messy Nessy Chic, Hilda is a vintage icon who was “one of history’s longest running calendar queens” alongside Marilyn Monroe and others.
“She’s a creation out of my head. I had various models over the years, but some of my best Hilda paintings I’ve ever done were done without a model,” Bryers said in an interview with illustrator Les Toil.

Mark E. Robson, M.D.
I must confess that I am very conflicted about adding to the river of words that have been written about Angelina Jolie’s decision to undergo a risk-reducing (preventive) mastectomy. She made a difficult choice, and has discussed that choice with power and grace, in the hope of helping other women. Both the choice and the disclosure took a lot of courage. Full stop. But the power of her celebrity, and the extensive media coverage of her decision, may wind up making things more difficult for some women with BRCA1 or 2 mutations.
I have been involved in research in this area for 17 years, since shortly after BRCA1 and BRCA2 were discovered, and I honestly have no idea what I would do if I were a woman faced with this decision. Imagine the situation. You go to talk to a health care provider because you have a family history of breast cancer or ovarian cancer. Hopefully, you have genetic counseling (which not everyone gets, although they should), and learn about genetics for an hour or so. If it looks like there’s a meaningful chance that genetic testing could be informative, you then give a blood sample or spit in a tube.

Angelina Jolie is an American actress, film director, and screenwriter. She has received an Academy Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and three Golden Globe Awards, and was named Hollywood’s highest-paid actress by Forbes in 2009 and 2011.

Sandy Stein of West Hills, CA, had been a flight attendant for 34 years when she decided she needed to try something else. Her husband had lost three jobs and Sandy was only flying part time, and with a family to feed, that part time salary was just not cutting it. So Sandy looked above and asked her late father for guidance.

“So,” I told one of my male friends, “I’m writing about women’s erogenous zones. Any thoughts?” He reacted with a shudder and then pretty much bolted in the other direction with a quick goodbye. Another guy friend hid his face in his t-shirt when I asked him the same question. I had to wonder, what’s the big deal, here? Why are men loathe to discuss what gets women hot?
