The most powerful Atlantic tropical storm in more than a decade was gearing up Monday to deliver a potentially devastating blow to Haiti — a Caribbean country that’s still struggling to rebound from a series of earlier natural disasters.
Packing 130 mph winds, Hurricane Matthew was already lashing the Caribbean country with torrential rains as it crawled northward on Monday.
Jamaica and Cuba are also in path of the storm, and the Dominican Republic was expected to absorb a glancing blow. But Haiti will likely feel the full impact of Matthew’s fury later Monday when the center reaches the southwestern coast of the country.

Two Vincent Van Gogh paintings have been recovered by police in Italy 14 years after being stolen, officials said Friday.
Police in Naples said the works — described as being of “priceless value” — were discovered during a crackdown targeting the Naples-based Camorra crime clan, The Associated Press reported.
They were taken from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam in 2002 and “appear to be in relatively good condition,” according to a news release announcing the discovery.

A speeding commuter train plowed into a platform inside NJ Transit’s Hoboken Terminal during the Thursday morning rush hour, killing a woman and injuring 108 other people, officials said.
The train was traveling “at much too high rate of speed,” crashing through a series of barriers and taking down an interior wall of the station just before 9 a.m. ET, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said at a news conference after assessing the damage.
Witnesses reported seeing bruised and bloodied passengers, including a woman pinned underneath concrete. Riders had to break through train windows and climb to safety, helping one another amid rubble and twisted steel.

A 14-year-old boy shot a teacher and two young pupils, one of whom was critically wounded, at a South Carolina elementary school Wednesday, and his father was later found dead by the suspect’s grandmother at a nearby home, authorities said.
One of the injured boys, identified as Jacob Hall, was still listed in critical condition Thursday morning at Greenville Health System Children’s Hospital in Anderson County. No further details, including Jacob’s age, were provided. The teacher, a woman later identified as Meghan Hollingsworth, and the other boy were treated and released from a hospital.
The suspect, who officials said was home-schooled, was taken into custody without incident on the grounds of Townville Elementary School at 1:45 p.m. by a 30-year veteran of the Townville Volunteer Fire Department, authorities said.

Believing that Islamic State captives held on a compound in northern Iraq faced “imminent mass execution,” dozens of U.S. special operations troops and Iraqi forces raided the site Thursday, freeing approximately 70 Iraqi prisoners in an operation that saw the first American killed in combat in the country since the U.S. war against IS began in 2014, officials said.
The raiders killed and captured a number of militants and recovered what the Pentagon called a trove of valuable intelligence about the terrorist organization.
The U.S. service member who died was not publicly identified pending notification of relatives. Officials said this was the first American combat death in Iraq since the U.S. began its counter-IS military campaign in August 2014.

Federal regulators announced Monday that recreational drone operators will be required to register their aircraft.
“There can be no accountability if the person breaking the rules can’t be identified,” Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said at a news conference.
A task force of more than two dozen people will be responsible for creating guidelines for the national registry by Nov. 20, with the goal of instilling the program before the end of the holiday season, when around 1 million drones are expected to be sold.

At first glance, Microsoft’s choice to introduce both regular and XL-sized Windows 10 phones on Tuesday might look like a desperate attempt to keep up with Apple and Google. But a closer inspection of what these new phones actually can do, however, will tell you that Microsoft is in position to take the lead in next-generation handsets.
The reason: Windows 10 Continuum.
Continuum turns your Windows 10 smartphone into a full-on computer you carry around in your pocket. Plug your handset into the $99 Display Box — a hockey puck-sized hub with USB ports and an HDMI screen output — and all the apps and documents on your phone will scale up to PC-size, ready to be manipulated using a full-sized keyboard and mouse.
The caveats: Continuum will only be coming to Microsoft’s new Lumia phones (set to be released this November), not any current Windows phones. And this trick will only work with Windows 10 “universal apps” (more on those in a bit).

The first debate of the 2016 Democratic presidential primary will be defined by two moments: When the topic turned to Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-Vt.) chief vulnerability, Hillary Clinton jumped at the opportunity to draw a sharp contrast. When the roles were reversed, Sanders threw her a lifeline.
Those two exchanges — the first on gun control and the second on Clinton’s use of a private email account as secretary of state — exemplified not just the different political DNA of each candidate, it underscored the brewing intensity of a Democratic primary that few thought would be competitive.
Clinton’s overall performance will be remembered as the more forceful one, in part because the early questions played to her strengths. A back-and-forth on why Sanders didn’t consider himself a capitalist led to her defending robust regulations, with him touting Denmark.

Palestinian men armed with knives and a gun killed at least three people and wounded several others in a string of attacks in Jerusalem and near Tel Aviv on Tuesday, police said, on a “Day of Rage” declared by Palestinian groups.
With the worst unrest in years in Israel and the Palestinian territories showing no signs of abating, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called a security cabinet meeting for 3 p.m. to discuss what police said would be new operational plans.
Officials said Israel’s public security minister was considering whether to seal off Palestinian neighborhoods in East Jerusalem, home of many of the assailants of the past two weeks, from the rest of the city.

King Tut’s tomb may be hiding a huge secret.
Egyptian officials said on Monday there’s evidence of two hidden chambers behind the tomb’s famous painted walls — and one expert believes those secret rooms could be the long-lost final resting place of Queen Nefertiti.
Monday’s inspection of the walls of the 3,300-year-old tomb revealed scratches and other markings.
“This indicates that the western and northern walls of Tutankhamun’s tomb could hide two burial chambers,” Mamdouh Eldamaty, Egypt’s antiquities minister, told Ahram Online.
